Crush of red: City says 2 million fans rally for Hawks Fireworks erupted as Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews hoisted the Stanley Cup before a crush of flag-waving, fist-pumping fans pegged by the city at 2 million.
“You guys are the greatest,” he told the screaming sea of red. “Thank you very much.”
Winger Patrick Kane led the crowd with the chant of “Chicagoooo,” holding on to the last note. “Let me hear you,” Kane said. “I can’t hear you.”
Kane called his teammates “the best guys in the world” and said the rally at Michigan and Wacker was the “best moment” of his life.
Before he made way for Toews, Kane quipped: “For all the cab drivers out there, I love you.”
The city’s Mayor’s Office of Special Events and the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications estimated the crowd at the rally and along the parade at around 2 million.Chants of “Let’s go Hawks! Let’s go Hawks” echoed down Michigan Avenue as the red parade buses carrying the Blackhawks rolled toward the stage.
Toews rode in the last double-decker bus, hoisting the Stanley Cup to a constant chorus of whoops and squeals as confetti rained down.
Those closest to the stage had been there for at least six hours, forgoing water and bathroom breaks for a chance to be close to the Stanley Cup.
“It means everything to me,” said Rodolfo Frias of Chicago. “History is being made and I’ve got a front row seat to it.”
When the last of the buses passed, crowds along the route poured into the street and followed, screaming and waving large Blackhawks flags. Police officers on horses lined up in front of them to keep them at a distance from the buses. Police barriers also lined Michigan Avenue

LOS ANGELES – The NCAA threw the book at storied Southern California on Thursday with a two-year bowl ban, four years’ probation, loss of scholarships and forfeits of an entire year’s games for improper benefits to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush dating to the Trojans’ 2004 national championship.
USC was penalized for a lack of institutional control in the ruling by the NCAA following its four-year investigation. The report cited numerous improper benefits for Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo, who spent just one year with the Trojans.
The coaches who presided over the alleged misdeeds — football’s Pete Carroll and basketball’s Tim Floyd — left USC in the past year. USC reacted with uniform outrage to the harshness of the sanctions, promising an appeal. I’m absolutely shocked and disappointed in the findings of the NCAA,” Carroll said in a video statement produced by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, who hired him in January. “I never thought it would come to this.”
The penalties include the loss of 30 football scholarships over three years and vacating 14 victories in which Bush played from December 2004 through the 2005 season. USC beat Oklahoma in the BCS title game on Jan. 4, 2005, and won 12 games during Bush’s Heisman-winning 2005 season, which ended with a loss to Texas in the 2006 BCS title game.
Bill Hancock, the executive director of the BCS, said a committee will meet to consider vacating USC’s 2004 championship. While no action would go into effect until USC’s appeals are heard by the NCAA, Hancock said there would be no 2004 champion if USC’s victory is vacated.
“I take the same stance as our university,” new football coach Lane Kiffin said. “There is some guilt, but the punishment is too severe. That’s why the appeal process is taking place.”

He’ll be on the visiting sideline.
The Denver Broncos, who chose the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner with the 25th selection overall of the NFL draft on Thursday night, will visit the Jaguars on Sept. 12 on the opening week of the NFL’s regular season.
DRAFT TRACKER: Every pick, every team
ROUND 1 ANALYSIS: How picks fit for their new teams
And the Broncos paid a strong price to get Tebow, giving up a second, third and fourth round draft pick to move up.
“That will be exciting to be honest,” Tebow said of his pro career starting in the area he became a high school legend. “I’m just going to compete, go in there and get some playing time and just get better. Be part of a franchise and a great organization. That’s what I’m excited about.”
Tebow said he wasn’t surprised Jacksonville passed on him.
“I had only met with them one time and it was an interview at the combine,” Tebow said.
“I hadn’t done a workout for them or had a visit. We hadn’t actually really talked to anybody from the Jaguars from the combine so I didn’t really think that they were that interested.”
Tebow chuckled when asked about his number coming available and said, “If they want me to wear 15, I’ll wear 15.”
That was Tebow’s uniform at UF and just came open when Denver star receiver Brandon Marshall departed for the Miami Dolphins.
A little after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, the hearts of Jaguars football fans collectively skipped a beat when the Buffalo Bills selected C.J. Spiller with the ninth pick of the NFL Draft. But Jacksonville, picking 10th, took Cal defensive tackle Tyson Alualu. Tebow would have been a reach. Alualu may have been just as far of a stretch, however, with the No. 10 selection.
But the Broncos new quarterback seemed thrilled where he landed. Denver has Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn already on the roster.
Tebow said he talked with Gators coach Urban Meyer almost right away and he called his mentor, “Excited.”
Tebow said Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, who called him with the news, was a great fit.
“I’m excited just to pick his brain and go out there and just start grinding,” Tebow said.
The former Florida quarterback said being selected in the first round wasn’t important, but having a team with faith in him was.

2009 Heisman Trophy Winner
2009 Heisman Trophy Winner, Mark Ingram of the University of Alabama was selected as the 75th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy as the Most Outstanding College Football Player in the United States for 2009. Ingram won the award over Toby Gerhart of Stanford by only 28 points in the closest finish in the 75 year history of the Heisman. Previously, the closest race was in 1985 when Bo Jackson defeated Chuck Long by just 45 points.
Michael Comerford, of the Heisman Trophy Trust, which annually presents the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award, announced the selection of Ingram on Saturday evening, December 12th, on a nationally televised ESPN sports special live from the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. The victory for the 5’10”, 215-pound Ingram marks the first time a member of the Crimson Tide has won the Heisman Trophy.
Ingram, of Flint, MI, has rushed 249 times for 1,542 yards (6.2 yards per carry) with 15 touchdowns while catching 30 passes for 322 yards and an additional 3 touchdowns. His rushing total established a single season record at Alabama. While leading the Crimson Tide to an undefeated (13-0) regular season and a No.1 National ranking, Ingram was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, Ingram led Alabama to a berth in the BCS Championship Game on January 7th against Texas where he will face off against fellow Heisman finalist, Colt McCoy.
Ballots were mailed to 870 media personnel across the nation plus 55 Heisman winners and one fan ballot, for a total of 926 electors. The ballots are received and tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP. Ingram polled 1,304 points to capture the award over Toby Gerhart of Stanford (1,276 points), Colt McCoy of Texas (1,145 points), Ndamukong Suh (815 points) and the 2007 Heisman winner, Tim Tebow of Florida (390 points). The point total is reached by a system of three points for a first place vote, two for a second and one for a third.
Mark Ingram will officially be honored at the 75th annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Award Dinner on Monday evening, December 14th at the Marriot Marquis in New York. For more information, contact Tim Henning at 212-425-7000.
