JAIPUR: India’s stand-in captain Gautam Gambhir cracked an unbeaten 138 off 116 balls to lift the hosts to an eight-wicket win over New Zealand in the second one-day international on Wednesday.
The left-hander’s eighth one-day century enabled India to surpass New Zealand’s challenging 258-8 with seven overs to spare in the day-night match at the Sawai Man Singh stadium in Jaipur.
The emphatic victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after the hosts had won the first game in Guwahati on Sunday by 40 runs.
Gambhir put on 87 for the first wicket with Murali Vijay (33) and 116 for the second with Virat Kohli, who followed up his century in Guwahati with a fluent 64.
The skipper hit 18 boundaries in his fluent knock.
Gambhir led India as regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was rested for the series along with other senior players

HYDERABAD: Spinner Harbhajan Singh hit a second consecutive test hundred to extend India’s first innings lead to 122 runs over New Zealand before the hosts were dismissed on the fourth morning of the second test on Monday.
The off-spinner continued tormenting the visitors with an unbeaten 111, following up scores of 69 and 115 in the first test, and bludgeoned the New Zealand attack with seven boundaries and seven sixes to bring up his second test century.
Harbhajan added 105 runs for the last final with Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, who provided able support with 24 off 71 deliveries, before the hosts were all out for 472 in response to New Zealand’s 350.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori got Sreesanth out leg before to complete his 19th five-wicket haul in a test innings.

Indian bowlers restrict New Zealand to 350

HYDERABAD: India’s Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh picked up four wickets apiece to trigger a New Zealand batting collapse as the visitors folded up for 350 in their first innings of the second test on Saturday.
Resuming on a strong overnight score of 258-4 built on Tim McIntosh’s opening day ton, New Zealand added just 92 runs for the loss of six batsmen on day two at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
A watchful opening duo of Virender Sehwag (28) and Gautam Gambhir (29) then took India to 62 runs without loss at tea, continuing the hosts’ dominance on the second day.
In a fiery spell of left-arm swing bowling, Khan (4-69) trapped right-handers Gareth Hopkins (4) and Kane Williamson (4) leg before as he managed to get the ball to swing back from around the wicket.
Harbhajan then joined in the fun for the hosts by dismissing Daniel Vettori
Stunning defeat to Kiwis by Bangladesh, finish ODI series 4-0
The Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium may have been operating at a fraction of its full capacity due to World Cup renovations, but another nail-biting victory to Bangladesh in the final ODI against New Zealand sparked rapturous celebrations in the Mirpur crowd as the home team stormed to a 4-0 whitewash.
Bangladesh had been bowled out for just 174 by a spirited New Zealand attack that showed plenty of fire in the first half of the dead rubber, but a catastrophic top-order collapse ensured that not even a trademark fight back from the lower-order could restore some pride to an outfit that was thoroughly outplayed throughout the series.
The match was set up by an excellent bowling performance from the New Zealand attack, who dismissed the hosts for 174 in 44.2 overs. New Zealand made early breakthroughs through Kyle Mills and Andy McKay before choking the runs in the middle period to trigger a lower-order collapse that left Bangladesh defending a meager total.
The Bangladesh lower-order failed to offer any sort of resistance, succumbing meekly to some intelligent bowling from the tourists and losing their last six wickets for just 42 runs. The modest total proved to be enough for the hosts however, who completed a whitewash that will be talked about in Bangladesh for years to come.
Sri Lanka dominate first day in 2nd Test against India
COLOMBO: Tharanga Paranavitana and Kumar Sangakkara flayed India”s bowlers for centuries in consecutive matches as Sri Lanka dominated the opening day of the second Test on Monday.
The left-handed duo, who made hundreds in their victorious first Test in Galle, put on 174 for the second wicket to help the hosts pile up 312-2 by stumps at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Paranavitana, a 28-year-old playing his 12th Test, revelled in the familiar environs of his home club to follow his maiden century at Galle with a fluent 100.
Skipper Sangakkara returned unbeaten on 130, his 23rd Test hundred, after he won the toss and elected to take first strike in typically good batting conditions at the SSC.
Both players reached their centuries in the same over, the 71st of the innings, as Paranavitana took three runs off a Pragyan Ojha misfield and Sangakkara lofted Virender Sehwag for a boundary.
Paranavitana was dimissed in the next over, bowled by seamer Ishant Sharma off the inside edge, but former captain Mahela Jayawardene kept Sangakkara company at stumps on 13.
The easy-paced wicket left India”s bowlers facing an uphill struggle in hot and humid weather after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni lost his seventh straight toss.
Young seamer Abhimanyu Mithun went for 0-75 in 17 overs and leading spinner Harbhajan Singh gave away 61 runs in 22 wicketless overs.
India, trailing 1-0 in the three-match series, suffered twin blows when opener Gautam Gambhir and middle-order batsman Yuvraj were ruled out of the key match.
Gambhir failed to recover from a knee injury, while Yuvraj developed high fever overnight.
The duo were replaced by left-hand batsman Suresh Raina, making his Test debut after playing 98 one-day internationals, and opener Murali Vijay.
Sri Lanka changed the entire frontline bowling attack that won them the first Test by 10 wickets.
With Muttiah Muralitharan now retired and fast bowler Lasith Malinga injured, the hosts replaced them with spinner Ajantha Fernando and Dilhara Fernando.
Also out were left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and seamer Chanaka Welegedara. Their places went to debutant off-spinner Suraj Randiv and fast bowler Dammika Prasad.
Paranavitana and Dilshan gave Sri Lanka a flying start by hammering 99 for the first wicket in 18 overs.
Dilshan smashed 54 off 42 balls before he was caught at short extra-cover by Venkatsai Laxman off left-arm spinner Ojha to provide India their only success of the morning session.
Dilshan hit Sharma for four consecutive boundaries and then took three in one over from Mithun.
When Paranavitana lofted Harbhajan for a six over mid-wicket, he brought up both the century partnership with Sangakkara and the 200 of the innings.
Paranavitana also struck 10 boundaries.
Depleted Sri Lanka eye series win over India
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka hope to overcome a weakened bowling attack and secure a series-clinching win in the second Test against India from Monday, their first match in the post-Muttiah Muralitharan era.
The world bowling record holder bid farewell to Test cricket last week by leading the hosts to an emphatic win in the first match in Galle, claiming eight scalps to end his career with 800 wickets.
Sri Lanka suffered a further blow ahead of the second Test at the Sinhalese sports club (SSC) when sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who grabbed 5-50 in the second innings at Galle, was ruled out with a knee injury.
Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara was confident the absence of Muralitharan and Malinga, who claimed 15 of the 20 Indian wickets between them, will not hamper his team”s progress in the series.
“We have bowlers who are looking for a chance to make a mark for themselves,” said Sangakkara. “This is their opportunity to prove themselves.”
Unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis will replace Muralitharan, while fast bowler Dilhara Fernando is expected to come in for Malinga.
Mendis, 25, is no stranger to the Indians, having grabbed 26 wickets in
three Tests against them on his debut in 2008 to fashion Sri Lanka”s 2-1 series win at home.
Mendis, who has 44 wickets so far in 10 Tests, reminded the Indians of his prowess when he took 6-67 in a three-day practice match at the start of the current tour.
The absence of Muralitharan and Malinga will bring relief to the Indians, who folded up for 276 and 338 in good batting conditions at Galle to lose by 10 wickets and put their number one ranking at stake.
India cannot afford another slip-up because a 2-0 or 3-0 series scoreline in Sri Lanka”s favour will remove Mahendra Singh Dhoni”s men from the perch and lift the hosts to the top spot.
India”s lone series win in Sri Lanka came way back in 1993, but coach Gary Kirsten was confident his team will bounce back in the remaining two Tests.
“The boys realise they did not play well in Galle and are determined to make amends,” Kirsten said. “This team knows how to win.”
India managed to take just eight Sri Lankan wickets in Galle as off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, the bowling spearhead in the absence of the injured Zaheer
Khan, failed to strike in either innings.
Kirsten was, however, delighted at seamer Abhimanyu Mithun”s four-wicket haul on debut in Sri Lanka”s massive 520-8 declared.
“I think he bowled superbly and showed a lot of heart in the long innings,” the coach said. “That was one of the bright spots for us at Galle.”
India may field the same 11 at the SSC although leg-spinner Amit Mishra is waiting in the wings to replace left-armer Pragyan Ojha, who went wicketless in 28 overs that cost 115 runs.
Opener Virender Sehwag, who hit a robust 109 in the first innings and a double-century on the previous tour in 2008, is the lone Indian to reach three-figures in a Test in Sri Lanka since 1999.
But the tourists will be heartened by a fluent 84 from veteran Sachin Tendulkar and half-centuries from Yuvraj Singh and Venkatsai Laxman in the first Test.

Earlier, two Twenty20 Internationals were also played between the two teams and both matches were won by South Africa.
As South Africa team has a psychological edge over the West Indies but the hosts are determined to get a rhythm soon.

WI see off England in rain-hit clash on D/L method
PROVIDENCE, Guyana: West Indies won through to the second round of the World Twenty20 after beating England by eight wickets in a match whose context was completely changed by rain here on Monday.
England made a challenging total of 191 for five, featuring 55 from former Ireland batsman Eoin Morgan, after being sent-in to bat by West Indies captain Chris Gayle.
But rain, which had interrupted Sri Lanka”s match against Zimbabwe here earlier in the day, returned after the West Indies had started their reply in barnstorming fashion to be 30 without loss at the Guyana National Stadium.
And when play resumed, the West Indies were left with a revised target of 60 in six overs, under the Duckworth/Lewis method for rain-affected matches.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul (15 not out) and Andre Fletcher (12 not out) saw the hosts to victory with a ball to spare as they scored the eight runs they needed off the last over, from fast bowler Stuart Broad.
England now have a winner-takes-all clash against Ireland, who suffered a 70-run Group D thrashing by the West Indies last week, here on Tuesday to decide which team will join the hosts in the Super Eights.
Left-hander Morgan faced just 35 balls and struck three sixes and six fours. Together with Luke Wright, unbeaten on 45 off 27 balls, he put on 95 for the fifth wicket.
England started well thanks to their new South Africa born opening pair of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter.
Lumb, on his international debut, took 16 off one Ravi Rampaul over.
Fast bowler Rampaul”s three overs cost a hugely expensive 52 runs in total. Wicketkeeper Kieswetter struck three sixes in as many balls, one off Rampaul and two off Nikita Miller.
But in-form West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy checked England”s progress with two wickets in the tenth over, bowling England captain Paul Collingwood for six and inducing Kevin Pietersen (24) to hole out to midwicket.
With England 88 for four at the halfway mark, Morgan and Wright consolidated before going for their shots, Wright striking two sixes off Kieron Pollard”s first over.
Morgan then demonstrated his dexterity by sweeping Dwayne Bravo for six, with England scoring 76 runs in the final five overs of their innings.
