UNITED NATIONS: The United Nation assured to continue aid efforts in flood-hit areas despite a US official warned that the Tehrik-e-Taliban in Pakistan is planning to attack foreign aid workers participating in flood relief.

“We will not be deterred from doing what we believe we need to do, which is to help the people of Pakistan,” John Holmes, the UN humanitarian chief, told a news conference at the world body’s headquarters.

“Of course, security issues are there, but we’ll continue to help a very large number affected by the unprecedented floods” Holmes, who is leaving his post, told a news briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

Holmes said that the United Nations would take “appropriate precautions.”

Replying to a question, Holmes said he had not talked to the Pakistan government about beefing up security for the UN aid workers, but the

ec66a6d5b0719358 conan obrienConan O’Brien is heading to TBS, where he’ll launch a late-night show in November.

O’Brien’s decision to go to TBS ends a long dance with the Fox Network, which had been in extensive negotiations with the late-night funnyman.

Once the new show gets off the ground, O’Brien will be paired with George Lopez’s late-night effort, which currently airs in the 11 p.m. slot, but will move to midnight when O’Brien’s show gets off the ground.

The network began talking with O’Brien last week, after Lopez called him to come aboard, according to the announcement.

“I can’t think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in,” Lopez said in a statement. “It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy.”

Said O’Brien in a statement: “In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly.”

The TBS deal is yet another chapter in a wacky world of late-night TV that began last spring when NBC replaced Jay Leno on the “Tonight Show” with O’Brien.
Leno was then given a 10 p.m. show on weeknights.

However, earlier this year, when each show struggled in the Nielsen department, NBC officials wanted to move Leno to 11:35 p.m., followed by O’Brien at 12:05 a.m.

O’Brien balked and decided to walk, taking with him a $45 million payout for himself and his staff.

O’Brien had been promised the “Tonight” gig five years earlier and vowed that moving the time period would be a destruction of the franchise.

Common wisdom was that he would head to Fox, which for years has tried to launch a late-night effort. However, to get that moving, Fox had to convince affiliates to give up lucrative syndicated fare in that time period to air O’Brien.

“Conan has been the comedic voice for a generation. TBS already has a huge audience of young comedy lovers, and Conan’s show will give these fans even more reasons to watch our network,” Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks said in a statement.

baaab8e490opez 5 george lopez Late-night mainstay Conan O’Brien is headed to TBS to resume his comedic duties with a talk show expected to debut in November, the network said Monday.

The program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS’ “Lopez Tonight,” starring George Lopez, to midnight.

O’Brien quickly fired out a celebratory tweet.

“The good news: I will be doing a show on TBS starting in November! The bad news: I’ll be playing Rudy on the all new Cosby Show,” he posted Monday on Twitter.

The surprise announcement hit the same day O’Brien starts a two-month, nationwide comedy tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.

Barring Fox, syndication was widely considered O’Brien’s most likely option. Few if anyone mentioned TBS as a plausible destination.

O’Brien began serious talks with TBS just last week, the network said.

“In three months, I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable,” O’Brien said in a tongue-in-cheek-toned statement. “My plan is working perfectly.”

O’Brien left NBC in January after hosting “The Tonight Show” for just eight months, as his ratings plunged from those of his longtime “Tonight” predecessor, Jay Leno, who reclaimed the hour. Until last June, O’Brien had followed Leno as host of “Late Night” since 1993.

After giving O’Brien “Tonight,” NBC sought to keep Leno on board with a prime-time show that quickly flopped. An attempt to move O’Brien to a post-midnight slot drew O’Brien’s ire, and he walked away with a $32 million settlement package.

Although that put him in play for other networks, the deal barred him from appearing on TV until September
