RAWALPINDI: An Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) Saturday had statements of three more witnesses recorded and later adjourned the hearing till April 2.

Judge of the special court, Raja Akhlaq heard the case of accused Mumtaz Qadri in Adiala Jail.

During the trial, statements of three policemen were recorded.

Umer Farooq, the policeman who served as Duty Head Mohrar in his statement recorded by the court said Mumtaz Qadri was made part of Governor Punjab’s security detail on his (Qadri’s) insistence.

SC adjourns hearing of Balochistan killings till March 2

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned hearing of a petition filed regarding Balochistan’s targeted killings and other crimes till March 2.

A three member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry , heard the case. Home secretary and I.G Balochistan presented report regarding deteriorating situation of law and order in the province.

The chief justice said in his remarks that if the governor, chief minister, I.G and chief secretaries are not safe, then who will be safe!

The court suggested attorney general to meet the prime minister and tell him the real and full story of Balochistan and keep his comments in the record of the court. TrendPK

PCO case: Judges established institution within institution

The Supreme Court in its remarks in the contempt of court case against PCO judges said that PCO judges established institution within institution with the help of dictator. While SM Zafar said that judge itself is a court and it cannot be issued contempt of court notice.

A four-member bench under the supervision of Justice Shahid Siddiqi heard the case against PCO judges. In his remarks, Justice Shahid Siddiqi said that the dictator issued an order which was not approved by the Parliament but the judges supported the dictator. He said that institution within institution cannot be set up. The hearing of the case would be held tomorrow again.

Govt. withdrawing NAB ordinance: AG

Attorney General Maulvi Anwar Ul Haq has said that the government is withdrawing the NAB amendment ordinance, trendpk.Com reported on Thursday.

On the other hand Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has ordered that no one should benefit from the ordinance while the withdrawal notice should be produced in the court by 7th December this year.

A three-member bench heard the case of NAB ordinance. The bench was led by the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Attorney General of Pakistan told the court that the government has decided in principle to withdraw the notice. The hearing of the said case was adjourned till 7th December, 2010.

PSM corruption case: Annoyed CJP declines to suspend probe

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the case of the alleged corruption in Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), trendpk.Com reported on Thursday.

The counsel, Fakhrudding G Ibrahim, pleaded the Supreme Court to halt the hearing of the case because Pakistan Steels is facing rupees one billions loss every month.

He contended that the investigation has dropped the production to 40 percent. He added that even the Scotland Yard has failed to stop such white-collar crime.Rejecting Fakharuddins request for calling off the investigation, the CJ maintained that Rs 26 billion had been embezzled, The SC took notice of the issue because nobody dared to held the influential responsible.

Chief Justice deplored that FIA, instead of nabbing the true criminal held a watchman and a canteen owner for billions of rupees corruption. The CJ ordered DG FIA to submit a comprehensive report in this regard in the court.

The court has been deferred for a month.

SC Dismisses Plea to Stop Steel Mills Graft Probe

ISLAMABAD, News Trends: Supreme Court (SC) dismissed plea filed here in order to plead the court to stall the investigations into Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) corruption worth billions of rupees.

A three-member bench headed by the CJP Chaudhry heard the case regarding the PSM corruption. Also Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) chief Wasim Akhtar was present during the hearing.

FG Ibrahim submitted that the FIA investigations into the Mills corruption is causing loss to the PSM; accordingly, this process should be stanched.

NATO containers case: SC orders customs officials to submit report

On presenting of evidences by Director Dunya News Dr. Moeed Pirzada about evasion of customs duty by NATO containers, the Supreme Court has ordered customs officials to submit details of the matter within 24 hours. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Ch. said that it was a national service to get back theft money and deposit in the treasury.
Three-member bench of the Supreme Court led by the CJP heard the case of smuggling and tax evasion by 11,000 NATO containers. Dr. Moeed Pirzada who appeared in the court for assistance presented the evidences and told that customs intelligence didnt complete the investigation because customs officials refused to give details to the customs intelligence during the investigation.
The court was also presented such computer record which made it clear that all containers bound for Afghanistan never reached the country and Pakistan suffered huge losses due to customs duty theft. The court has asked the member customs Muneer Qureshi to submit written reply on customs intelligence report within 24 hours.

Courts have no sympathies with criminals: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Friday said courts have no sympathies with criminals and a case be built against any suspect apprehended in the course of investigation into incidents of terrorism.

A three-judge bench, headed by the Chief Justice, heard the case of suo motto notice taken in connection with recovery of Hassan Sharjeel – missing son of Islamabad based journalist Shakeel Turrabi.

IG Islamabad told the court that father of the missing son has received a letter which says that Hassan Sharjeel is in Khost area of Afghanistan and is safe. The Chief Justice in his remarks said these ‘police tactics’ are aimed at diverting attention from the main issue.

The IG said a lead has been found during investigation into the act of terrorism in Rawalpindi Parade Lane Mosque that also indicates link with Hassan Sharjeel.

The Chief Justice on this said unfortunately such acts of terrorism have become a frequent occurrence and stressed upon production of evidence in case there is any culprit for building a case.

Later, the hearing was adjourned till January 9.

BoP scam seems to be worth far beyond Rs9b: CJ

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) sought reply from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the proposal regarding giving the investigations into Bank of Punjab scandal to the former chief of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Tariq Khosa, Geo News reported Thursday.

The court said in its remarks that the loan scandal is not worth just Rs9 billion; it is worth far beyond the mentioned amount.

A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday heard the case.

As the hearing began, the apex court scolded Hamesh Khan’s counsel Mehmood Sheikh for giving media statements regarding the case.

The CJ said in his remarks that Tariq Khosa, the former DG FIA could be made to lead the team investigating the case. The court demanded the NAB Chairman to submit his reply in this connection.

On an occasion, the CJ Chaudhry said the Law Minister also was implicated in the loan scandal and name of Finance Secretary Salman Siddique also appeared in the newspapers on the same count; accordingly, the matter needed to be taken seriously.

The CJP urged the investigations to be so transparent that no one has any chance to furrow the doubtful brows over them.

A significant development was achieved when a plea was filed pleading the court that State Minister Raees Muneer in era of Former President Gen (rtd) Pervez Musharraf borrowed Rs120 million from the BoP.
