Rani’s smoking act in No One Killed Jessica promo creates controversy
Remember how Aishwarya got the heat for the poster of her latest film Guzaarish because it showed her smoking? It was thought to be irresponsible as youth of today are easily impressed with stars. Well, the next in line is Rani Mukherjee.
Her upcoming film No One Killed Jessica is garnering publicity not just because of the trailer, that certainly makes you sit up and take notice, but more so because the promos show her smoking. It’s strange because this isn’t the first time Rani has smoked in a film; she did it before in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag where she played an elite escort.
In this film, Rani plays a headstrong journalist who takes up the cause of the murdered Jessica Lal. As part of her character specification, she had to smoke on a few occasions. NGOs though aren’t interested in the creative aspect of the character and letters have been sent to the Health Ministry and censor board asking for the deletion of scenes involving the actress smoking.
Rani’s character also shows her using profanity on screen in both English and Hindi in the promos. We wonder if that too would be deleted. The director of No One Killed Jessica maintains that these days using abuses in everyday conversations has become a norm and should be considered harmless. Well, that’s yet to be seen.

GENEVA: The World Health Organisation said on Tuesday that more cases of cholera would be found linked to the sudden epidemic in Haiti but ruled out the need for travel restrictions.

Haiti’s health ministry has confirmed 3,342 cases.
The UN Organisation for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the neighbouring Dominican Republic had mobilised a contingency plan in the border area, “partly closing” four crossing points to those without passports.
“There is no need to close the borders or restrict travel or trade because

BISHKEK: Riots in south Kyrgyzstan killed at least 26 people and injured more than 140, officials said on Friday, as fears grew of a new cycle of violence in the Central Asian nation.
Witnesses in Osh, the country”s second-largest city, reported hearing sustained gunfire late on Thursday and early on Friday. Local media also reported that gangs of young men armed with sticks and stones smashed shop windows and set cars alight in the center. Several buildings across the city were on fire.
Health Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Bailinova said many of the injured were being treated for stabbing and gunshot wounds. Officials said 29 were in serious condition.
It is unclear what caused the latest round of unrest. Interim President Roza Otunbayeva said the clashes appeared to have sparked off by a local conflict. Local Kyrgyz media reported that a brawl broke out late on Thursday evening on the city”s main thoroughfare.
Interim authorities swiftly declared a state of emergency in the city and dispatched armored vehicles and troops there in a bid to pacify the situation. But local residents said shooting continued into the morning and helicopters were flying low overhead. City officials said soldiers were posted across Osh and at the entrances to the city.
Kyrgyzstan has been enjoying an uneasy calm since a mass revolt in April led to the overthrow of then-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

Ethnic clashes in south Kyrgyzstan leave 37 dead
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan — Thirty-seven people have been killed and more than 500 wounded during ethnic violence in southern Kyrgyzstan, a health ministry spokesman told AFP on Friday.

“Thirty-seven people have now died,” as a result of the ongoing violence in the southern city of Osh, a health ministry spokesman said.
Kyrgyzstan’s provisional government led by Roza Otunbayeva has struggled to impose order on the volatile Central Asian state since seizing control during riots that ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev earlier this year.
Witnesses said brawls had broken out between ethnic Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbek groups in Osh, once the stronghold of Bakiyev.
