GUATEMALA CITY: The toll from the heaviest rains in living memory in Guatemala and Mexico rose above 50, as Guatemalan officials called off the search for 15 more corpses over safety fears.

Mexican authorities said three workers cleaning a drainage system in the center of the country had been buried by rocks and mud dislodged from a nearby hill, taking the toll there to at least seven after a week of downpours.

In Guatemala, where at least 45 people died over the weekend, rescuers had just resumed the grim task of digging for bodies in a ravine next to the Pan-American Highway when officials decided the sodden terrain was unsafe.

“The search has been called off because of the condition of the ground,” said David de Leon, a spokesman for the government’s emergency management office CONRED.

Afghan offensive in Kandahar to begin in June: US

WASHINGTON: NATO forces will begin their offensive on the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar in June, a US official said late Monday.

The offensive “has already begun but clearing operations will begin (in June),” the official said on condition of anonymity.

NATO and US forces had already announced plans to begin Kandahar operations this summer, but without giving specific dates.

Coalition forces have already launched a major offensive against the Taliban in Helmand province, near Kandahar, in an attempt to regain ground against the fierce insurgency.

The United States and NATO are boosting their military effort to 150,000 troops in Afghanistan in coming months as efforts to eradicate the Taliban threat intensify, with concentration on the militants” southern strongholds.

US General Stanley McChrystal said earlier this month he would take on Taliban militants in their Kandahar strongholds this summer when enough reinforcements are on the ground.

McChrystal, the US war commander, told President Barack Obama by video conference at a war cabinet meeting that the military was on course to pour thousands of extra troops into Afghanistan in the coming months, while he reported “continued progress” in the offensive against the Taliban in Marjah.

A US combat brigade of 4,000 men was already deployed in Kandahar in the summer of 2009 to secure lines of communication leading to the capital of southern Afghanistan, historic stronghold of the Taliban movement.

OTTAWA: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said China will play a role in international efforts to pen sanctions against Iran at the United Nations, and that Beijing recognizes the threat of Iran”s nuclear program.

“I think as the weeks go forward and we begin the hard work of trying to come up with a Security Council resolution, China will be involved,” Clinton said Monday in an interview with Canadian television.

“China is part of the consultative group that has been unified all along the way, which has made it very clear that a nuclear-armed Iran is not acceptable to the international community,” she said.

GAZA CITY: Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager near the southern Gaza border town of Rafah on Tuesday, Palestinian medics said.

Muawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services, said Mohammed al-Faramawi, 15, was shot dead close to Gaza”s defunct airport, without giving further details.

The Israeli military would not immediately comment on the report.

Gaza”s borders had been mostly quiet since a massive 22-day Israeli offensive against the territory”s Islamist Hamas rulers ended in January 2009.

But two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinians were killed last weekend in Gaza in the heaviest clashes since the end of the war, and several rockets have been fired by Palestinian militants in past weeks.

8dd604f147ontest Thailand Holds Miss Jumbo Queen ContestAYUTTHAYA: A Thai Beauty contest held Sunday gave women with a little more meat on their bones the chance to strut their stuff and compete for the title of Miss Jumbo Queen.

The annual pageant aims to raise awareness and money for Thailand’s suffering elephant population. Women weighing 176 pounds and over strut their stuff for judges in beauty and talent competitions – fully representing the theory that “bigger is beautiful.”

“I want to show people that just because I’m fat doesn’t mean I’m any less beautiful or talented,” said 18-year-old winner, Tarnrarin Chansawang, who weighed in at 242 pounds.

This year, 24 women participated in the contest at the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo, 38 miles west of the capital Bangkok.

As winner of the Miss Jumbo Queen crown, Tarnrarin took home several prizes, including a jumbo trophy and $50,000 baht ($1,270).

In keeping with Jumbo tradition, a side award for Miss Jumbo Universe went to university student Thanchanok Mekkeaw for weighing in as the heaviest competitor in the pageant at 400 pounds.
