Woods hits 6-under to share lead in Abu Dhabi
Tiger Woods took a share of the lead at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship on Saturday by “staying away from trouble” with a 6-under 66.
“It just seemed like I didn t do a lot of things right but I didn t do a lot of things wrong today, it was just very consistent,”
Woods said. “You know, made a couple putts here and there … I stayed away from trouble and tried to keep the ball towards the fat side of some of these pins and I think I did a pretty good job.”
The 14-time major winner finished at 11-under and a three-day total of 205. Woods is tied with newcomer Robert Rock, who birdied his final two holes to earn the 117th-ranked Englishman a first-ever pairing with the American on Sunday.
Rory McIlroy (68), Peter Hanson (64), Francesco Molinari (66) and Peter Lawrie (68) share third at 9-under. Four more players, including overnight leader Thorbjorn Olesen (71) of Denmark, are a shot further back.
Woods, who was two shots back after the second round, started climbing up the leaderboard Saturday with an opening birdie, followed by another on No. 7. He stepped up his game on the back nine, running off four birdies in a bogey-free round that was memorable not for stunning shots but Woods ability to sink clutch putts and keep his ball in play.
The former top-ranked golfer grabbed a share of the lead after he just missed eagle putt on 10 and settled for a birdie. He briefly took the outright lead with a birdie on 14 and rolled in a six-footer for birdie on 18. The crowd roared with every birdie but Woods held off from his trademark fist pumping.
“There s too many guys up there right now. There s a ton of guys with a chance to win,” Woods said. “You know, we have not separated ourselves from the field. The field is very bunched. I need to go out there and put together a solid round of golf, and I can t go out there and shoot even par and expect to win. I ve got to go out there and go get it.”
Rock, who got his first European Tour win last year in Italy in a playoff with Sergio Garcia, admitted he was star-struck at the prospect of facing off against Woods, calling him “the best guy I ve ever seen play golf.”

MELBOURNE: World number one Caroline Wozniacki says she has picked up tips on her mental approach to tennis from her golf major-winning boyfriend, Rory McIlroy, as she pursues her hunt for a maiden grand slam title.
Speaking after she reached the third round of the Australian Open, Wozniacki — who revealed she has also taken up golf — said McIlroy had passed on nuggets of wisdom based on his experiences on the golf course.
The Northern Irishman, whose game collapsed at the US Masters last April when he was within sight of victory, bounced back to win the US Open in style in June.
“Well, it’s just about you can’t really do anything about the past. You just need to look forward. You have a tournament now, and you want to do the best you can. That’s it,” she said, explaining McIlroy’s advice.
“Then if it goes well, it’s great. If not, you have the next one. It’s like tennis. So, you know, it’s just important not to dwell too much in the past.”
The 21-year-old Dane admitted that golf was not as easy as it looked.
“I’ve been out playing a little bit,” she said. “It’s good when you have someone there saying, OK, remember these few key points. Then I can hit it far.
“Once I’m out there alone and have to start playing, it goes right and left and up and down. I get so frustrated. Feel like I just want to break the clubs and go home.”
And she said the mental side of golf was even more demanding than tennis.
“It’s not so easy as it looks on TV,” she said. “It’s not just hitting a ball, standing still. It’s a lot of mental.
“I think it’s more mental than tennis actually. You do one wrong movement and the ball goes in the trees or somewhere and it’s difficult. So definitely it has surprised me how mentally strong you need to be.”
McIlroy also dabbles in tennis, she said, but without taking it seriously.
“I think both of us don’t want to, I mean, be too serious in the other sport. It’s just for fun. Yeah, have a bit of fun.” AGENCIES
Tiger Woods vows to make strong comeback
After a tumultuous year that included a sex scandal, divorce and a shortened, winless season on the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods said Tuesday that he’s continuing to improve his game and his life.
As a golfer I learned so much more this year than any other year, and as a person infinitely more, Woods said after practicing for the Chevron World Challenge, an 18-player tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks that benefits Woods’ charities.
So it’s been a very successful year even though it was a very painful year as well, said Woods, 34, a winner of 14 major championships who’s made major changes to his golf swing to help him win again.
Woods has won the Chevron World Challenge four times but has missed the tournament the last two years. He was recovering from knee surgery in 2008, and last year he withdrew because the event came only days after his Thanksgiving night car accident in Florida that set in motion his sensational sex scandal.Woods also lost golf’s No. 1 ranking — a position he held for more than five consecutive years — last month when Lee Westwood of England took the top spot.

There couldn’t have been a more potent reason for Phil to give it his all in the Masters tournament which just recently came to an end and I hope that it does some good for Phil Mickelson wife who was just less than a year ago diagnosed with having breast cancer. The man took home a green jacket for his superb play and it will be something that Phil Mickelson wife remembers as even though she was going through some health problems she took out the time and energy to visit the tournament to see her husband play, and I am sure that it was one of the reasons that Phil kept going so strong.
Breast cancer is something that no one could wish for and I’m sure the diagnoses of the disease for Phil Mickelson wife was a great reason of concern but then there might still be a chance of her fighting the disease to get to a healthier state. I just feel terrible for the woman and the golf player who must
have been going through so much while making those crucial drives and putts which goes to show just how talented the person is at golf – anyone who can win a tournament while having a plateful like this definitely has some nerves of steel.
Prayers for Phil Mickelson wife have been said by many around the world and I think you all could help too by putting a little word in with god to help her fight this disease which has been riddling her life with complications ever since she was diagnosed with it some eleven months ago.

Tiger Woods walked softly to the first tee for his practice round on Monday, and the throng of spectators on hand at 8 a.m. silently parted to let him pass, their reception as cool as the dew that sparkled on manicured grass.
There was a lot of gawking but very little talking and no hollering in the first few holes as Woods faced the public from inside the ropes for the first time since the final round of the 2009 Australian Masters in November. In the early going, most of the noise came from helicopters hovering near the perimeter of the golf course.
Polite applause accompanied Woods’s first-tee mulligan — he hooked his first tee shot into the woods bordering the left side of the first hole, eliciting a few gasps and probably the worst thing he heard all morning — “That one’s left — WAY left!” one fan said.
Fred Couples, who received some applause when he walked on the tee, made for a comfortable pairing for Woods, who was actually smiling at fans and responding to those who welcomed him back with a “Thank you.”
His game had some rust on it. He did reach the green at No. 2 with two big shots, but had problems at the par-three fourth, hitting his first ball into the front bunker and his second into the grandstand. When he played the first ball, he failed to get it out of the bunker.
Security was very much in evidence in the galleries following Woods, with uniformed guards from the Securitas firm sprinkled liberally throughout the large crowds. Among the spectators at the first tee was Nick Faldo, who stationed himself right next to the gallery rope at the first tee as a show of support to Woods — whose feathers he once ruffled by critiquing his swing at the 2006 British Open at Hoylake.
Following Woods were his agent Mark Steinberg and publicist Glenn Greenspan as well as his swing coach Hank Haney. Steinberg and Greenspan were smiling and greeting reporters, shaking hands and seeming relaxed. The Masters chairman, Billy Payne, watched play at the first hole from a less conspicuous spot in the shade of the tall pines adjacent to the landing area at No. 1.
Payne said he was not planning to be in attendance for the Woods news conference later in the afternoon. There had been some speculation that the chairman would preside over the interview, but Payne deferred to the media committee chairman, Craig Heatley.
Judging from the comportment of the galleries in the morning, there would not be any questions in the afternoon about heckling or any other forms of rudeness aimed at Woods. It may have been that some in the gallery picked up the practice round sheets, available, as always, in stands all over the course, which carry the famous comments on conduct, customs and etiquette from the tournament founder, Bob Jones, written in 1967.
“In golf, customs of etiquette and decorum are just as important as rules governing play,” Jones wrote. “It is appropriate for spectators to applaud successful strokes in proportion to difficulty but excessive demonstrations by a player or his partisans are not proper because of the possible effects on other players.”
