PCB to hold Five T20 festival matches before World Cup
LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to organise five Twenty20 festival matches before the T20 World Cup while the Pentangular One-day Cricket Tournament will be starting from April 17.
Talking with media here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, chief selector Mohsin Khan said that these festival matches would be played at Hyderabad, Multan, Faisalabad, Abbottabad and Islamabad while the one-day Pentangular Cup would be held from April 17.
He said that all players of the Pakistan team would take part in these matches from which they would get an opportunity of good practice.
Jakhrani refuses to act against PHF officials
ISLAMABAD: Federal Sports Minister Ejaz Jakhrani has said that national team had showed a satisfactory performance before the Hockey World Cup.
Speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly, he said that office bearers of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) were elected; therefore, action could not be initiated against them.
However, Jakhrani said that investigation was underway about team’s dismal performance in the mega event.
It may be reminded Pakistan finished last in the 12-nation tournament played in India.
He said some 710 athletes had participated in different domestic and international sports events during the last two years at the cost of Rs6.55 million.
Resignations Of The National Hockey Team Turned Out To Be Temporary
Following the poorest performance in Hockey World Cup the resignations of the national hockey team turned out to be temporary and five days after the retirement the players took back their resignations. Captain Zeeshan Asharf however maintained that he would make his decision on return from India.
Federal Sports Minister Ejaz Jakhrani has directed the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) not to accept the resignations submitted by the entire hockey team following their dismal performance in FIH World Cup. The federal minister met with the team, which finished last in the 12-nation tournament.
Later, Jakhrani told media that players could not perform better due to bad luck and the fatigue after playing constant hockey ahead of the World Cup.
Jakhrani made no comments on Asif Bajwa’s case. He added that “We will have to work together to save the hockey in Pakistan, he said, adding that former players will also be consulted in this regard.”

G-Tech and NC State will meet in the other semifinals game on Saturday. If you’re keeping count, the #2, 3 and 4 seeds were all upset on Friday, making for an interesting mix of teams heading into the next round.
The winners of Saturday’s two semifinal games will meet in Sunday’s ACC Tournament finals to determine this year’s champion. What will the final ACC Tournament results 2010 be? Will Duke reign supreme again or will another team pull off the big upset?
Germany To Face Australia In Hockey WC Final Today
Defending champions Germany will face Australia in the final of Hockey World Cup 2010 today.
Germany outplayed England 4-1 and Australia posted a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the semi-finals at Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Dehli. England and Netherlands will play their match for 3rd position.
Pakistan after disgraceful performance in the world cup even did not manage to secure 11th spot. The national team will return back to the country today.
Rodney Stuckey
Rodney Stuckey, Detroit’s Rodney Stuckey was conscious and breathing on his own as he was taken to a hospital after collapsing on the Pistons’ bench during a game Friday night.
The Pistons said Stuckey was taken to the Cleveland Clinic and his vital signs were stable, but was going for further testing and observation.
Stuckey was wheeled off the court on a stretcher during the third quarter after he collapsed into a trainer’s arms on the bench during the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Stuckey walked off the floor for a timeout showing no signs of illness. After a few moments in a chair, though, Stuckey slumped over.
Medical personnel rushed over to the Pistons’ bench with a stretcher. Play was halted for 12 minutes as the medical staff worked on Stuckey, placed an oxygen mask on his face and wheeled him into an ambulance.
Cleveland players huddled together with their heads bowed, while Pistons teammate Tayshaun Prince sat silent in his chair a few feet away as Stuckey was being treated.
Dutch, Germans And Kiwis Get Closer To The Semis
The sixth day of the Hockey World Cup, New Zealand defeated South Korea 2-1 while Netherlands defeated Canada 6-0. Defending champion Germany also inched closer to the semi’s after defeating Argentina 4-3.
New Zealand managed to survive numerous South Korean attacks before pulling off a 2-1 upset victory to keep alive their semifinal hopes. Hot favorite team for the title Netherlands pumped in six goals in the second half to a weak Canadian side and virtually booked a place for the semifinal. Defending Champions Germany had to work hard to beat Argentina although in the end Germany scraped past a plucky Argentina 4-3 to brighten their chances for a semifinal slot.
Pakistan Beaten By England In Hockey World Cup2-5
England defeats Pakistan 5-2 in hockey World Cup and has virtually qualified to the semifinal stage of the tournament. Pakistan was in a deficit of 2-0 during the first half. India was defeated by Spain 5-2.
During the second half the Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt scored in a four-minute span to level the game. English strikers attacked the Pakistani several times and in the process managed to score three more goals. Barry Middleton and Jonty Clarke scored twice while Ashley Jackson scored one goal for England.
Sohail Abbas yet again failed to gain advantage of penalty corners. Pakistan was awarded four penalty strokes but Sohail managed to score on none. The goal keeper Ali Akbar failed to exhibit impressive performance.
Earlier, Australia achieved the biggest win in World Cup history by hammering South Africa 12-0. It was Australia’s second win in three matches.
