Girl recovering after six transplants

A nine-year-old girl is making what doctors described as a remarkable recovery; days after surgeons transplanted six of her organs in a groundbreaking medical procedure.

The surgery performed last Tuesday on young Alannah Shevenell, sought to remove an aggressive cancerous growth festering since 2008, and that had attacked her stomach, liver, pancreas, esophagus, small intestine and spleen.

The surgery was performed in Boston, Massachusetts at Children s Hospital, one of this nation s most highly regarded medical facilities.

“For just under 100 days Alannah and her grandmother have been staying at Children s while she received treatment for a rare and aggressive cancer that was compromising several of her internal organs,” the hospital said in a statement.

“When all other treatments had failed, Heung Bae Kim, MD, director of Children s Pediatric Transplant Center suggested a multivisceral transplant that would remove Alannah s tumor and replace the six organs that had been damaged by its presence.

The nine-year old, who hails from the northeastern state of Maine, was the lucky recipient of organs from a recently deceased child of the same size and blood type, and which were able to be transplanted at the same time.

Kim told the Boston Globe newspaper that they anticipate that Alannah will make a complete recovery. “She will not have real restrictions in terms of activity,” he told the Globe.

Kangna in Sanjay Guptas Shootout At Wadala

It’s finally in place. Kangna Ranaut and not Vidya Balan will be playing gangster Manya Surve’s girl in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala.

There was plenty of back-and-forth over the matter. Gupta initially wanted Vidya Balan for the part. But Vidya was unable to say either yes or no to the project. Finally after a few months of waiting Gupta and his co-producers Balaji took the decision last week to go with Kangna Ranaut for the role.

Explaining the reason for his decision Gupta says, “We’ve opted for Kangna after a great deal of deliberation. Kangna seems physically and emotionally right to play Manya Surve’s girl.”

“John Abraham and Kangna have never been paired together,” adds Gupta hinting that the Vidya-John pair had already been done (in Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-Ishq).

Interestingly, this won’t be Kangna’s first role as a gangster’s girl. She started her career playing an on-screen version of Abu Salem’s girlfriend in Anurag Basu’s Gangster. More recenty, Kangna starred as a fictional Haji Mastan’s girl in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai.

The trick, we might add, is to make this part different from the earlier two gangster films.

Says Gupta, “The girl Kangna will play in Shootout At Wadala has two different looks and phases to carry off. First there will be the girl during college and then later after her involvement with Manya Surve, Kangna would have to portray a more mature woman. We’ve already discussed her looks for both the stages in the character’s evolution.”

Gupta says Kangna has been given two reference points. “I’ve basically told her that we want Smita Patil’s look from Namak Halaal and Shakti. I want to capture Kangna in that same earthy raw light that she so effortlessly projected in her earlier films.”

Kangna, apparently, has taken the role of Manya Surve’s girlfriend to heart and has already started her own homework on the emotional and physical look for the part.

ARRahmans clarification on Hosanna

A. R. Rahman made news with his latest compositions in the film Ek Deewana Tha, however an excess of anything can spell doom, and the same is the case with the track ‘Hosanna‘ which has been making waves in the music world.

While on one hand the track has been growing in popularity with each passing day, on the other hand, a certain group from the Christian Secular Forum (CSF) in Mumbai have raised a strong objection to the use of the word ‘Hosanna’, which apparently is a sacred term used within prayer songs. It is learnt that the word ‘Hosanna’ is a prayer in the Bible that is used by both Jews and Christians. While in the film, the same word is used in a song and dance sequence where a guy is proposing to his girl.

Clarifying about the outrage the song has caused composer Rahman said, “As with any film project I work on, I had spent several months researching before composing/writing all the songs for Ekk Dewaana Tha and had consulted friends who are Christian in particular about the use of the word ‘Hosanna’ in this song. The song was a sensation when it was released in the South a couple of years ago and it went on to win all possible music awards and was well received by all communities! Therefore I am deeply concerned about the sentiments of all those who appear to be hurt by this song.”

Further lyricist Javed Akhtar added saying, “When we write lyrics with great composers such as Mr. Rahman, who is one of the most respectable human beings I have had the pleasure of working with, the intention is never to insult any religion, why would we?”

The spokesperson from the production house, Fox Star Studios says, “Our organisation, our music partners Sony Music Entertainment, our Producers and all of us are responsible organisations and our view is that more often than not creativity, freedom of speech and expression in art form are stifled by some people who have their own agendas. We have replied to Mr. Joseph Dias of CSF today by letter.”

Shiney Ahuja maid 250x168 Bollywood star Ahuja bailed over maid caseMUMBAI: A court in the Indian city of Mumbai on Wednesday granted bail to Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja.

The Bombay High Court ordered the release of Ahuja, star of several films including “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” (A Thousand Desires), “Gangster” and “Life in a Metro”, who was sentenced to seven years in jail last month.

He was told to pay a bond of 50,000 rupees ($1,100) and not to leave the country without permission.

Ahuja, 37, had denied the offence, which allegedly took place at his home in the city in June 2009. His legal team called the judgement “perverse and illegal”, questioning the strength of the victim’s evidence and medical tests.

The trial judge ruled that scratch marks and DNA results were sufficient proof.

The victim withdrew her complaint in September, claiming she was told to make a complaint by another woman who had initially got her the job with the star.

“Apart from the girl denying the alleged offence, even the medical evidence is in negative,” the appeal document said, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

“Evidence given by doctors, who examined (Ahuja) and the victim, stated that there are no injuries on the girl’s body. Even the semen and blood samples were negative of (Ahuja)’s DNA.”

76b50f9assie bender Jesse Bender, Forced Marriage in PakistanThe parents of a California 13-year-old are under investigation after the girl told police she was being forced to go to Pakistan for an arranged marriage.

Jessie Bender, 13, from Hesperia, Calif., was last seen by her mother on Tuesday, February 22.
Melissa Bender, Jessie’s mother told KTLA that Jessie had been chatting with a man she met on Facebook, on the night she went missing.
“He was the last person she spoke to at 1:47 in the morning,” said Melissa.
Jessie Bender’s folks told authorities last month their daughter ran off because she didn’t want to go on a two-month family trip to her step-father’s native country. They then falsely claimed she was abducted by someone she met on Facebook, officials said.

However, after weeks of investigating leads that wrangled the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Office and police departments nationwide, authorities say it was all a lie.

“Bender family members misled detectives and withheld critical information,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Roxanne Walker said in a news release.
