Interference on Balochistan unbearable, US told

While giving weekly briefing in Islamabad, FO spokesman Abdul Basit said, “Balochistan is our internal matter; all the countries should respect the sovereignty of one another.”

He said that Gilani visit to Doha was exclusively focused on bilateral relations with Qatar, though, regional situation and peace in Afghanistan also came under discussion in the meetings between the Prime Minister and Qatari officials.

 

About the initial talks between Taliban and the US, the spokesman said the American diplomatic sources had briefed Pakistani officials over their contacts and talks with them. However, he declined to comment on meeting between Taliban and the US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan Ambassador Marc Grossman in Qatar.

 

“Better this question be asked US State Department instead of me, they can confirm or reject such question,” he added.

 

Responding to a question about different approaches of China and Pakistan over support to the UN resolution against Syria, he said, “Some amendment in the resolution enabled us to support it. Every country, that either voted for or against the resolution had their own valid reason. Our friendship with China is time-tested and everlasting.” But Pakistan always stands for respecting independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of all the countries including Syria, he further said.

 

On the ongoing row over the US drone attacks, he said that such actions are unacceptable but after completion of the parliamentary process, Pakistani officials would have clear policy in this connection.

 

Regarding the issue of Afghan refugees, the spokesman reiterated that Pakistan is engaged with the UN agencies for their return but with honor and dignity.

 

Over the US pressure around the world against trade with Iran, he said that as far as the IP gas project is concerned there is no change in the position of Pakistan.

 

Basit said that trilateral summit of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran in Islamabad next week will focus on counter-terrorism and drug trafficking.

 

He said that Pakistan was quite busy on diplomatic front this week. Prime Minister Gilani visited Qatar and held negotiation on energy and bilateral relations. The foreign minister visited Russian Federation for improving bilateral relations, “Pakistan is facing energy crises and it also hold talks on this issue with Moscow”. “Russia also has interest in Pak-Iran gas project.” The Lankan President is also visiting Pakistan and so on, he said.

Pakistan, Afghanistan agree on joint strategy against terrorism

 

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar met her Afghan counterpart Zalmay Rasoul during her visit to Kabul. They also reiterated their commitment to steer bilateral relations between the two countries in accordance with the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, mutual respect and the UN Charter.

 

According to a Joint Communiqué‚ issued from Islamabad and Kabul simultaneously: “The two sides held in-depth consultations to work out a programme of enhanced engagement for promoting bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, re-affirmed the historical, cultural and religious bonds of friendship that exist between the two the countries and their peoples, reiterated commitment to steer bilateral relations in accordance with the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, mutual respect and the UN Charter, agreed that a strong, robust and independent bilateral relationship would greatly contribute to peace and stability in the region and emphasised the need of working together towards enhanced bilateral engagement for deepening interaction in diverse fields including security, development, transit, trade, economic and investment linkages, infra-structure and energy connectivity and people to people contacts for harnessing mutual benefits.”

 

Earlier, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar called on Afghan President Hamid Karzai and discussed Pak-Afghan relations.

 

Karzai told Khar that his country wanted better relations with Pakistan and expansion of cooperation in different fields.

Obama to define vision of US-India ties

MUMBAI: President Barack Obama will set out his vision for US relations with India on Monday, after raising expectations among his hosts by billing the friendship as “indispensable” to future peace and prosperity.

Obama will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, deliver a major address to parliament and be honoured at a state dinner on the third day of his visit to India, part of a four-nation, nine-day swing through Asia.

The US president will be expected to elaborate on his call Sunday for arch nuclear foes India and Pakistan to talk, to resolve their differences, and for Islamabad to do more to tackle extremists threatening its neighbour.

Sarkozy slams Israel PM”s ”foot-dragging” on peace: report

JERUSALEM: French President Nicolas Sarkozy has slammed Israel”s prime minister for “foot-dragging” amid international efforts to relaunch the Middle East peace process, an Israeli newspaper said Wednesday.

Citing unnamed officials, the centre-left Haaretz said Sarkozy had voiced disappointment with the hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a “very difficult” meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres.

“I”m disappointed with him,” Sarkozy reportedly said. “With the friendship, sympathy and commitment we have toward Israel, we still can”t accept this foot-dragging. I don”t understand where Netanyahu is going or what he wants.”

The comments were made during a meeting with Peres in Paris two weeks ago in which Sarkozy criticised Netanyahu for the first 15 minutes, the paper said.

Peres reportedly said that “trust between Israel and the Palestinians has been undermined,” but that Israel had accepted a two-state solution in principle and taken steps to boost the Palestinian economy in the West Bank.

The United States has for months led international efforts to press both sides to relaunch peace negotiations last suspended after the outbreak of the Gaza war in December 2008.

Netanyahu has called for direct talks with the Palestinians but they have refused to meet with him face-to-face unless he halts all settlement construction in the occupied West Bank including annexed east Jerusalem.

The dispute over settlements boiled over into a rare public spat between Israel and its closest ally the United States last month, and Israel has faced a chorus of criticism over the settlements from Western leaders.
