PCB submits Lanka team attack report to ICC
After much delay, the Pakistan Cricket Board has finally sent to the ICC, the inquiry report of last year’s Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lankan team.
An ICC spokesman confirmed that the report has been received on August 3 but declined to make any further comments on the issue. The report is confidential and the ICC would not like to make any comments on it, he said.
PCBchairmanEjaz Butt told that the report had been sent to the ICC following the approval of the Punjab government under whose jurisdiction the judicial inquiry was carried out by Justice Shabbar Hasan Rizvi of the Lahore High Court.
He submitted a 600 page report on the attack, which left many Sri Lankan cricketers injured. The board sent the report (on Lahore terror incident) to the ICC about one month ago after seeking the approval of the Punjab government, Butt said.
As the Punjab government had sent a copy of the judicial inquiry report to the PCB with the instruction to keep it confidential, we were not in a position to forward the report to the ICC initially. But soon after the Punjab government allowed us, the PCB dispatched the report to the international body (ICC), he added.
Terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team bus on March 3 last year in Lahore, an incident which shocked the cricket world and led to a total refusal by foreign teams to tour Pakistan for international matches.
The ICC also moved away the 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan because of security concerns raised by participating teams in the tournament.
Six Pakistani policemen and a van driver were killed in the vicious attack which also left five Sri Lankan players wounded and forced the visiting team to call off the tour.
Judge Shabbar Raza, during the course of his inquiry, interrogated various police and security officials of the Punjab government, besides the PCB chairman and other board officials.
Justice Shabbar’s report pointed out weaknesses in the security arrangements made by the Punjab government and also held several senior police officials responsible for negligence of duty and in failing to provide proper security to the visiting team.
Former ICC president Ehsan Mani has constantly blamed the PCB for dragging its feet on sending the report to the governing body.
Iraq war was illegal: UK

LONDON: The Deputy Prime Minister”s statement, while standing in for David Cameron in Prime Minister”s Questions, could lead to renewed legal claims against the Government and armed forces.
Clegg”s comments angered some Conservative MPs, many of whom, including Mr Cameron, had voted for the 2003 invasion. His remarks came as Mr Clegg clashed with Jack Straw, who was standing in for Harriet Harman, Labour”s leader.
Speaking about the former foreign secretary he said: “Maybe he one day – perhaps we will have to wait for his memoirs – could account for his role in the most disastrous decision of all, which is the illegal invasion of Iraq.”
The Liberal Democrats were the only mainstream party to oppose the decision to topple Saddam Hussein. In the Commons Mr Clegg seemed to revel in reminding Mr Straw that it was Labour that had taken the country to war illegally.
Before his surprise outburst Mr Clegg had enjoyed raucous backing from his Coalition colleagues as he stood in at the Dispatch Box for the first time for the Prime Minister who is in America.
But his comments were seized on as he was speaking for the Coalition. Downing Street unconvincingly claimed that Mr Clegg was allowed to speak in a personal capacity.
In an attempt to defuse the row Number 10 said that the Iraq Inquiry, led by Sir John Chilcot, would declare whether the invasion on March 2003 was illegal.
But hours later a spokesman for the inquiry made it clear that Sir John would not make a conclusion on whether the America-led invasion, which was backed by 45,000 British personnel, was legal.
However, Downing Street still chose not to distance itself from the comments as Tory MPs attacked Mr Clegg for his contentious remarks.
India women hockey players accuse coach for harassment
NEW DELHI: Indian hockey, in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent times, plunged to new depths with allegations of harassment against chief coach MK Kaushik levelled by some women players.
In addition, a videographer with the team has been sacked on charges of having affairs with call-girls and sex workers during the team”s recent tours to China and Canada.
Hockey India (HI) received an anonymous e-mail last week with five pictures of the videographer, Basavraj, with sex-workers.
HI has set up a committee headed by Rajiv Mehta – comprising Ajitpal Singh, Zafar Iqbal and Anupam Gulati – to look into the matter.
When the sports ministry was informed of the matter, it instructed HI to include a woman in the panel, after which Sudarshan Pathak was drafted in the committee.
“The videographer was sacked after the first meeting of the committee on Monday and a final decision on the matter will be taken within four-five days,” Mehta said. The second meeting of the committee is scheduled on Wednesday.
To make matters worse, a probable has also alleged that longstanding coach Kaushik, architect of the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games gold medal for the men”s team, with harassment and using vulgar language.
“The allegations are specifically against Kaushik and we have set up an inquiry to look into the matter,” Mehta said.
“The player mentioned that this was going on since March this year.” The team is scheduled to leave for the first Asian Champions Trophy (July 27- 31 in Busan, South Korea) on Thursday, but Kaushik will not accompany the players. “He told us that till the inquiry is completed, he is not interested in going with the team,” Mehta said.
According to a source, some players were asked for sexual favours by members of the team management, who are all male.
“There were two-three complaints against the videographer which prompted HI to set up the inquiry committee.
“There were also allegations of players being asked for sexual favours and were threatened that they may lose their spot in the squad,” the source said.
HI secretary general Narinder Batra said if any member of the team management was found guilty in the case, he will face a life ban. He assured the complaining players had nothing to fear and the charges will be treated seriously.
“It is a shameful chapter in Indian hockey. I would also like to urge the player to file a formal police complaint. The other players should also come forward with their grievances.
“They don”t have to worry about their future selection and safety. Hockey India will help them financially if they want to go to court,” Batra said.
The scandal comes to light a week before Hockey India election.
President Vidya Stokes, 82, filed her nomination against the government guidelines that put an age cap of 70 for the post.
Former national captain Pargat Singh, who is up against Stokes in the election, said “it is shocking to hear about such scandalous stories in our national sport. Hockey India will have to explain in detail all this before the election.”
