Chinas inflation rate hits 4.5 percent in January
China s annual inflation rate hit 4.5 percent in January, the highest level in three months, data showed Thursday, after consumers splashed out on food and gifts over the Lunar New Year holiday.
The country s consumer price index, a key gauge of inflation, was higher than the 4.1 percent in December and ended five straight months of easing price pressures caused by government restrictions on lending and property purchases.
Analysts said the holiday, also known as the Spring Festival, was unusually early this year and had distorted the monthly data.
Retail spending typically soars during the week-long festival, the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar, as consumers ramp up spending on food, wine and gifts for family and friends.
Before January, inflation had eased for five months in a row after hitting a more than three-year high of 6.5 percent in July and analysts said the downward trend would likely resume in February as the economy continued to slow.
“It was inevitable that we would see some impact of the Lunar New Year holidays, which were in January this year but February last year, but it seems that this impact was bigger than expected,” said Brian Jackson, a senior analyst at Royal Bank of Canada in Hong Kong.
Analysts had expected inflation to rise 4.1 percent, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey.
The market barely reacted to the data, with the Shanghai Composite Index up 0.37 points, or 0.02 percent, at 2,347.90 in late morning trade.
The rebound in inflation was driven by food prices, which soared 10.5 percent year-on-year in January compared with 9.1 percent in December, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement.
The producer price index, which measures the cost of goods at the farm and factory gate, rose an anaemic 0.7 percent in January compared with 1.7 percent in December, the statement said.
Bank of America-Merrill Lynch economist Lu Ting said the data was “significantly distorted” by the holiday “so investors definitely should not read too much into the inflation”.
There is mounting evidence that China s growth is slowing as the ongoing debt crisis in Europe and weakness in the United States hurts demand for Chinese exports, a key driver of the world s second-largest economy.
The International Monetary Fund this week warned that an escalation of Europe s fiscal woes could slash China s economic growth by half this year, and it urged Beijing to prepare stimulus measures in response.
But Chinese leaders have been very cautious about opening the credit valves for fear of reigniting inflation, which has the historic potential to trigger social unrest in the country of more than 1.3 billion people.
Late last year the central bank eased lending restrictions on banks and analysts expect similar moves in the coming months as authorities try to spur economic activity and prevent a damaging collapse in the property market.
Policymakers are also easing taxes and improving funding channels for small and medium-sized businesses which are huge employers but are often shunned by the major banks.
“There remains plenty of downward momentum in China, despite a moderation in the slowdown,” said Alistair Thornton, a Beijing-based analyst for IHS Global Insight.
“The property market remains in the throes of a correction, which is dragging down investment spending and spreading deflationary pressure (and) the eurozone will act as a drag on export growth this year.”
Asia stocks plummet on slower world growth
Asian stock markets fell Monday, with slower-than-expected growth in the US and uncertainty about a tentative deal to resolve Greece s debt crisis weighing on investor sentiment.
Japan s Nikkei 225 index fell 0.6 percent to 8,785.22. South Korea s Kospi was 1.2 percent lower at 1,940.82 and Hong Kong s Hang Seng dropped 0.5 percent to 20,401.32. Australia s S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.4 percent at 4,272.40.
Benchmarks in Singapore and the Philippines also fell. Shares in mainland China were mixed after being closed for a week for Chinese New Year holidays. Taiwan and New Zealand rose.
European leaders were to meet later Monday in Brussels to discuss austerity and belt-tightening measures as well as a tentative deal reached Saturday between Greece and its private investors that could avert a disastrous Greek default on its debt.
If the deal holds and works, it will help prevent a potential shock to the world banking system. But it doesn t resolve the weakening economic conditions in Greece and other European nations as they rein in spending to get their debts under control.
Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said that “the Greece debt issues will remain a source of uncertainty and might dampen the risk mood ahead of the EU summit today.”
Under the agreement, investors holding 206 billion euros ($272 billion) in Greek bonds would exchange them for bonds with half the face value. The replacement bonds would have a longer maturity and pay a lower interest rate.
The deal would reduce Greece s annual interest expense from about 10 billion euros to about 4 billion euros. When the bonds mature, Greece would have to pay its bondholders only 103 billion euro.
It is unclear how investors who buy and sell the bonds of other debt-burdened countries, such as Italy, Spain and Portugal, will react. If they drive up borrowing costs for those countries, the debt crisis could get worse.
Private investors hold two-thirds of Greece s debt, which is equal to an unsustainable 160 percent of its annual economic output. By restructuring the debt, Greece hopes to make it a more manageable 120 percent by decade s end.
On Wall Street, stocks mostly fell Friday after the government said the U.S. economy grew more slowly than expected in the last three months of 2011.
Economic growth for October through December came in at an annual rate of 2.8 percent. That was the fastest of 2011 but lower than the 3 percent that economists were looking for.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.6 percent to 12,660.46. The Standard & Poor s 500 index fell 0.2 percent to 1,316.33. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.4 percent to 2,816.55.
Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 36 cents to $99.20 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 14 cents to end at $99.56 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.
In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3180 from $1.3208 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose slightly to 76.74 yen from 76.72 yen.

They’ll resume work in March for the show’s third season. “White Collar” returns to the USA Network schedule with part two of Season 2 on Jan. 18.
It wasn’t easy going back to work six-and-a-half weeks after giving birth, Thiessen admits. “I missed everyone, but I was not real excited about going back. It was definitely challenging. You’re kind of like a walking zombie, tired all the time. I’m nursing, so my mom would come to the set and take care of her while I was working. The show has been amazing. They gave me time whenever I had to nurse her. I’m really blessed to have had so much understanding and a lot of great help. I have to give credit where it’s due — I couldn’t have done it without help from my mom and my husband (actor Brady Smith).”
Right now, Thiessen’s attention is on Harper’s first Christmas and “all the things you’ve got to do — the cheesy photos with Santa, the Christmas tree,” she notes happily. The Smiths will spend “half our Christmas in California with my family, and half in Texas with his,” she adds.
There’s also Thiessen’s new entrepreneurial sideline: Petit Nest, the baby furnishings line, including, she says, “cribs, dressers, chairs, gliders, decorative art and things like bedding and linens.”
“When I was designing my own nursery … I realized there was not a lot out there that appealed to (my) tastes,” she says.
