On a hot June evening in 1970, the riot started somewhere near Allen and Mariner streets, a block from the Allentown Art Festival.
Witnesses and reports from the time said Buffalo police arrived to quell a fight outside Mulligan’s Brick Bar — a major drinking hangout for young people at the time. A crowd of a few hundred people began to form outside the bar, and more police were called, including a patrolman named Timothy J. Scioli.

NCAA sanctions might force USC to vacate its Bowl Championship Series title-game victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, but the Trojans will remain national champions of the 2004 season in the Associated Press poll.
“The 2004 poll stands,” AP Sports Editor Terry Taylor confirmed in an e-mail to The Times. “The poll is intended to measure on-field performance. If teams are allowed to play, they’re allowed to be ranked and USC certainly played in 2004.”
There was speculation the AP might reconsider USC’s title because it recently called for a re-vote for NFL defensive rookie of the year. Brian Cushing, a former USC linebacker who plays for the Houston Texans, won the award but it was later announced that he had tested positive for a banned substance. Cushing kept his award after a second vote.
Taylor said USC’s 2004 national title was different.
“It would be impractical to revote,” Taylor said. “It’s been six years. Memories have faded and the poll board from that year is no longer intact.”

In 2003, USC finished No. 1 after the regular season in the AP and USA Today coaches’ poll but third in the BCS standings, preventing USC from playing in the BCS title game.
The AP, however, still crowned USC champions after the Trojans defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Louisiana State won the BCS title with a victory over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

canadian grand prix

Lewis Hamilton produced a scintillating drive to secure pole position for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal — the first of the season for the 2008 world champion and his McLaren team.
Hamilton squeezed every inch of speed out of his Mercedez-powered car to record a time of one minute 15.105 seconds on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.

Running on soft compound tires and so light of fuel his car had to be pushed back to the pits, the Briton edged out title leader Mark Webber and his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel, who will join him on the front row of the grid.
Hamilton admitted to being slightly “overwhelmed” after breaking Red Bull’s dominance of qualifying this season, which had seen them claim all seven previous poles.
“I have so many memories that reminded me of my first pole position and first grand prix win here in 2007,” said Hamilton, who always performs strongly in Canada and has claimed pole the last three times.
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest for Ferrari ahead of Hamilton’s teammate and reigning world champion Jenson Button.

The big surprise was the failure of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher to make the final section of qualifying as he struggled to only 13th fastest in his Mercedes.
Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi again impressed to claim sixth quickest for Force India followed by Brazilian Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Pole Robert Kubica for Renault.
German Adrian Sutil was ninth fastest in the second Force India, with Nico Rosberg again outqualifying Schumacher by claiming 10th in his Mercedes.
