Bomb explosion kills at least 8 in Central Nigeria

A bomb explosion killed at least 8 people and injured 8 others in a village near the central Nigerian city of Jos on Friday, police said.

The state information office said 20 people were killed in the explosions but police could not confirm this. Hundreds of people died in religious and ethnic clashes at the start of the year in the Middle Belt, the central region of Africa’s most populous nation where the mostly-Muslim north meets the predominantly Christian south. There have been localised outbreaks of violence since then. The tension is rooted in decades of resentment between indigenous groups, mostly Christian or animist, who are vying for control of fertile farmlands and for economic and political power with migrants and settlers from the north.

British Conservatives seek power deal after poll deadlock

LONDON: Opposition Conservatives on Friday sought a “comprehensive” power-sharing deal with the small Liberal Democrat party after a knife-edge election left Britain in political limbo.

Conservative chief David Cameron made the offer after his party won most seats from Thursday”s general election, but fell short of the overall majority needed to definitively end 13 years of Labour rule.

“I want to make a big, open and comprehensive offer to the Liberal Democrats. I want us to work together in tackling our country”s big and urgent problems,” Cameron told a press conference.

“I hope we can reach agreement quickly,” he added.

With 638 of the 650 House of Commons seats declared, the Conservatives had 301 lawmakers compared to 255 for Labour, making it impossible for the Conservatives to win the 326 seats they need to govern alone.

Under Britain”s election rules, Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown has the right to attempt to form a coalition first, but he accepted Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg”s decision to talk with Cameron first.

Cameron and Clegg would be “entitled to take as much time as they feel necessary,” Brown said, while offering to talk to the Lib Dems if they failed.

“Clearly should the discussions between Mr. Cameron and Mr. Clegg come to nothing then I would of course be prepared to discuss with Mr. Clegg the areas where there may be some measure of agreement between our two parties,” he said.

Britain was forced into a hung parliament for the first time since 1974 after the Conservatives finished short of an absolute majority. Cameron still insisted that Brown had lost his mandate to govern.

Until Brown and Cameron”s statements, the centre-left prime minister”s key allies said Labour, which has ruled since 1997, would try to cling to power through a deal with the centrist Lib Dems.

But Clegg said the Conservatives, as the largest party in the new parliament, had the “first right to seek to govern”.

“It seems this morning that it is the Conservative Party that has more votes and more seats though not an absolute majority,” he said.

“That is why I think it is now for the Conservative Party to prove that it is capable of seeking to govern in the national interest.”

It was the first indication that the Lib Dems would be prepared to strike a deal with the Conservatives.

BEIJING: The death toll from fierce storms and torrential rains that ravaged southern China this week has risen to at least 58 people with tens of thousands left homeless, state media reported Friday.

The extreme weather hit southern parts of China overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, leaving at least 190 injured and a further 11 missing, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The southwestern municipality of Chongqing was the worst hit after a tornado and gale-force winds killed 29 people, destroyed homes, uprooted trees, flooded roads and caused landslides.

More than 70,000 people were displaced in Chongqing, according to the civil affairs ministry.

Authorities estimate that direct economic losses in Chongqing, which has more than 30 million people, could come to 420 million yuan (62 million dollars), China National Radio said.

Reports have said the bad weather was triggered when a heat wave in the south collided with a cold front from the north.

In neighbouring Hunan province, heavy rain triggered landslides, affecting more than 380,000 people and leaving 10 dead. The government had already moved 21,000 residents to safer areas, Xinhua reported.

046ad3e4f2traint Nigeria Violence: Ban Appeals RestraintUN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed grave concerns about the ethnic and religious violence in Nigeria where hundreds of people were murdered over the weekend.
‘I am deeply concerned that there has been more inter-religious violence with an appalling loss of life,” Ban told reporters. “I appeal to all concerned to exercise maximum restraint’. In recent years, fierce competition for control of fertile farmland and other resources between indigenous Christian groups and Muslim settlers from the north have repeatedly triggered conflicts and clashes. Since 2001, more than 2,000 people have been killed in communal violence in Plateau State.
‘Nigeria’s political and religious leaders should work together to address the underlining causes and achieve a common solution to the crisis’, said Ban.
