TrendPK.com: Now that the Super Bowl is over, the next BIG game on our nation’s horizon is the Oscar telecast, better known as the Super Bowl for movie fans.

We’ll have plenty of news items crossing the wire from now until Feb. 26, when the Academy gets together to hand out their annual Best Of trophies, starting with today’s headlines:

- Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”) has been selected by the Board of Directors of the American Cinema Editors (ACE) to be honored with the organization’s prestigious ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award. The award will be presented at the 62nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 18, in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “Alexander Payne is a consistently fresh, exciting voice in film,” stated the ACE Board of Directors. “From the socially conscious and satirical “Citizen Ruth” to the rich and poignant comedies of “Sideways,” “About Schmidt” and most recently “The Descendants,” he is a filmmaker with unique vision and the ability to illuminate the humanity in every story he tells. We are delighted to recognize him with our most distinguished honor.”

- Awards Daily wonders if any film can upset “The Artist” at the Oscars. Good question.

- On that topic, Jeff Wells left Santa Barbara charmed by “Artist” star Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. Good for him.

- EW.com makes the case for “Shame,” which was shut out of the Oscars.

- Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia” swept the Danish Film Academy Awards. Well, yeah. Of course. What was it’s competition?

- The BAFTAs have picked Miss Piggy as their official red carpet host. That should be fun.

- And finally, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon will be held today, Feb. 6. Here’s a list of who’s expected to attend, including George Clooney, Viola Davis, Glenn Close, Rooney Mara, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Demian Bichir, Jean Dujardin, Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt.

TrendPK.com: Ratings turned around for “American Idol” as soon as Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler arrived in Season 10—nonetheless, the Parade 2011 Pop Culture Poll revealed that Lopez, then Tyler, are the two judges fans say the show could most do without.

Wrote Parade, “Seems viewers want to see Jennifer Lopez get off the floor of American Idol. She was voted as the one AI judge folks would most like to see sent packing.” Indeed, Lopez got 40% of the vote, but Tyler came in at a close second with 36%; Season 1 through 10 judge Randy Jackson, with only 24% of the vote, was considered indisposable by most fans.

Basterds, Precious, 30 Rock lead SAG Awards

60e27b117dawards Basterds, Precious, 30 Rock lead SAG AwardsLOS ANGELES: Sag Awards 2010 Winners, Basterds, Precious, 30 Rock lead SAG Awards, Three is the lucky number at the Screen Actors Guild Awards — that’s how many nominations the leading contenders in film and television have coming into Saturday’s ceremony.

“Inglorious Basterds,” ”Precious” and “Up in the Air” lead film nominees, while “Dexter,” ”30 Rock” and “The Closer” are the top TV competitors.

“Basterds” earned nods for its cast and supporting stars Christoph Waltz and Diane Kruger. “Precious” was also nominated for outstanding performance by a film cast, along with nods for star Gabourey Sidibe and supporting actress Mo’Nique. “Up in the Air” collected nominations for star George Clooney and supporting actresses Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.

Other films competing for best cast — SAG’s equivalent of a best-picture prize — include “The Hurt Locker,” ”An Education” and “Nine,” which also earned a nod for supporting actress Penelope Cruz.

“Dexter” and “The Closer” are up for best performance by a cast in a drama series, along with “Mad Men,” ”The Good Wife” and “True Blood.”

Michael C. Hall, who plays Dexter, is nominated for best actor and the show’s stunt team is up for outstanding performance by a stunt ensemble on TV. “The Closer” earned nods for its stunt team and star Kyra Sedgwick.

“30 Rock” collected nominations for its cast and stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. Other comedies up for cast honors are “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” ”Modern Family,” ”Glee” and “The Office.”

The actors union will present 13 awards during the two-hour dinner-party ceremony: Eight in television, five in film and a lifetime achievement award to 88-year-old Betty White, who starred in the TV comedy series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls.”

“Our show is so special compared to other awards shows,” said SAG Awards executive producer and director Jeff Margolis. “The fact that it is a show for actors, and it’s actors voting for actors for doing good work. It’s just different from the other shows, so we take great pride in keeping it different and special.”

The Screen Actors Guild Awards often are an accurate predictor of success at the Academy Awards because actors constitute the largest voting bloc for the Oscars.

Last year the cast award went to “Slumdog Millionaire,” which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar. However, this year one strong Best Picture contender, James Cameron’s “Avatar,” was not nominated in any SAG category.
