GUWAHATI: Virat Kohli scored 105 to carry India to a solid total of 276 all-out in the first innings of the first one-day international against New Zealand.
The right-handed number-three scored 100 off 100 balls before falling to Andy McKay, New Zealand’s most effective bowler, when caught by Jamie How in the 43rd over.
Kohli’s firepower looked set to take India to a formidable score but McKay pinned them back with four wickets for 62 runs.
Gambhir chipped in 38 as he took up the role of Indian captain, with M.S. Dhoni rested along with other top stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh for the start of the five-match series.
New Zealand’s regular captain Daniel Vettori was also missing due to back stiffness following the three-game Test series between the teams, which India won 1-0 with a victory in Nagpur.

BRISBANE: England’s bowlers struck back with four wickets, including that of Australia captain Ricky Ponting, after lunch on the second day of the first Ashes test on Friday to reduce the hosts to 168-5 at tea.
Mike Hussey was at the crease having made an aggressive 46 not out with wicketkeeper Brad Haddin (9) with him still 92 runs behind England’s first innings total of 260.
After labouring hard for one wicket in the morning, James Anderson came out firing after the break and got immediate reward when Ponting was caught behind by wicketkeeper Matt Prior for 10 in the first over.
His fellow quick Steve Finn kept up the pressure with his first Ashes wicket when he caught and bowled opener Simon Katich, who had survived a couple of scares to make 50, his 25th test half century.

SOUTHAMPTON: Eoin Morgan’s latest match-winning Rose Bowl century saw England to a crushing 121 run-victory against Pakistan as they took the five-match one-day series 3-2 on Wednesday to end a scandal-marred season.
Success meant England had won consecutive Test (3-1), Twenty20 (2-0) and limited overs series against a Pakistan side whose tour was overshadowed by ‘spot-fixing’ allegations.
Man-of-the-match Morgan made 107 not out in a total of 256 for six after England had slumped to 47 for three following captain Andrew Strauss’s decision to bat first.
Former Ireland left-hander Morgan had previously made an unbeaten 103 as England beat Australia by four wickets in the first one-dayer at the Rose Bowl in June.
Pakistan were eventually dismissed for 135 with 13 overs still left, seamer Stuart Broad taking three for 25 and off-spinner Graeme Swann
England beat Pakistan by four wickets in second ODI
England 295 for 6 (Strauss 126, Trott 53)
Pakistan 294 for 8 (Kamran 74)
England beat Pakistan by four wickets with three balls remaining in the second of five one-day internationals on Sunday to take a 2-0 series lead.
Andrew Strauss anchored England’s challenge with a determined 126 from 134 balls, and added 146 for the second wicket with Jonathan Trott, who was run out for 53, as Pakistan’s stiff target of 295 was overhauled with four wickets and three balls to spare in a thrilling encounter at Headingley. A clutch of late wickets threatened to derail England’s serene progress, not least when Strauss and Eoin Morgan fell in consecutive overs with 35 still needed, but with six runs needed from the final over, bowled by Umar Gul, Tim Bresnan top-edged a pull for four to put the result beyond doubt.
Pakistan produced one of their best batting displays of the tour to reach 294 for 8 at Headingley as Kamran Akmal led from the top with a powerful 72-ball 74. That was followed with a maiden one-day fifty by the impressive Asad Shafiq while Mohammad Yousuf contributed a calm 46.
