BAGHDAD: Iraqi government says a mass grave discovered in northeast Iraq contains 185 bodies, mostly of women and children believed killed during a crackdown against Kurds by former dictator Saddam Hussein.
Majid Abdullah Karim of the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights said Saturday that the number could be lower because only bones were found.
Karim says the grave was discovered south of Kirkuk two years ago, though forensic pathologists only began examining it this week.
The grave was found at a former military camp used by Saddam’s forces. Authorities believe the remains date to between 1988 and 1991.
An estimated 180,000 Kurds were killed by Saddam’s forces during the late 1980s in a brutal crackdown on Kurdish insurgents.

These views were expressed by Punjab Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed while talking to PPP members of Punjab assembly, here at his office today. Provincial Minister said that the Government is facing a number of problems at the external and internal fronts most of them are the wrong policies of former dictator Pervez Musharraf. But the present Government has rendered all out efforts with political acumen and statesmanship, Raja Riaz Ahmed added. The minister further said that load shedding is effecting not only economy but also social life is badly disturbed due to this problem that is why we are taking steps on war footing basis to solve this very problem.
The Minister said that the political process in the country is flourishing and its credit goes to harmony and spirit of coexistence among the leadership and parliamentarians of different political parties.
Raja Riaz Ahmed said that all the political and political matters in Punjab are being run through complete understanding and conciliation. Both the coalition parties have maintained continuous communication and exchange of point of views while running the matters of the province. So question does not rise about any misunderstanding or differences among them, the minister added. He said that PPP leadership has clear-cut approach that democracy is its real strength and only democracy should be held ultimate goal of Pakistan.
