Unlike previous seasons, there were six remaining dancers participating in the final; in previous years, the finalists were restricted to only four dancers. We also didn’t get any face time with the dancers or choreographers through rehearsal clips, which was something of a disappointment, but we did get to see every boy dance with every girl — and almost every routine was a knock out. The judges were full of praise for everyone. Here are some of the highlights.

The first routine was a samba by Jason Gilkison, a choreographer who, for me, makes ballroom as interesting as hip hop. The dancers were Ryan di Lello and Kathryn McCormick, and they gave a performance that prompted judge Adam Shankman to proclaim this season “the rise of Kathryn,” referring to the ways in which Kathryn has stretched herself and grown as a dancer.

The most emotional dance of the evening was performed by the first-ever married couple to be in the Top 20 – much less the finale – of a season of “So You Think You Cane Dance.” Ashleigh and Ryan di Lello danced a Travis Wall contemporary piece that was simply outstanding. Ashleigh and Ryan shared the most tender of moments I’ve ever seen on the show as they ended the piece with a kiss, and then walked to hear their critique hand in hand, wiping tears away. The audience loved it, as did the judges. It was beautiful.

Kathryn and Jakob Karr were incredible in a contemporary routine by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. The piece was intense and powerful – a typical love story between a man and a woman – danced beautifully.

Tyce Diorio choreographed Ellenore Scott and Jakob in a fiery Broadway piece, where Ellenore really had the opportunity to shine — and shine she did. Judge Mary Murphy called her “smoldering.”

Russell Ferguson and Kathryn ended the show with a bang when they danced a Tabitha & Napolean hip hop number. The judges loved it, and were impressed by Kathryn’s ability to “get down and dirty” and keep up with Russell.

Tomorrow’s finale will start at 8 PM and will feature some big name guests, like Adam Lambert, Leona Lewis, Mary J. Blige, and Jennifer Lopez.
