Pakistani rocker: bin Laden death great for Muslims

WASHINGTON: Top Pakistani musician Salman Ahmad has hailed Osama bin Laden’s death as a victory for the Islamic world and demanded accountability over how the Al-Qaeda chief lived in his country for years.
The rock star, whose band Junoon is one of the most popular acts in South Asia with more than 30 million albums sold, said Pakistanis felt “humiliated” that the world’s most-wanted man resided in the garrison town of Abbottabad.
“In the last 1,400 years of Islamic history, there has rarely been a man or woman — Muslim or non-Muslim — who has caused more damage to Muslims around the world than Osama bin Laden,” Ahmad, who recently performed in Washington, told AFP.
“On 9/11, those terrorists who flew the planes into the buildings overnight hijacked Islam so that anything that has to do with Islam, anything that has to do with Muslim culture, would be equated now with the face of Osama bin Laden.
“So he being taken out in a military operation I think is a great thing for the Muslim world as well as the planet,” he said.
A team of elite US Navy SEALs swooped secretly into Abbottabad on May 2, shooting dead bin Laden nearly 10 years after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Ahmad said he had “massive questions” — including how bin Laden lived a stone’s throw from Pakistan’s top military academy and why he apparently felt safe enough to maintain minimum protection.
He also asked how the military and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) did not detect a US operation deep into Pakistani territory.
“Are you saying that everybody is so incompetent, everybody was asleep?” he said. “This was Osama bin Laden, man.”
“If there was any other country where this happened — the intelligence failure on Osama and the intelligence failure on the US operation — the first thing the president would do is ask for the resignation of the intelligence chief and ask many questions of the army chief,” he said.
“Pakistan, for its own in-house accountability, needs to ask these questions of its leaders,” he said. “You have a military chief, an ISI chief — all of these people are at the end of the day supposed to be answerable to the people.”
Ahmad is not a newcomer to the issue. In the 1990s, Pakistani television banned Junoon’s song “Ehtesaab” (“Accountability”), whose accompanying video mercilessly mocked corruption by the country’s leaders.
Ahmad, 47, left a medical career to lead “Junoon,” which means “passion” in Urdu. He now teaches music at the City University of New York’s Queens College but returns regularly to Pakistan to perform and lead humanitarian efforts.
He teamed up with Peter Gabriel for the song “Open Your Eyes,” with each download contributing funds for survivors of the floods that devastated Pakistan last year.
In a recent autobiography entitled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Jihad,” Ahmad counted Led Zeppelin among his influences but saw himself in the tradition of Sufism — the mystical movement in Islam. The book’s title, he said, was part of his effort to take back the word “jihad,” or struggle, from extremists.
Sufi shrines have faced a wave of attacks in recent years in Pakistan, part of the violence that has left thousands dead.
Ahmad dismissed the significance of the violence and recalled Baba Bulleh Shah, the Punjabi Sufi poet who was branded a heretic and denied an Islamic burial when he died in 1757.
“But hundred of years later there are hundreds of thousands of people who go to Baba Bulleh Shah’s shrine” in the Pakistani city of Kasur, he said.
“They can blow up a shrine and get on the media radar,” he said. “But despite their disruption, society has a resilience that is shown throughout the centuries.”
Ahmad traveled to Washington for a recent concert by Sufis from the Indian city of Ajmer who performed qawwali, the voice-bending devotional music popularized overseas by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
Ahmad joined in with his guitar, jamming with the Ajmer Sufis for his rendition of Baba Bulleh Shah’s celebrated poem, “I Know Not Who I Am,” which criticized doctrinairism.
“Sufism is not some sort of trend. It’s been there for centuries and it’s the glue of this region,” he said.
“You have these snapshots of political turmoil and extremism, but at the end of the day what keeps society together is this sort of deep cultural unity.” AGENCIES

Music award shows such as the Country Music Television cable channel’s CMT Awards at 8 tonight exist chiefly to recognize distinguished works, typically of the recent past — and attract audiences with all the star power they can muster — rather than to provide a forum for the discovery of new music.
But tonight’s ceremony from Nashville highlighting viewers’ favorite country music videos of the past year also is giving a first look and listen to singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson’s ambitious new album “The Guitar Songs,” which doesn’t come out until September.
Johnson, who gained critical accolades and a healthy amount of commercial success for his 2008 album “That Lonesome Song” and its award-laden single “In Color” apparently has been on a writing frenzy. He’s assembled two CDs worth of new material: 25 songs, including “Macon,” the one he’s slated to sing tonight at the CMT event, an atmospheric tale of a Georgia trucker on his way home.
Among the show’s other performers announced so far are Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and the Zac Brown Band. Award presenters include Taylor Swift, Faith Hill, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Jada Pinkett-
Smith, Martina McBride, Kellie Pickler, Blake Shelton, Gloriana and Laura Bell Bundy. This year’s leading nominees include Swift, Urban, Paisley, Keith, Underwood and Reba McEntire.Blake Shelton shared Collaborative Video of the Year award with Trace Adkins for their duet in “Hillbilly Bone”. Thanking Reba who presented the honor, Blake told the crowd packed into Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on June 9, “Thanks to the fans for voting for us. Thanks to Trace Adkins for being the biggest bad-ass in country music.”
Luke Bryan got USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year, thanking fans for changing his life. “Y’all are doing it every day,” he said in gratitude. Furthermore, Shaun Shilva whose credits include Luke’s “Do I” music video was named Director of the Year.

Gyroscope and Retinal Display: iPhone 4 Explained
After the announcement of the new Iphone 4G many people have been talking about the included gyroscope. This 3-axis gyroscope combined with the accelerometer can add a full 3D motion support, and as Steve Jobs notes, it is “perfect for gaming”.
On the other hand people are looking for the Iphone 4 release date.
According to the information we received today, the phone will be released on June 24th in the U.S. other countries have not been mentioned so far.
According to Jobs, the text will look just like it would in fine print form – this will be perfect for all those who have trouble reading the text on the current iPhone 3GS, 3G or 2G models. More on this can be found on The Next Web.

Gyroscope was the other feature mentioned, this is something that will be used while playing games – such as the Guitar Hero app. Now while you play a game you can tilt it back-and-forth and side-to-side, this will certainly make gaming all the more enjoyable now. Neil Young Long May You Run Lyrics
Neil Young Long May You Run Lyrics latest news updates :- Conan O’Brien ended his 20-plus years of working for NBC tonight and not only did he do it with class and dignity, he did it with the Godfather of Grunge Neil Young!!.
Just as he mentioned during the show, Conan is a pretty lucky dude. In my experience, when most folks get fired after 7 months they don’t even get a musical card, much less a musical performance by Neil Young! I hope the unemployment rate doesn’t skyrocket when Neil Young fans with unrealistic expectations show up for work tomorrow ready willing and able to get terminated and get terminated quick!
Here are the lyrics to “Long May You Run” by Neil Young:
We’ve been through
some things together
With trunks of memories still to come
We found things to do
in stormy weather
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining
in the sun
Long may you run.
Well, it was
back in Blind River in 1962
When I last saw you alive
But we missed that shift
on the long decline
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining
in the sun
Long may you run.
Maybe The Beach Boys
have got you now
With those waves singing “Caroline No”
Rollin’ down that empty ocean road
Gettin’ to the
surf on time.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining
in the sun
Long may you run.

Melody Gardot
Melody Gardot latest news updates :- Rising jazz singer Melody Gardot is getting ready to play her first concert in Seoul.

Gardot, who received critical acclaim for her latest album, “My One and Only Thrill,” will be performing at Centennial Hall, Yonsei University, March 16.
“My One and Only Thrill,” her second album, debuted at number 2 on the Billboard charts, and topped the charts in Japan. The 24-year-old has received acclaim for her silky smooth vocals and songwriting skills, but it’s her story of overcoming physical hardships that is truly inspiring.
A fashion student at Community College of Philadelphia, Gardot’s life changed when she was involved in a serious accident in Philadelphia when she was 19 years old. She was riding a bicycle when she was hit by a car. As a result, she suffered severe neural, spinal and pelvic injuries that kept her in the hospital for a year. One of the effects of her injuries is hypersensitivity to both light and sound, requiring her to wear dark sunglasses all the time.
During her treatment, a doctor suggested music therapy to help with her memory loss. Gardot started to learn how to sing, play the guitar and write songs. The experience has prompted Gardot to become an advocate of music therapy, having visited hospitals and universities to talk about how music can reconnect neural pathways in the brain, improve speech and boost one’s spirits.
After recovering from the accident, Gardot started playing at various venues in Philadelphia. She soon recorded a demo, which attracted the attention of major record label Universal Music. Her debut album “Worrisome Heart” was released in 2006.
In 2008, she started working with producer Larry Klein on “My One and Only Thrill. Released last year, it has been praised for its sophisticated jazz and blues sound. She wrote all the songs on the album, except for the bossa nova version of “Over the Rainbow.”
“Being able to listen to Melody’s beautiful voice and enjoy her songs is a real blessing. Her endless love of music and her thoughtful demeanor towards her fans really proves her to be a true musician who sings and performs from her heart and soul,” organizer Private Curve said, in a statement.

John Fogerty, John Fogerty Bio: Now that it has revised the Rootsy country rock and soil at the beginning of his first day back to Creedence Clearwater Revival on “The Blue Ridge Ranger Rides Again“, John Fogerty says he’s ready to start sound like, well.

“I really feel that the next recording project, probably will surely rock and roll ‘and my traditional rock’ n ‘roll sound environment. “That is something I do best and that’s certainly what I am most familiar, and as a child that is what happened most of my time doing.”
Fogerty, says it is working on the newest material in the vein of 2007 the “renaissance” and his other solo albums, adding that writing is part of the normal course of his life. “I play the guitar every day … about three hours. I’m always trying to improve,” he explains. “Having a guitar in his hands all the time causes the music. It triggers creativity and helps me write songs. So in due course, I’ll have enough songs to go and make an album and you’ll hear from me.”
John FogertyAnd when might that be? “I better not say,” says Fogerty with a laugh. “That’s like predicting the World Series or something.’d Rather not have that kind of pressure.”
Fans will be hearing much from him, meanwhile, of course. Fogerty just released a new DVD, “Comin ‘Down the Road: The concert at Royal Albert Hall”, and begins a 12 date tour Nov. 12 at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.
Fogerty will perform on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” on 10 November and is preparing for his appearance on Saturday in “PBS” Live By Request “, which begins at 9 pm EST, with fans asking for songs and make questions through Facebook, Twitter and other social media. Original MTV VJ Mark Goodman is serving as host and moderator.

Lady Gaga VMA Pictures

You were probably too busy a.) praising the Lord for the invention of DVR and then b.) poring over Lady Gaga’s bloody “Paparazzi” performance to even notice that she arrived on the VMA red carpet with Kermit the Frog or that she changed costumes more times in one night than most people change clothes in a week.
Lady Gaga’s VMA outfits were a Victorian-inspired, high-drama, campy celebration of lace and embellishments — metal collars, wild wigs, masks, feathers, and a fantastically liberal application of pearls and other appliques in ways they were previously never meant to be worn. (Unless you’re the type of lady for whom wearing embroidery loops is commonplace.)
Let’s reexamine Lady Gaga’s VMA looks — blood, angel wings, lace body stockings, bloody undies, and all.lady gaga vma fashionGaga arrived on the VMA carp

You could, however, see straight through to her nips.Gaga performs “Paparazzi” and she totally phones it in. Zzz. This chick’s like watching paint dry… JUST KIDDING. She rocked the Radio City stage so hard she freaking BLED TO DEATH! Side note, these are some of the most bad-ass performance photos since Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire. Here, let’s take a closer look at Gaga’s bloody show.

If you’re keeping track, the outfit she wore to her after party at Avenue was at least the sixth outfit Lady Gaga wore on VMA night. Was it an homage to the white wedding attire Madonna wore at the very first VMAs in 1984?
Pakistan’s First Women’s Band

MUMBAI: Zeb and Haniya, Pakistan’s first all-women rock band, are as far removed from the rock musician stereotype as sunlight from strobes. The Lahore-based duo, originally from the North West Frontier Province, missed the opportunity to perform at an event in Chennai just after the 26/11 terror attacks.
‘‘Our visas expire in November,’’ says Haniya, who plays the acoustic guitar. ‘‘So despite being down with flu, we decided to come to India. I’ve been to Mumbai in the past but it is Zeb’s first visit.’’
The band is in India to perform and do a spot of networking. The duo, whose first album is called ‘Chup’, will also meet Louis Banks in Mumbai.
‘‘If things work out, we will come back to India, and if people like our music, we will keep coming back,’’ says Haniya.
The last time India heard a female pop singer from across the border was, perhaps, the late Nazia Hasan who rocked the nation in the 1970s with ‘Baat Ban Jaaye’. But things have changed since then, especially in the last few years. Many regulars like Atif Aslam and Shafqat Ammanat Ali have cut down on their visits to India after the terror attacks, while there has been resistance in certain quarters of the music industry to Pakistani artistes living and working in India.

Zeb and Haniya, however, are unfazed. ‘‘This opposition from the Indian music industry has certainly slowed down the business of Pakistani artistes, but music is something that has no boundaries,’’ declares Haniya. ‘‘And if people like our music we will certainly come back to India.’’
The women may be Pakistan’s first female band but they will certainly not be seen wearing T-shirt and jeans while performing on stage. ‘‘I normally wear a salwar kameez, but Haniya wears a kurta and jeans,’’ says Zeb. Haniya recalls a moment on stage much before they started their own band, when the public hooted at her.
‘‘We were at a friend’s performance — she insisted that I go up on stage,’’ she says. ‘‘I was in a salwar kameez, and the moment I went up, the public started screaming, ‘Aunty, get off the stage.’ But after I started playing the guitar and singing, they all fell silent. By the end of it they were shouting, ‘Aunty, we love you!’’
