“I’m engaged!” she said. “It just happened a week ago.”

SEOUL: Canada and India on Friday launched talks on a free trade deal they said could boost gross domestic product in each nation by C$6 billion ($5.9 billion) a year and increase existing trade flows by 50 percent.
The leaders of the two countries said in a statement that “both sides expect a timely conclusion of an ambitious agreement”. It gave no further details on timing.
Canada has in recent years worked energetically to seal a number of free trade deals, partly in an effort to reduce its reliance on the U.S. economy. Three quarters of all Canadian exports go to the United States.
“India is projected to be the world’s third largest economy by 2050 and is a priority market for Canada,” said a Canadian background document.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said a deal with India could benefit Canadian exporters of forest products, minerals,

KABUL: Four troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed in an insurgent attack in western Afghanistan on Saturday, ISAF said, the latest foreign casualties in a war now in its 10th year.
Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since the Taliban were overthrown by U.S.-backed forces in late 2001. More than 2,000 foreign troops have died since the start of the war, more than half of those in the last two years.
The rising violence in Afghanistan will weigh heavily on President Barack Obama when his administration faces mid-term Congressional elections next month amid sagging public support for the war and ahead of a strategy review in December.
ISAF gave no further details regarding the nationality of the troops or the location of the attack. Troops from the United States, Spain and Italy are stationed in the west of the

LONDON: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) accused the world governing body on Saturday of mishandling fresh corruption allegations levelled against the national team following the third one-day international against England.
It called for further details after International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Friday’s match was being investigated following information from a British newspaper alleging a suspicious scoring pattern in Pakistan’s innings.
“The PCB is extremely perturbed by the recent allegations of corruption in the third ODI between England and Pakistan,” a PCB statement said.
“PCB regrets the way these allegations have been handled as being a full member of ICC it only came to know through media that investigations will be conducted by ICC. PCB feels that ICC should repose more confidence in its members.”

Have your credit card at the ready and your finger poised over the F5 button, for BlizzCon tickets go on sale soon.
Tickets for Activision Blizzard’s annual BlizzCon fan festival will go on sale Wednesday at 7 p.m. Pacific time. Those looking to nab the $150 tickets should bookmark the Blizzard store’s official sales page for the event.
BlizzCon 2010 will take place on October 22 and 23 in Anaheim, California. The convention caters to fans of World of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. Attendees get early hands-on with new games, fresh announcements around forthcoming Blizzard games and tons of great virtual and real-world swag. In 2009, BlizzCon attendees were treated to a live concert from Ozzy Osbourne.

In years prior, BlizzCon ticket sales have been problematic: Passes sell out quickly, and the rush to nab tickets has broken websites and wreaked havoc with online billing systems. Previous fails have been so epic that they inspired their own Flash game.
Should you miss the opportunity to buy BlizzCon tickets on Wednesday, another batch will go up for sale on Saturday June 5 at 10 a.m. Those who fail to grab the coveted tickets can always stay home watch the event on Pay-Per-View.
If this is something that dings your excitement, Blizzard would like you to review the official press release for further details, and make sure your browser is pointed towards the online store (http://us.blizzard.com/store/index.xml) with your clickin’ finger ready. Remember last year’s tickets sold out nearly before they went on sale, so you’d better be prepared!

Just last night I was watching a TV commercial featuring Dixie Carter, talking to the camera about a terrible disease whose name escapes me at the moment. And tonight comes the news that Carter has passed away at the age of 70. No further details have been released yet.
Carter is probably best known for her role as feisty, outspoken (well, all of the women were pretty feisty and outspoken on that show, weren’t they?) Julia Sugarbaker on ‘Designing Women,’ which ran on CBS for eight years. But younger TV watchers might know her from her role on ‘Desperate Housewives’ as Gloria, the evil ex-wife of Orson (she was nominated for an Emmy for the role). But she actually starred in several other TV shows over the years, including ‘Family Law,’ ‘Ladies Man,’ ‘Filthy Rich,’ ‘Out of the Blue,’ and ‘On Our Own,’ not to mention numerous guest roles on many other shows. Her first TV role was in the soap ‘The Doctors.’
I had completely forgotten that she starred in the later seasons of ‘Diff’rent Strokes,’ playing Maggie, Arthur Drummond’s new wife. When the show moved from NBC to ABC (for one last ill-conceived season), she couldn’t do the show because of her commitment to CBS and ‘Designing Women’ so she was replaced by Mary Ann Mobley. I’m thinking she got the better end of the deal there. She also appeared in several Broadway productions, including ‘The King and I,’ ‘Pal Joey,’ ‘Carousel,’ and ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie.’
Carter married actor Hal Holbrook in 1984. They appeared together in several episodes of ‘Designing Women’ and many other TV shows and made for TV movies. In fact, her last role was with Holbrook in the 2009 TV movie ‘That Evening Sun.’
Here’s a scene from ‘Designing Women,’ showing Julia in one of her many feisty moments.

Have Money Buy Parole: Rich India Gets Away:The controversy surrounding murder convict Manu Sharma’s parole ended with his dramatic surrender on Tuesday. The 34-year-old businessman, who is convicted of murdering former model Jessica Lal, was granted a two-month parole on September 22 on the grounds that his mother was seriously ill. However, Manu and his friends were found partying and allegedly misbehaving with girls at clubs in the Capital.
Manu’s misuse of his parole has reopened the debate over whether the rich and powerful can fool the system and get away with violating laws. The question that was being asked on CNN-IBN’s Face The Nation was: Manu Sharma case: Are India’s rich accountable to no one?
To try and answer the question on the panel of experts were: Chairman London Institute of Corporate Training, Alyque Padamsee; lawyer Rebecca John, former joint commissioner of police Delhi, Maxwell Pereira and Managing Partner Counselage Suhel Seth.
At the start of the show, 72 per cent of those who voted in said yes, India’s rich aren’t accountable to anyone while 28 per cent disagreed.
Parole Politics
Opening the debate, Rebecca John said it is not true that the rich and influential people always get away with violating laws. She held the administration responsible for Manu Sharma’s parole fiasco.
“The administration should have done a stringent verification of the grounds which were placed in the record for parole. The verification obviously did not take place and clearly Manu Sharma got away with it,” Rebecca said.
However, she agreed that in matters of parole the vast majority of people who are poor and are languishing in Indian jails do not get the benefit of the parole.
“Although their (poor) applications are pending for months the administration rarely accepts them sympathetically or compassionately. However, if you are rich and powerful it is easier for you to get it,” Rebecca said.
Seconding Rebecca’s opinion, Maxwell Pereira said it is because of their reach and contacts that the rich get paroles and easy legal aid.
“Money can buy anything in this country,” he said.
India’s Uncivilised Rich
Joining the debate, Suhel Seth said power works in different ways. Citing the case of Manu Sharma, he said it was because Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal’s son complained about Manu that the police took action against him.
“It is not only about being rich but it is also about who you know and how well you know them,” he said

PATTOKI: The prime minister said on Saturday that the National Reconciliation Ordinance was a relic of the past and stood buried forever.
He also brushed aside as irrelevant Article 58(2)b of the Constitution, which empowers the president to dissolve the National Assembly, because the country had a strong judiciary today.
Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani told reporters after inaugurating a power plant at Jhambar Kalan, near Pattoki, that the ruling coalition had fended off all threats to its survival.
‘There is no love-hate relation with any party in the ruling alliance. We have love-love relations with the PML-N and misunderstandings with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement have been resolved.
‘Rest assured the alliance is intact,’ said a smiling Gilani, gesturing towards Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
‘Our political system is stable. Democracy has again ushered in, but it requires time to gain roots. We are focussing on making institutions strong, but it again requires time,’ Mr Gilani said when asked if the political system was facing any threat.
About the South Waziristan operation, he expressed the hope that it would be completed before schedule. ‘It is a very effective operation and I salute the soldiers for sacrificing their lives for the country.’
The prime minister said Pakistan wanted peaceful relations with all neighbouring countries, especially India, on the basis of equality.
‘We want to resolve all core issues with India through dialogue. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also expressed the same sentiments.
‘The process of composite dialogue should continue,’ he said.
In reply to a question about Aitzaz Ahsan, Mr Gilani said a senior and sincere PPP worker like him would not quit the party under any circumstances.
In a speech at the inauguration ceremony of the 200MW power plant, the prime minister said it would not only boost electricity output, but would also be a catalyst for economic progress in Kasur district.
Mr Gilani said many more power plants were needed as the electricity crisis had frustrated the nation, hobbled industry and retarded economic growth.
