Swedish climber dies on K2: officials
GILGIT: A mountain climber from Sweden plummeted to his death while climbing the world”s second highest mountain, K2 in the Himalayas of northern Pakistan, local officials said.
Frederik Ericsson was trying to conquer 8,611-metre (28,251-feet) peak but fell 1,000 metres and was buried under heavy snow, a senior government official in the town of Shigar said.
“I have issued his death certificate after his guide told police that he died,” said the official, Zamir Hussain.
“He died some four days back,” Hussain added.
Police in Shigar also confirmed the death.
Ericsson”s Austrian climbing partners said last week that they believed he had died after falling near the summit.
He was climbing with Austrian Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, who narrowly missed a bid to be the first woman to conquer all 14 of the world”s 8,000-metre peaks.
According to his website, Ericsson was attempting to ski the world”s three highest peaks: Mount Everest, K2 and Kanchenjunga on the border between Nepal and China.
Updates on his site indicated the climbers had had warm conditions on K2 in recent days.
K2 is regarded by climbers as far more dangerous and difficult to scale than Mount Everest, the world”s highest peak, and has a rate of deaths to successful summit attempts almost five times as high.
Italian climbers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli were the first to scale K2 on July 31, 1954. Between then and 2007, there have been 284 successful ascents and 66 fatalities.

The controversial PG&E-backed Prop 16 has been defeated, and former tech execs Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina both won their races in Tuesday’s election. Those were some of the results that could effect the greentech industry in California.
Prop 16 — the proposition that sought to prohibit local governments from getting into the electricity industry — was so close this morning, that it was only officially called around 8AM. But it was narrowly defeated, despite the fact that utility PG&E spent reportedly $46 million on a campaign to get Prop 16 passed. As Gary Cook, Greenpeace analyst, wrote in an opinion column for us, if Prop 16 had passed it would have stifled innovation in the energy and smart grid industry.
While Prop 16 failing was surprising and a positive step for greentech, two candidates that aren’t exactly friendly to the industry (not surprisingly) moved ahead in their races. Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman won the Republican gubernatorial race, and will now face Attorney General Jerry Brown in November. Whitman has called for a one-year moratorium on certain parts of AB 32 (the climate change bill) saying that is needed to give the state’s businesses and economy a chance to recover from the ongoing recession. This measure sought to prohibit municipalities from getting into the energy market. Those for the bill spent millions campaigning while those who opposed the bill spent a mere $100,000 on their campaign and still the measure lost support.
Now the elections are heating up and November 4th will be a big day for voters. We will be watching the California races very closely to see if Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina will meet the ultimate challenge of winning the election

A hung Parliament has left Britain at a huge disadvantage in negotiating the final wording of a controversial EU directive that will clamp down on hedge funds and private equity.
Lisa Cawley, regulatory partner of law firm Kirkland & Ellis, said: “There is a real concern that the UK election result leaves a major part of our financial services industry without a voice at a critical point in the EU legislative process.”
The Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers, which is to be agreed today in Brussels, marks a determined effort by European regulators to crack down on alternative investment companies in the wake of the financial crisis.
The European Parliament is expected to approve strict new rules forcing alternative investment managers to disclose far more about their investment strategies and the way they pay staff.
The currency climbed for a second day after last week completing its biggest drop against the dollar since the collapse of global credit markets in October 2008. European officials declined to disclose the size of the stabilization fund, to be made up of money borrowed by the EU’s central authorities. The mechanism may be worth 500 billion euros, said a government official familiar with the talks in Brussels.
“Markets’ assessment of the effectiveness of the package will be critical to the fortunes of the euro, equity markets and risk appetite early in the week,” Mike Jones, a currency strategist at Bank of New Zealand Ltd. in Wellington, wrote in a note to clients.

Okay, maybe saying he can’t get no respect is a bit over the top. He was the 6th leading vote getter among rookies. Still, he deserved to be on the first team, and his whole season has been a bit ridiculous considering his talent.
The season started with him sliding all the way to the 43rd pick of the draft, behind such luminaries as Victor Claver, Sergio Llull, Wayne Ellington, and Derrick Brown. Then, after he tore up the Summer League and pre-season, he was benched by Byron Scott in favor of Morris Peterson and Devin Brown. Wait, scratch that, he wasn’t just benched. He was put on the inactive list and didn’t even dress. Then, when Jeff Bower took over and he got a nice 20 minutes a game, he still spent a lot of time playing behind Devin Brown and Morris Peterson.
Now the All-NBA Rookie teams have come out, and he has once again slipped out of the top tier of rookies. Out of the 29 who could vote for him, only 6 coaches felt he was one of the top five rookies in the league. (voting ignores position, so that’s not an excuse) 15 apparently thought that Taj Gibson, the 9 point, 7 rebound forward in Chicago, was better.
