GALLE: Chris Gayle and Adrian Barath posted only the second century opening partnership for West Indies in the last four years to give the visitors a solid start in the first cricket test against Sri Lanka on Monday.
The pair put on 110 runs after Darren Sammy had won the toss on his debut as test captain and decided to bat first on a flat track.
Despite being beaten occasionally by new ball bowlers Thilan Thushara and Dammika Prasad, the opening pair mixed caution with bouts of aggression to run up the century stand in the 23rd over.
Gayle, playing rather circumspectly, reached his half-century off 61 balls by slog-sweeping spinner Suraj Randiv for his eighth four. He also had two sixes in his knock.
Barath, who was dropped at 35 by Randiv off a head-high return catch, followed his senior partner by bringing up his half-century off 82 balls, also

Each Lincoln Marathon brings with it thousands of stories.
This one, from the 2009 race, is especially good.
Whitney Masat was hurting. She’d been thinking about passing out for the last four miles of her half-marathon run — she even stayed near the grass so she’d have a soft landing if she fell. Somehow, she pushed herself to the final stretch.
“I remember seeing the finish line, and there were two clocks, one on the left side, one on the right,” she said. She looked at the one on her left.
On her right, her tuxedoed high-school sweetheart Jeff Bernecker stood with roses in hand, ring in pocket and a pretty big question for Whitney. Next to him, eight of his nieces and nephews were holding “Will” “You” “Marry” “Me” “Whitney” signs.
“People were saying, ‘Here she comes, here she comes,’” Jeff said. “Then I’m like, ‘Oh no, she doesn’t see me.’”
Whitney doesn’t remember much: “I don’t remember falling.”
The instant her foot hit the finish, she toppled over.
“The whole crowd,” Jeff said, “they just went ‘Ohhhh!’”
She was taken to the med tent and given fluids. They told her her blood pressure was 183/100 (“Oh my gosh, am I OK?” she asked).
She was OK. But Jeff was still waiting outside the tent, his question unanswered. All of their family and friends were there, too, knowing Jeff was going to pop the question.
She eventually came out of the tent, dazed. She still didn’t see the proposal. Finally, someone told her to turn around.
“I was trying to read the signs,” Whitney said. “And I was like, ‘Marry’? I didn’t really know what was happening.”
Jeff got down on one knee.
She passed out again, but not before giving him a “Yes.”
It’s been a year since that “yes.” And, yes, the “yes” was a real “yes.” The engagement’s still on.
Jeff and Whitney are getting married in August. The 23-year-olds from Plainview have lived across the street from each other since fourth grade. They’ve been dating for the past eight years.
“A lot of my friends, they tell me, ‘Thanks a lot, way to set the standard so high (for proposals),’” Jeff said.
The bar was already pretty high for Jeff’s family. His brothers-in-law and brothers are always trying to top one another. One brother proposed during a college graduation ceremony.
“For me, this was the perfect proposal,” Whitney said. “Because this is my passion.”
Whitney’s always been a runner. She’s running the half again on Sunday, making this her fourth Lincoln Marathon. Her goal is to run in a marathon in all 50 states, a goal she’ll tackle as soon as she’s done with nursing school and, you know, this getting-married thing.
Running is as big a part of Jeff’s life as it is hers. He’s her biggest fan, her one-man pit crew. He’ll get her water and goo packs. He’ll jog alongside her a bit during races, offering little nuggets of motivation. He’s been there for her at the start, finish and in between of every race she’s run.
Except, funny enough, on the day he proposed to her. He was supposed to be at mile 9 to give her a little boost of energy, water, a goo pack. Passing the 9-mile mark, Whitney couldn’t find Jeff anywhere.

From the Album: The Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack
The Nightmare Before Christmas Lyrics.
Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack features 10 ghoulishly delightful songs and score by renowned composer/songwriter Danny Elfman, lead singer of the popular rock group Oingo Boingo. Embracing the traditional musical structure of 10 songs and underscore, Elfman creates a musical landscape in which the story narrative is wholly integrated into each musical number. Allowing the film’s fantastic characters to come convincingly to life, the songs set into “stop-motion” the fanciful tale of Jack Skellington with haunting melodies, vivid imagery, and spectacular wordplay. Supported by an evocative and suspenseful underscore, the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack is a dazzling marriage of music and innovative technique. The film’s production numbers include: “This Is Halloween,” the song that introduces the storyline; “Jack’s Lament,” in which Jack expresses his frustration with his life; “What’s This?,” Jack’s exuberant testimonial to Christmastown; “Town Meeting Song,” which introduces the denizens of Halloweentown; “Jack’s Obsession,” in which Jack realizes his newfound desire for Christmas; “Kidnap the Sandy Claws,” which unveils Lock, Shock, and Barrel’s plan to abduct Santa Claus; “Making Christmas,” Halloweentown’s off-kilter impression of Christmas; “Sally’s Song,” a tender ballad of unrequited love; “Oogie Boogie’s Song,” the evil demon’s gloriously ghoulish tribute to himself; “Poor Jack,” a song of self-awakening, in which Jack discovers he truly belongs in Halloweentown; and the finale reprise performed by Jack, Sally, and the citizens of Halloweentown.
