NZ manager quits in wake of Bangladesh thrashing

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) general manager Geoff Allott said Monday he will step down at the end of the month, making him the first casualty of the Black Caps’ unprecedented series loss to Bangladesh.

Allot said the 0-4 whitewash to Bangladesh last month, described by local media as a low point in the team’s history, showed the NZC had to rethink its strategy and he was not part of the plan.

“I have effectively restructured myself out of a job, but I truly believe this to be in the best interests of cricket,” the former international bowler said.

“This was a difficult decision for me to make because I am passionate about the game that has given me so much.”

Allott had initially described the Bangladesh whitewash as a “bad hiccup” and insisted no management overhaul was needed for the Black caps to bounce back.

With 79% of the precincts reporting so far, Waterville mayor Paul LePage was declared the winner with 38% of the votes.

He had a little more than 36,000 votes.

LePage watched the returns Tuesday night in his hometown of Waterville.

The conservative is in his sixth year as the elm city’s mayor.

LePage knows that the results of his convincing win are probably surprising to many around the state.

“We started this race and everybody said, he doesn’t have a chance,” said LePage. “It took a couple of months for them to even call me a dark horse.”

LePage says he can bring fiscal responsibility to the table, something he says that’s been missing in Augusta for years.

If elected, he says his top three priorities will be focused on education, welfare and taxes.

LePage has been general manager for Marden’s stores across Maine since 1996.
His father was an abusive disciplinarian, so he ran away at home at age 11 and lived homeless on the streets for a few years, before eventually graduating from high school, working to put himself through college, eventually earning a master’s degree in business administration. He serves as general manager of Marden’s Salvage and Surplus and the mayor of Waterville.

After going elsewhere in the first three rounds, Jerry Reese said he’d draft a middle linebacker if they would find a “good” one.

In the fourth round, the Giants’ general manager apparently found his man: Nebraska’s Phillip Dillard.

“I’m ecstatic,” Dillard said on a conference call with reporters. “When that name went across the screen, I knew what their needs were and after going there for my visit, I was like, ‘Wow, everything just fell into place.’ It’s amazing.”

The 6-foot, 245-pound Dillard enters the NFL having been through more adversity than the average prospect. And in his case, he appears to have persevered and grown stronger.

The tough times for Dillard began with a torn ACL in the 2006 opener that knocked him out for the rest of the season. In 2008, he missed the last four games with an ankle injury then dropped as low as fourth string on the depth chart in the spring. And that January, his mother, Martha, died at the age of 56 after years of battling a heart condition and other medical issues.

That was the turning point for Dillard.

“I told her I was going to do something that would honor the family, that I’d stay out of trouble and do the right thing,” Dillard said. “All I had to do was work, not complain, not show attitude, keep great character, stay happy, not be a cancer in the locker room and not be mad because things weren’t going my way. That’s just how life goes; things don’t always go your way.

National Hockey League

PHILADELPHIA — The team game for the Philadelphia Flyers has never looked better this season than it does right now as they stand on the brink of advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinal Round.
But that synergy will be put to the test in Game 5 against the New Jersey Devils when they’re forced to carry on without the services of one their veteran leaders in Simon Gagne and their top sniper in Jeff Carter.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren issued the following statement Wednesday morning:

“Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne both suffered injuries to their right foot in Tuesday night’s game. Neither will be available to play Thursday, and both players are listed as day-to-day.”

The Flyers take a 3-1 series lead back to Newark with a chance to close out the Devils on Thursday at Prudential Center (7 p.m. ET).

9794df4911ke mexicali earthquakeLOS ANGELES: Mexicali Earthquake, A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake near the Mexico-US border Sunday rocked buildings as far away as Los Angeles and was felt in a wide area in the two countries, officials said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 2240 GMT, was at a depth of 10 kilometers (16 miles) was located 26 kilometers (16 miles) south-southwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico.

It was 64 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of San Luis, in the US state of Arizona, the USGS added.

The agency first reported a 6.9 magnitude quake but later upgraded its assessment.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said its initial assessment found “no significant damage or injuries” but had responded to an increase in automatic alarms and stuck elevators.

The fire department said was checking transportation infrastructure, large public venues, apartment buildings and power lines from the ground and the air to ensure safety.

The temblor was forceful enough to move buildings in Los Angeles and San Diego in southern California, as well as in Arizona, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The Times said rides were temporarily closed at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim.

KABC Television in Los Angeles said high-rise buildings in that city and in San Diego rocked back and forth when the quake hit and that some residents saw electric power poles moving.

The Yuma, Arizona, sheriff’s department also told AFP it was responding to many building alarms but that it had no immediate reports of injuries.

The Yuma Sun reported Fry’s grocery store front-end manager Karla Favela said that, “a little bit of everything” fell down every aisle of the store.

“The first thing I thought of — have you seen the movie ‘2012?’ The part when the grocery store splits in half?”

In Mexico, the National Seismological Institute said it had no early reports of injuries or damage in the northwestern state.

An agency official, Adriana Gonzalez, said that people had reported feeling the quake across a wide area of Baja California and Sonora states.9e3b74fc0dinter mexicali earthquake

The USSG said it had reports that quake was felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, some 460 kilometers (290 miles) from the epicenter as well asin Los Angeles, 360 kilometers (224 miles) away, and in Phoenix, Arizona, 300 kilometers (186 miles).

44a0275de81x 300 red soxNearly five months after the Yankees’ Mark Teixeira closed his glove on the 2009 World Series, the 2010 Major League Baseball season opened Sunday night with a game that always has Series-level passion: Yankees-Red Sox.

The Red Sox won, 9-7, at Fenway Park. (Read Ben Shpigel’s article.)

Both teams had been typically busy in the offseason, although the Yankees in less typical fashion. A summer after they shelled out $423.5 million on contracts for Teixeria, Sabathia and A. J. Burnett, General Manager Brian Cashman and the Yankees closed their checkbooks and picked up the phone.

Rather than pay the clubhouse and fan favorite Johnny Damon, the Yankees made a deal for Detroit outfielder and good-guy Curtis Granderson. To fill a hole in their pitching rotation, the Yankees sent outfielder Melky Cabrera and some prospects to the Atlanta Braves for former Yankee Javier Vasquez. The Yankees did make a few smaller free-agent signings, inking designated hitter Nick Johnson to a $5.5 million contract to bat in the two spot.

Despite the signings and the departure of a few familiar faces (namely Damon and World Series M.V.P. Hideki Matsui), the 2010 Yankees look very similar to the 2009 World Championship roster. Granderson will be the only new face in the field, and the core of Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettite and Mariano Rivera will be together again for a run at their sixth championship.

The Red Sox, instead, changed the attitude and style of their team, although their roster is far from revolutionized. Departing from their free-swinging days of 2004, Boston focused on building a defensive team that can withstand the grind of the regular season.

The Red Sox opted to let Jason Bay and his 36 homers walk to the Mets, instead signing veteran defensive center fielder Mike Cameron to help young Jacoby Ellsbury in the outfield. They opened their wallets for John Lackey, the marquee free-agent pitcher of the offseason, signing him to an $82.5 million deal. And they replaced Mike Lowell, the hero of the 2007 World Series, at third base with Gold Glove-winner Adrian Beltre.

Anytime the Yankees and Red Sox face off, the tension rises. The A.L. East race, playoffs, pride — a lot more rides on each game. Throw a World Series title defense in the mix, it gets even more interesting.
