DHAKA: Paceman Rubel Hossain stunned New Zealand with four wickets to help Bangladesh beat the tourists by three runs on Sunday and complete a 4-0 series sweep.

New Zealand were bowled out for 171 with just three balls remaining and just shy of their target of 174, with Rubel taking the final wicket when he bowled Kyle Mills in a dramatic finish at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

Rubel finished with four for 25 — his best figures in limited-overs internationals — as Bangladesh successfully defended what was a meagre total.

It was the fifth and final one-dayer of the series. One match was rained off.

Rubel removed dangerman Brendon McCullum and helped reduce New Zealand to 20-5 with his fierce opening spell of 3-13 before Daniel Vettori and Grant Elliott put on 86 for the sixth wicket.

New central contracts for NZ cricketers

WELLINGTON: Four new players were added Tuesday to New Zealand”s elite group of 20 contracted cricketers who will form the basis of Black Caps squads over the next year.

Nathan McCullum, Andy McKay, B.J. Watling and Kane Williamson have replaced Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Daniel Flynn and James Franklin.

Allrounder Scott Styris also returns after missing a contract last year and replaces the now retired Shane Bond while Daryl Tuffey remained on the list after being reinstated following Iain O”Brien”s mid-season retirement.

New Zealand players are ranked by the selectors against set criteria in respect of Test cricket, one-day and Twenty20 internationals and the top 20 are offered contracts.

Greatbatch said players who missed out on contracts can still play their way into the New Zealand side through their performances in the domestic cricket competition.

Contracted players: Brent Arnel, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Tim McIntosh, Andy McKay, Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

Fulton dropped, paid price for poor performance

3a782e52bdce Fulton dropped, paid price for poor performanceWELLINGTON : Peter Fulton has paid the price for a poor run of form. South African-born batsman BJ Watling is poised to make his test cricket debut in the series finale against Pakistan in Napier from Friday after joining the squad today at the expense of Peter Fulton.

Watling, 24, is the only change in a 13-man squad named for the third test as New Zealand’s selection panel moved to partially remedy a batting unit guilty of under-performing in Dunedin and Wellington, nzherald.co.nz reported.

Watling opens the batting for Northern Districts and is also capable of filling a position in the middle order.

He could replace an out-of-form Tim McIntosh and form a new opening partnership with Martin Guptill or be a straight swap for Fulton at No 5.

Fulton’s comeback to test cricket was unspectacular – 42 runs at 10.5 and memorable for his duck in the second innings at Dunedin when he failed to request a review of his leg before wicket dismissal despite suspecting the ball had hit his bat.

McIntosh retains his place in the squad despite scoring 37 runs at 9.25. Flynn, 57 runs at 14.25, and Guptill, 75 at 18.75, have also been persevered with.

Long identified as a player for the future, Watling made his New Zealand debut during the Twenty20 component of the Pakistan tour last month in the United Arab Emirates.

Watling, who made his first class debut in 2004-05, pushed for selection thanks to compelling form in the current Plunket Shield four-day competition – 241 runs at 80.33 including scores of 90 and 136.

Tours to Australia and India with the Emerging Players and A teams during the New Zealand winter also indicated the right hander and capable wicketkeeper was in contention.

“He’s a quality young player with good technique,” selector Mark Greatbatch said.

Although New Zealand were beaten by 141 runs in the second test at the Basin Reserve inside four days yesterday – principally because they made only 99 in their first innings – Greatbatch said widespread changes were never likely.

“There was a lot of discussion about the batting line-up, but this was not a time for wholesale change. We are aiming to give guys the opportunity to succeed,” he said.

Black Caps squad

Daniel Vettori (captain), Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Grant Elliott, Brendon McCullum, Daryl Tuffey, Iain O’Brien, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, Chris Martin.

Kiwis hold nerve to clinch 32-run win

cf43fc51adst Kiwis hold nerve to clinch 32 run winUmar Akmal’s heroic knock of 75 (from 174 balls with 5 fours and a six) went in vain as New Zealand won the first Test in a thrilling fashion by 32 runs. The younger Akmal making his Test Debut dazzled with 129 in the first innings as well but the Pakistani top order failed to stand up against the Kiwi attack. The visitors were set a perfectly chasable target of 251 on the last day.

New Zealand resumed the final day at 147 for 8 and could add up just 5 more runs despite having Grant Elliott unbeaten at the end of Day four. Umar Gul finished the Kiwi innings taking the wickets of O’Brien and Elliott to leave his team a target of 251.

The hosts straightaway had Pakistan on the backfoot  removing the openers cheaply. They got one more wicket in Fawad Alam before the lunch break and Pak was at a shaky 53 for 3 at the break with Yousuf and Umar Akmal at the crease. Chris Martin provided an important breakthrough by ending Skipper Mohammad Yousuf’s stay for 41 and also a 71-run stand. Umar Akmal kept the fight going with Shoaib Malik (32) and the runs kept flowing before the former got done in by a short ball again.

At Tea, Pakistan was at 165 for 5 with the Akmal brothers at the crease and their side hoping for a repeat of their fighting partnership in the first innings. Shane Bond made sure that the Akmals did not run away with the game by taking a return catch offered by Umar to reduce Pak to 195 for 6. That was the moment for New Zealand and they seized it with both ends taking the remaining four wickets for 21 runs. The important wicket of Kamran Akmal (27) was taken by Iain O’Brien.

It was a perfect team effort from the Kiwi bowlers with Bond, O’Brien taking three wickets each while Martin and Vettori taking two each. Shane Bond picked up the Man of the Match.

c9741263adst Australia race towards a winnings position at GabbaWest Indies are down and out in the first Test at Gabba with a score of 134 for 5 at the close of Day 2 in reply to Australia’s 480 for 8 declared. West Indies are facing a huge deficit of 346 and are on course of following on! They have been revived slightly though through an unbroken 6th wicket stand of 38 between no.3 Travis Dowlin (40*) and wicket keeper Denesh Ramdin (18*).

Australia added about 160 runs on the second day before declaring their innings just before Tea. Marcus North, the overnight batsman went onto score 79 while Nathan  Hauritz scored a maiden fifty. Windies started in a rapid manner smashing 41 on the board in the six overs before Tea but after the break lost their way totally. Hilfenhaus got rid of a dangerous Gayle on 31 which began a batting collapse. The other pacers followed him and Windies found themselves at 96 for 5 inside 30 overs.

The Australian bowlers got good pace off the wicket which caused the downfall of the West Indian batsman. Chanderpaul was one of them as an inswinger from Siddle skidded through to strike the pad in a shuffle across the stumps.

India wrap up an innings victory on fourth day

9c93b2dc44ur India wrap up an innings victory on fourth dayIndia took the remaining six wickets of Sri Lanka an hour before Tea to wrap up the second Test at Kanpur with an innings and 144 run-victory. The hosts took four wickets in the first session itself but were kept waiting for about 90 minutes with tailender Ajantha Mendis putting on a frustrating 73-run stand with Thilan Samaraweera (78*).

Zaheer Khan provided the perfect start for India this morning by bouncing out Angelo Mathews in the second over of the day’s play. He along with Sreesanth lost the plot though to be replaced with spin at both ends. India had to wait for about an hour before Harbhajan Singh found a way to spin one through the bat pad gap of Prasanna Jayawardene (29) from round the sticks. Harbhajan’s off break broke the 6th wicket stand of 61.

Harbhajan Singh got one more wicket when the left handed Rangana Herath missing a sweep to be lbw and Muttiah Muralidaran (29 from 11 balls) too missed a sweep but to get bowled. Pragyan Ojha was the bowler to dismiss Murali. India had to come back after lunch to take the remaining two wickets and the match was finished when no.11 Chanaka Welegedara was caught and bowled off a leading edge by Pragyan Ojha.  Before than Yuvraj Singh broke the frustrating 9th wicket partnership by trapping Mendis with an arm ball. Samaraweera stayed unbeaten on 78 (from 123 balls with 11 fours). Sri Lanka were bowled out for 269 in less than 66 overs.

Sreesanth was given the Man of the Match for taking six wickets yesterday. Incidentally this is the 100th win for India in Test Matches.

Asif bowls Pak back in the game

64222bd599if1 Asif bowls Pak back in the gamePakistan have New Zealand reeling at 147 for 8 at stumps on Day 4 in their second innings with Mohammad Asif picking up four wickets. New Zealand still have a slight edge over Pakistan in winning the Test match with a lead of 244 and two wickets in hand. Weather conditions will play a crucial role in deciding the result of the game, it had his toll even on the fourth day with rain and bad light eating off crucial time.

The visitors stretched their first innings total to 332 from an overnight score of 307 for 8 which cut the New Zealand lead to 97 runs. In their second innings, Mohammad Aamer came up with another first over dismissal, this time removing Martin Guptill in the fourth ball. In the 3rd over, Asif provided the double break with Flynn getting out lbw for a duck as well.

New Zealand recovered from 0 for 2 to 68 for 2 at lunch with Ross Taylor batting fluently on 48. Pakistan after lunch shot back with quick wickets to turn the match on its head. Five wickets went down in a hurry at the addition of just 36 runs. Khurram Manzoor initiated the downfall for the Kiwis with a direct throw to run out Ross Taylor (59 from 83 balls with 7 fours and a six). Peter Fulton and Brendon McCullum were out for 0 to make it four ducks in this Kiwi innings! First innings hero Daniel Vettori was dismissed by Asif cheaply.

The Kiwis still have Grant Elliott batting on 20 along with Iain O’Brien who is not a bad tailender at all. Pakistan have certainly got back into the match through their bowlers but now its all upto their top order to come good and seize the moment provided the weather holds good. Asif had a rich haul of 4 for 41 in 17.5 overs to follow up with his 4 for 108 in the first innings. Aamer complemented him with a couple of wickets.

New Zealand announce Squad for Dunedin Test

aa52085867in New Zealand announce Squad for Dunedin TestNew Zealand have picked a 13-man squad to face Pakistan in the first Test at Dunedin which begins on the 24th of this month. The New Zealand team is bolstered with the re-entry of Shane Bond who gets to play Test Cricket after a gap of two years!

The hosts are unlucky to miss one of their key players in Jesse Ryder who is still recovering from an abductor strain which he picked up during his stint in the IPL. Ryder’s place has gone to Peter Fulton who has a mediocre average of under 25.00 and just a fifty in the 8 Tests so far in his career. It could be a toss up between Fulton and Tim McIntosh in the end. McIntosh is fresh from a century against Pakistanis at Queensland which could give him the nod ahead of Fulton.

Apart from Bond, medium pacer Daryl Tuffey makes a comeback in the Test team after similar adventures in the rebel Indian Cricket League. Most likely Tuffey could sit out with New Zealand already having Chris Martin and Iain O’Brien in the ranks to partner with Bond.

New Zealand Squad for first Test at Dunedin : Daniel Vettori (Captain), Tim McIntosh, Daniel Flynn, Ross Taylor, Peter Fulton, Martin Guptill, Grant Elliott, Brendon McCullum (wk), Iain O’Brien, Shane Bond, Jeetan Patel, Daryl Tuffey, Chris Martin

Imran Farhat on 10 and Fawad Alam on 0 are at the crease for the tourists. This match could be a good eposure for young Umar Akmal who is lining up for a Test Match Debut at Dunedin.
