Chaos as India-Eng tickets go on sale
BANGALORE: Indian police baton-charged thousands of World Cup cricket fans queuing for tickets for India”s weekend clash with England amid scenes of chaos outside Bangalore stadium.
Several people on Thursday were injured and taken away on stretchers as police attempted to keep order as an estimated 5,000 people pushed and shoved in an unruly line that stretched around the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Sunday”s game was switched at the last-minute to Bangalore because of problems at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata where the match, one of the highlights of the early stages of the World Cup, had been due to be played.
A total of 7,000 tickets were on sale at the stadium on Thursday and sold out in several hours, a secretary at the state cricket association, Javagal Srinath, said.
People had begun queuing on Wednesday night and the crowd grew bigger on Thursday morning, leading to a huge crush when the half dozen counters opened on Thursday morning.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Singer R. Kelly said he hopes his new World Cup anthem can inspire people in much the same way as his signature song “I Believe I Can Fly.”
Kelly’s new “Sign of a Victory” has been declared the official anthem for the World Cup. The songwriter said in an interview on Wednesday that it carried a message of hope and triumph.
“It’s definitely no doubt a humanity song, and I’m hoping that everybody feels the same way when they hear it,” he said. “(I’m) hoping they can be as touched by it as I was when I heard it in my head.”
Working with the Soweto Spiritual Singers on the song was an “unbelievable” experience, he said.
It’s R. Kelly’s second trip to Africa. He toured the continent last year, overcoming his fear of flying.
“I always said, `I can’t get on the plane, I can’t get on the plane,’” he explained. “But when I finally did get up the nerve to get on the plane and come on over to Africa, the welcome was so unbelievably warm. It was just so touching that I couldn’t believe it.”That these evoked the spirit of “The Lion King” (a giant-sized dung beetle puppet in particular) was no surprise: the co-producer of the opening ceremony was Lebo M, known for his work as part of the creative team of both “The Lion King” movie and Broadway production.
In selecting the music performers for the ceremony, the producers were sensitive to the notion that whilst the 2010 FIFA World Cup is being staged in South Africa for the next month, it’s being billed as the first-ever African World Cup.

After the Lost finale was the Jimmy Kimmel Live special, Aloha to Lost, sending off the recently-concluded series into limbo. Several of the show’s stars popped by to recall their favorite moments of the show, with producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse presenting three alternate endings, and Kimmel getting a chance to poke fun at that.
That’s done now, and I don’t know what to make of it either.
Honestly, though, it’s hard to squeeze in six seasons worth of fond memories into an hour-long show. So, while we get some interesting bits from some members of the cast–Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, Michael Emerson and Emilie de Ravin were on the show, among others–it mostly seemed like an underwhelming send-off. But maybe that is the point.
With that said, here are the highlights of Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost. Trust me, I tried squeezing things out.
Matthew Fox on the show’s ending: “What’s beautiful is that there’s room for interpretation depending on their spiritual beliefs.”
Michael Emerson on talk that he and Terry O’Quinn are hoping to work together again after Lost: “We try to think that kind of double-act we can do later in life, but once in a while we have a half-clever idea that we’re pitching around in street corners.”

Zimmerman leads Nats over Phils
PHILADELPHIA — Pinch-hitter Ryan Zimmerman hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Danys Baez in the eighth inning and the Washington Nationals rallied for a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.
Adam Dunn also connected for the Nationals, who stopped Philadelphia’s five-game winning streak.
Chase Utley hit his fourth homer in three games and Shane Victorino also went deep for the Phillies.
On Jackie Robinson Day in the majors — all players wore No. 42 — the Phillies received their 2009 NL championship rings before the game. Philadelphia fell two wins short of repeating as World Series champs last year, losing to the New York Yankees.
The Phillies are trying to become the first NL team in 66 years to win three straight pennants. They’re off to a 7-2 start.

DENVER — Mike Pelfrey pitched seven solid innings and hit an RBI single, helping New York beat Colorado to avert a series sweep.
Pelfrey (2-0) allowed five hits, struck out six and walked none as the Mets ended a four-game skid. Only two of the Rockies’ hits got out of the infield.
Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez each pitched a hitless inning to finish New York’s first shutout of the season.
Astros 5, Cardinals 1
ST. LOUIS — Houston avoided matching the worst start in franchise history, stopping an eight-game losing streak with its first win.
The Astros were the only winless team left in the majors and came close to tying the team’s 0-9 start in 1983.
Bud Norris (1-0) struck out a career-high nine and held the Cardinals without an earned run for five innings. He also got his first career RBI to put the Astros ahead.

CHICAGO — Rickie Weeks hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and Ryan Braun and Casey McGehee each homered and drove in three runs, leading Milwaukee to victory.
The Brewers overcame home runs by Derrek Lee, Marlon Byrd and Aramis Ramirez to avoid a sweep in the three-game series.
Braves 6, Padres 2
SAN DIEGO — Jason Heyward drove in two runs on a pair of doubles and Martin Prado homered to help Atlanta take two of three from San Diego.
Leading 3-2, the Braves gave themselves a cushion with three straight run-scoring hits with two outs in the eighth. Yunel Escobar singled, Heyward doubled into the left-center gap and pinch-hitter Eric Hinske singled.

MIAMI — Jorge Cantu extended his major league season-opening record to 10 games with a hit and an RBI, Josh Johnson struck out 10 in six innings of easy work and Florida salvaged a four-game series split by beating Cincinnati.
Cody Ross was 3 for 5 with two doubles and three RBI for the Marlins, who led 8-1 after five innings. Cameron Maybin hit his first home run of the season for Florida, part of a three-hit night, and Dan Uggla finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi was grilled for eight hours over the financial dealings and share holding patterns of IPL. The grilling which started yesterday evening continued till early morning today at his Worli-based office.
I-T officials raided IPL Head-Quarters at Wankhede Stadium. Another team of I-T official questioned Modi at Nirlon House in upmarket Worli from 7.15 pm to 3.20 am.
Modi said,”They were given documentation details, they verified the documents and went through the entire process of bidding. We fully cooperated with them and provided them with all they required.”

Sonja Morgan Aims to “Commercialize” Herself on The Real Housewives of New York City
When asked by Entertainment Weekly why she’s appearing on The Real Housewives of New York City (Morgan debuts tonight), the socialite replied:
“I’m on the show to have a good time and commercialize myself… I’ve been writing my screenplay since the minute my divorce started. It’s very sexy, sort of like a Candace Bushnell society novel.”
Somewhere in a meeting with her agent, ignoring her children Kate Gosselin is shaking her head and wondering why a single mother on a reality show isn’t using that platform to exploit her kids for sympathy, money and attention.
But back to Morgan. What is her life experience? Will she mix it up with her co-stars? We’ve excerpted a few responses from her aforementioned magazine interview:
What’s her resume? I’ve been working my whole life, started at 14 years old put myself through college, and then I was modeling in Europe, doing the restaurant business, and brokering deals. Then I got married, had a baby. Then I produced a movie, then I produced an art show and produced an art tour. I said, “You know, I think it’s time to highlight my career.”
Will she catfight? It’s not my M.O. I love to gossip like anyone else but I definitely don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings. I don’t have a mean bone in my body. I can be very gossipy and fakey like any woman is, and I hope I can keep my composure around the ladies.
What is she like? I don’t want to be cliché and say don’t judge a book by its cover, but there are many layers to me. I’m very down to earth and a good mom. I do my own gardening and floral arrangements and cooking. I’m much more down to earth than you would realize.
