HONG KONG: Australia clinched Hong Kong Super Sixes title after beating Pakistan by two wickets in the final match here on Sunday.

Pakistan was the hot favorite to win the tournament but they lost their way in the last over, giving away 44 runs.

Batting first, Pakistan scored over 130 runs. Ahmed Shahzad scored 92 runs off 28 balls to set a formidable target.

Australian started the chase well and achieved the target with one ball to spare.

Imran Nazir was called to bowl the last over. He lost his cool and gave too many extras, thus handing Australia an unlikely win in the end. Trend Pk

Instead Malik will lead a seven-member second-string Pakistan team for the Hong Kong event which will be held on November 6 and 7.

Pakistan chief selector Mohsin Khan said: “We have selected Malik to lead the team for the Hong Kong Super Sixes.”

Other members of the Pakistan team are Imran Nazir, Shoaib Khan, Sohail Khan, Shabbir Ahmed, Ahmed Shahzad and Asad Ali.

Nadal targets Barcelona after Monte Carlo win

MONTE CARLO: Rafael Nadal will approach his home tournament on the Barcelona clay with fresh confidence after securing a historic sixth straight Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday.

The king of clay retained his crown by outclassing Spanish compatriot Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-1 to lift his first title in 50 weeks.

In doing so Nadal became the first man in modern tennis history to win one event six times in succession and he will now look to repeat the trick in Barcelona.

“For me this is very emotional, this is probably my favorite tournament. I love this tournament. To win here another time is a dream for me,” he said.

“To win six times for me is unbelievable. I never expect something like that.”

He improved to 16-6 his record at the Masters 1000 level as he claimed the 26th clay title of his career, having lost his only two clay finals against Roger Federer, in Hamburg in 2007 and Madrid in 2009.

“When you don”t win for a while, and you are playing really well, you really want to win,” said Nadal. “You are focused more than ever.

“Maybe for that reason I won easier than usual. But that”s not normal. I”m going to have lots of problems on clay in the future.”

Verdasco, now 0-10 against Nadal, again came away impressed.

“He had an unbelievable day and he played really good. He didn”t let me attack him at all, with balls really high and deep,” said Verdasco.

“I also maybe didn”t have a good day. I was trying to force things and made more mistakes than usual.

“Today was my first Masters final. I had normal nerves before an important match. But they were nothing special.”

With volcano ash from Iceland creating travel havoc and grounding air traffic across Europe, Nadal and his team will have to make the 500-kilometre journey to Barcelona by road.

He will receive a first-round bye and is likely to face his first match on Wednesday after bringing his unwelcome trophy drought to an end.

The four-time Roland Garros champion returned to form with one of the most brilliant efforts of his storied career, losing a total of just 14 games and winning three matches with the loss of just one game in each.

Victory in the final was Nadal”s 32nd straight win at Monte Carlo and he remains undefeated at the venue since 2003.

He dominated against Verdasco with seven breaks of serve while his opponent committed 32 unforced errors.

The sixth-seeded challenger looked threatening only once, in the marathon sixth game of the second set, as he forced the fighting Nadal to save five break points to move ahead 5-1.

A game later it was all over on the first match point as Nadal broke back for victory.

Talking with media here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, abddul Qadir said that Waqar Younis is a good choice for coaching.

Chasing an easy target of 128 runs, Pakistan started disastrously by losing both their openers, Imran Nazir (naught) and Imran Farhat (8), for just 10 runs on the board.

However, wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal came to rescue to take his team out of trouble. He held the one end intact as other batsmen were being dismissed at regular intervals.

Pakistan were well on the way to success as long as Kamran was at the crease but his ouster changed the whole scenario and the tourists who were needing only 30 runs from 35 balls to win the match managed only 27 runs with one wicket remaining to give Australia their first T20 win against Paksitan.

Kamran blasted 64 off only 33 balls with seven fours and two sixes while the second top scorer was his younger brother Umar with 21. The only other batsman reaching double-figure was Umar Gul (10).

Shaun Tait was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 13 runs, supported by Shane Watson and Steve Smith claiming two wickets each.

Earlier, Michael Clarke who was leading the Aussies in the absence of Ricky Ponting, won the toss and elected to bat but his team could not make any big score and were all out for 127 in 18.4 overs.

Except Michael Hussey (40 not out), Clarke (32) and David Warner (24), no batsman could enter into double figures as three batmen were run out by alert Pakistani fielders.

For Pakistan, Umar Gul captured three wickets for 20 runs while Malik claimed two for 31. Pacers Mohammad Asif and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took one wicket each.

Shoaib Malik led Pakistan as their T20 captain Shahid Afridi was banned for playing two T20 matches for ball tampering.

Imran Nazir returned to Pakistan lineup and Imran Farhat made his T20 debut.

Australia also included two debutants – legs-pinning allrounder Steve Smith and left-handed batsman Travis Birt.

Pakistan crush New Zealand in Cool and Cool Cup 1st T20I

54709853190i Pakistan crush New Zealand in Cool and Cool Cup 1st T20IPakistan crushed New Zealand by 49 runs in the first T20I at the Dubai Sports City yesterday night. After being put into bat first, Pakistan were struggling at 134 for 6 in the 18th over but thanks to some late hitting from Razzaq and Tanvir got to 161. The Kiwis lost wickets early and were never in the race after getting reduced to 67 for 5.

The Black Caps were a weakened unit going into this match with Skipper Daniel Vettori opting out because of showing the after effects of taking a blow around his ear from a Mohammad Aamer bouncer in the 2nd ODI. The New Zealanders did well to keep Pakistan down to 56 for 2 in 8 overs after removing the Akmal Brothers cheaply. Imran Nazir at one end was doing all the damage with his crisp hitting but the opener couldn’t go beyond a 38-ball 58 (with 5 fours and 4 sixes). Skipper Shahid Afridi clouted a six over long on but his innings was just a cameo with 24 from 16 balls. Apart from Nazir and Afridi, there weren’t any scores coming in from the rest of the batsmen.

Pakistan had a good couple of last overs thanks to Razzaq (26* from 15 balls) and Sohail Tanvir (12 from 8 balls). Shane Bond was the pick of the bowlers giving away just 17 besides taking two wickets in his 4 overs. Aaron Redmond with his flighted leg breaks took the important wickets of Afridi and Malik but in the course also strained his groin.

After a sorry first over that went for 17 runs, Mohammad Aamer along with Sohali Tanvir struck back to make inroads for Pakistan. The inform Brendon McCullum who was leading the side got out square driving after a 13-ball 19 and was followed by Ross Taylor who got out to another loose cut shot. Pakistan kept on getting wickets regularly and the job for the spinners became too easy. The Kiwis were bowled out for 112 in 18.3 overs with regular opener Aaron Redmond not coming to bat at all. Imran Nazir got the Man of the Match award. The second and final T20I is tonight at this same venue.
