Small earthquake shakes Southern California

PORT HUENEME: A small earthquake in Southern California has rocked an area of Ventura County near Port Hueneme, about 66 miles (106 kilometers) west of Los Angeles.

A preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey says the3.9-magnitude quake hit at 8:19 p.m. (0319 GMT) Friday nine miles east-southeast of Port Hueneme. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

6.9 magnitude quake strikes off Taiwan: USGS

TAIPEI: A strong 6.9 magnitude quake struck southeast of Taiwan Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The quake hit at 10:59 am (0259 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) with an epicentre 269 kilometres off the east Taiwanese city of Taitung, the USGS said.

Quake hits central Afghanistan

KABUL: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit central Afghanistan early Monday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake, which struck at 00:58 (2028 GMT Sunday), was centered 191 kilometers (119 miles) northwest of Kabul at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers, USGS said.

Obama urges world to move ”boldly” on Iran sanctions

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Tuesday appealed for the world to move “boldly and quickly” on imposing new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

“My interest is not having a long drawn-out process for months,” Obama said, appealing to “move forward boldly and quickly.”

Moderate quake strikes off Nicobar Islands: USGS

NEW DELHI: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indian Ocean”s Nicobar Islands on Wednesday, seismologists said.

The quake hit at 2:14 am (2014 GMT) 154 kilometres (95 miles) west of the town of Misha in the Indian-controlled territory, the US Geological Survey said.

It was registered at a depth of 28 kilometres. No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

Massive blast shakes central Baghdad

BAGHDAD: A massive explosion in front of the Iranian embassy shook central Baghdad on Sunday, an AFP correspondent said.

The explosion occurred around 11:20 am (0920 GMT), shattering windows in nearby buildings, with gunshots heard minutes later as emergency services rushed to the scene.
