FELTON — How would you feel if you were outraced by a 73-year-old lady while jogging at your best? This is an oddity Big Sur marathoners may want to prepare themselves for, as Khartoon Brown enters the coastal race for the 25th year in a row today.
“To me, age doesn’t matter,” Brown said. “I just don’t buy that.”
Brown has not missed a single iteration of the 26-mile-race since its creation in 1986, making her the only woman to have run every Big Sur marathon, she said. This year, a group of about 20 people will support and run with her to celebrate the record. Friends and family will be wearing purple T-shirts made for the occasion, proudly wearing Brown’s typical greeting on their chest: “Good morning sunshine.”
A 5-foot tall running phenomenon, Brown doesn’t know the loneliness sometimes related to aging. She is constantly surrounded by younger runner friends. On Saturdays, Brown meets her “children,” ranging from the mid-20s to the mid-50s, for a run at the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in Aptos.
“We probably wouldn’t have been friends if it wasn’t for the running,” said Felton resident Filomena Milburn, stressing how sportsmanship brought women with such different personalities and lives together.
After running with Brown for 15 years, 56-year-old Milburn still admires her strength.
“Mentally, she can do anything,” Milburn said. “There are things that she does that I know I could never do.”
Beyond performance or energy, the little running family shines with unity.
“I usually call Khartoon Mom,’ except when she passes me,” said Robin Stevens.
A former beauty salon owner, Brown began running at age 45 for health reasons.
“I needed to exercise,” Brown said. “A lot of women take medications. I took running.”
The Mount Hermon resident really committed to running after taking part into her first marathon in Hawaii during the early 1980s. After her first New York Marathon, she was attracted to the Big Sur course in 1986 by its beauty, she said. Brown completed the California race each year within the six-hour time limit.
Brown doesn’t follow any particular diet or training. She said she just take short runs throughout the year and trains on longer distances during the two months before the big race.
Last November, Brown completed the New York Marathon one more time.
“I know what I need to do to get there,” Brown said.
73 security men killed by Naxals in India

NEW DELHI: In the worst Maoist attack, at least 73 CRPF and district force personnel were today killed when a large group of Naxals ambushed them in the thick Mukrana forests of India’s Chhattisgarh”s Dantewada district.
The dead included 73 CRPF men including a deputy and an assistant commandant, and a head constable of the district police force.
73 bodies of the personnel, who were part of a 80-member CRPF and a district police team, have been recovered from the site of the attack suspected to have been carried out by about 1000 Naxals, police spokesman and Inspector General R K Vij said.
Eight of the injured CRPF men have been evacuated for treatment from the forest area, he said.
Official sources said the attack took place when the CRPF unit belonging to the 68 Battalion entered the forest for an operation between six and seven am and were ambushed by the Maoists.
Helicopters have been pressed into service to evacuate the injured and bring back the bodies, Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Viswa Ranjan said.
Dense jungles are hampering relief operations.

LOS ANGELES: Michael Jackson Funeral Live and Michael Jackson eventually laid to rest, More than two months after his death from a drug overdose, Michael Jackson will be laid to rest here Thursday in a private funeral for family and friends at a star-studded Los Angeles cemetery.
Jackson, who died aged 50 on June 25, will be entombed in an ornate mausoleum at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where Hollywood icons such as Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, Spencer Tracy and Walt Disney are buried.
No details of the 45-minute service have been released, although reports Thursday said soul diva Aretha Franklin could sing at the service as mourners said a poignant final farewell to the “King of Pop.”
Jackson’s children — Prince Michael, 12, 11-year-old Paris and Prince Michael II, 7 — would leave notes in their father’s coffin, reports said.
Messages reading “Daddy we love you, we miss you,” would be placed in Jackson’s gold-plated casket alongside his trademark single white glove.
Close Jackson friends Diana Ross and Brooke Shields are reported to be among the mourners who will be in attendance.
Thursday’s service contrasts with the lavish public memorial held at Los Angeles’s Staples Center in July, which was attended by 20,000 fans and beamed live around the world to an estimated audience of 1 billion.
Police in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale urged Jackson devotees to stay away from Thursday’s funeral, saying the neighborhood surrounding the cemetery’s imposing entrance would be cordoned off.
“A special request would be to encourage fans to stay at home,” a statement said. “The closure of the streets for the day will not afford anyone the opportunity to get anywhere near the gates.”
Police helicopters, sniffer dogs and plain-clothes officers would patrol the 300-acre (120-hectare) cemetery, on the lookout for any fans trying to sneak into the service, which is due to take place at 7:00 pm (0200 GMT Friday).
Jackson is to be interred at Forest Lawn’s Great Mausoleum, an elaborate neo-classical building inspired by Genoa’s Campo Santo.
Forest Lawn, which opened in 1906, is also home to replicas of some of Michelangelo’s greatest works, including “David,” “La Pieta” and “Moses.”
The cemetery also features a stunning recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” in stained glass.
Jackson’s casket will be placed in a private area of the crypt that also houses Hollywood legends Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and Carole Lombard. Other icons buried at the cemetery include Lon Chaney, Nat King Cole and Errol Flynn.
Although open to the public, Forest Lawn is renowned for its privacy, and unlike other cemeteries in the Los Angeles area does not provide maps of celebrity graves.
On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge supported a request from Jackson’s mother, Katherine, that the cost of the service be paid for by her son’s estate.
A lawyer for the two entertainment industry figures who control Jackson’s fortune said the costs of the service would be steep.
“The expenses will be extraordinary, but Michael Jackson was extraordinary,” Jeryll Cohen said, without specifying the anticipated bill.
Jackson’s delayed funeral comes after months of speculation about the exact cause of his death and reports of divisions within the singer’s family about where he should be buried.
Jackson’s elder brother Jermaine had said he wanted the star to be interred at his Neverland Ranch estate north of Los Angeles. Jackson fled the property in 2005 following his acquittal on child molestation charges.
Los Angeles coroners said last week that Jackson’s death was being treated as a homicide and revealed that the star had six drugs in his body when he died, including propofol, a powerful anesthetic.
