In reaction to it formers stopped cotton picking, rendering thousands of women jobless. Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association continued their strike against the imposition of withholding Tax, due to which factory owners stopped buying cotton. This situation has endangered the jobs of millions of cotton-pickers. Ginners Association representatives say they will continue their strike until the withdrawal of the tax.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs has given a formal approval of the Reformed General Sales Tax Bill and imposition of Flood Surcharge on Tuesday.
A meeting of Senate’s financial committee was held in Islamabad today. Senator Islam-ud-din Sheikh chaired the meeting.
The meeting gave a unanimous approval for RGST Bill after rejecting proposals to impose GST on books and edible items including milk.
The members of Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) did not attend but sent a resolution in the meeting. The MQM resolution demanded that the committee should reject the RGST Bill and approve agricultural tax.
The committee approved the Reformed Finance Bill-2010 for the imposition of Flood Surcharge but proposed to amend the earning limit from Rs. 0.3 million to 0.5 million annually.

ISLAMABAD: Lawyers all across Pakistan are observing Nov. 3 (today) as a black day to evoke ex-president Pervez Musharraf’s extra constitutional act against the judiciary.
The ex-president Pervez Musharraf imposed an emergency, in the capacity of army chief, on November 3, 2010 and sacked all prominent judges of the higher courts and the Supreme Court including the Chief Justice of Pakistan and ordered the remaining and newly hired judges to take new oath under PCO.
The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) issued separate calls for observing black day on Wednesday (today).
The SCBA has said in its announcement that November 3 will be observed as a black day against the imposition of the gun’s law in the country.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafiz Sheikh on Friday said that more taxes needed to be imposed on capitalists, feudalists and owners of large properties to ensure provision of basic services to people.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad, he said an agreement has been reached with all four regarding the imposition of reformed GST.

Govt imposes flood tax; Punjab, MQM oppose
PPP leader Fauzia Wahab said that President Zardari has approved one-time flood tax in Sindh but Punjab government and MQM have opposed the decision, Dunya News reported on Monday.
Talking to media in Karachi, Fauzia said that one-time flood tax would be imposed, but after the approval of the National Assembly. She said that the President has approved imposition of flood tax. She said that this tax would also be imposed on Sindh. She said agriculture sector would be brought under tax net. She admitted that corruption was reported in the distribution of Watan Cards but there was a system of transparency that brought this corruption to surface. Punjab rejects flood tax: Sanaullah
PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah while talking to Dunya News has said that the Punjab government has opposed the imposition of one-time flood tax.
MQM not taken onboard: Farooq Sattar
Dr. Farooq Sattar said that MQM was not taken onboard and the party will oppose this decision. He said that due to skyrocketing inflation, suicide trend was on the rise and new tax will overburden the already depressed people, so MQM will oppose every such decision.
MQM opposes one-time flood tax: Dr. Sagheer
MQM leader Dr. Sagheer Ahmed said that MQM has opposed imposition of one-time tax and Sindh government has not taken MQM into confidence on this matter.
