BANGALORE: Players and support staff will be updated on anti-corruption methods before next year’s World Cup in the Indian sub-continent, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday.

“It is absolutely vital for our flagship event and the future prosperity of cricket that we maintain public confidence in the integrity of the game,” ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in a statement after a meeting of the 2011 World Cup Central Organising Committee (COC).

“Repeating the education and awareness to players and support staff will leave no room for doubt. We are committed to a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.”

Cricket is battling a spot-fixing controversy which led to the provisional suspension of three Pakistani players and shed light on the huge illegal betting industry in the Indian sub-continent.

ECB may take legal action against Ijaz Butt

The England and Wales Cricket Board may take legal action against Ijaz Butt, the chairman of the PCB. Butt suggested that England’s players had accepted a bribe to lose the third ODI at The Oval, but the ECB said the allegations were wholly irresponsible and completely without foundation. However, the final two matches of Pakistan’s tour would go ahead as planned, the statement read.
It remains in the best interests of world cricket, the players and in particular of cricket supporters that the tour should continue, and it would set a dangerous precedent to call off a tour based on the misguided and inaccurate remarks made by one individual.
Captain Andrew Strauss, speaking on behalf of the team, said: We would like to express our surprise, dismay and outrage at the comments made by Mr Butt yesterday. We are deeply concerned and disappointed that our integrity as cricketers have been brought into question. We refute these allegations completely and will be working closely with the ECB to explore all legal options open to us.

No oil flowing into Gulf as test starts: BP

WASHINGTON: BP engineers Thursday stopped oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since April as they shut all valves on a new cap placed on top of a fractured wellhead, a BP official said.

“It is good to see no oil going into the Gulf of Mexico,” said senior vice president Kent Wells, but he cautioned: “We are just starting the test.”

He said the oil flow stopped as the last of three valves on a huge capping stack was shut at around 2:25 (1925 GMT) Thursday, but engineers were keeping a close eye on the operation to see whether any oil began leaking again.

It was the biggest step forward in halting the worst oil spill in US history which has been flowing into the sea since a BP-leased rig sank on April 22, two days after a major explosion on the deepwater drilling platform.

Experts have estimated some 35,000 to 60,000 barrels a day have been flowing into the Gulf for some 13 weeks, leaving millions of gallons sloshing around in the waters, threatening vulnerable wildlife and fouling the shores of five Gulf states.

BP”s chief operating officer Doug Suttles warned however it was not yet time to celebrate, saying more time was needed as a 48-hour test is completed.

“I think it”s an encouraging sign. In a couple of more days it may even be more encouraging, but no celebrations,” Suttles told reporters. “If you go talk to these people that live here, celebration is the wrong word.”

Wells reminded reporters the aim of the pressure tests was to “assess the integrity of the well” as it is not known whether the wellbore which stretches deep below the seabed was damaged in the April 20 explosion.

don t ask don t tell

8a58d634cbll 600 don t ask don t tellWASHINGTON — The House on Thursday delivered a victory to President Barack Obama and gay rights groups by approving a proposal to repeal the law that allows gays to serve in the military only if they don’t disclose their sexual orientation.

The 234-194 vote to overturn the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy reflected a view among many in Congress that America was ready for a military in which gays and straights can stand side by side in the trenches.

“I know that our military draws its strength on the integrity of our unified force, and current law challenges this integrity by creating two realities within the ranks,” Rep. Susan Davis, D-Calif., said.

Republicans, who voted overwhelmingly against it, cited statements by some military leaders that they need more time to study how a change in the law could affect the lives and readiness of service members.

The House vote came just hours after the Senate Armed Services Committee took the same course and voted 16-12 in favor of repealing the 1993 law. In both cases the measure was offered as an amendment to a defense spending bill.

Obama and leading Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had actively supported the repeal so that gays could serve in the military without fear of being exposed and discharged.
