Las Vegas Gadget Show Ends

Gadgets revealed at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas flop more often than they pop.

0f12e9ebt show ends Las Vegas Gadget Show EndsMicrosoft provided a sneak peek at a radical new version of Windows, Verizon showed the first consumer gadgets for a wireless network that’s faster in many cases than wired broadband, and many manufacturers showed tablet computers with the potential to give Apple’s iPad a run for its money. Touch-screen tablet computers crowded the show, as brand names large and small showed off a slew of devices meant to compete with Apple Inc.’s iPad. From a hardware standpoint, companies touted features that the iPad doesn’t yet have, such as front- and rear-facing cameras for video chatting and taking high-definition videos and the ability to operate over wireless carriers’ new and forthcoming high-speed networks, together known as 4G. As for software, the upcoming Honeycomb version of Google Inc.’s Android software seemed a popular choice. For now, only plug-in laptop modems can take advantage of it, but at the show, Verizon showed off smart phones from Motorola, LG Electronics Inc., HTC Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. set to arrive in the first half of year, along with two tablets. However, Verizon promptly stole its own thunder by inviting journalists to a second press conference on Tuesday in New York, less than a week after its big reveal in Las Vegas. It’s widely believed that Verizon will announce that it will start selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone, now available in the U.S. exclusively through rival AT&T Inc. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that this is the case. Intel and AMD, whose processors are the brains of PCs, unveiled new chips with significant design changes, in part to help them hold off threats from tablets and smart phones. The idea is to make traditional, low-cost computers using their chips more competitive with the mobile devices. Last year’s big new thing in TVs, 3-D, didn’t catch on as manufacturers had hoped. One problem might be the bulky, expensive, battery-powered glasses the sets need. This year, LG Electronics Inc. is trying a different take on 3-D, with light, inexpensive glasses of the kind used in movie theaters.

B Vitamins Help Memory Problems

Taking certain B vitamin supplements on a daily basis can cut in half the rate of brain shrinkage in elderly people suffering from mild memory problems, reveals a new Oxford University study.

c03700d83eoblems.jpg B Vitamins Help Memory ProblemsApproximately 1 in 6 elderly people over the age of 70 has mild cognitive impairment, experiencing troubles with memory, language or other mental functions, but not enough to interfere with everyday life.
About half of people with mild cognitive impairment will go on to develop dementia – mainly Alzheimer’s disease – within five years of diagnosis. Certain B vitamins – vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid – control levels of homocysteine in the blood, and it is known that high levels of this amino acid are linked to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s. So a team from the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA) set out to discover whether supplements of these B vitamins could slow down the higher rate of brain shrinkage, or atrophy, as seen in mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s. The study observed 168 volunteers aged 70 or over with mild memory problems. Half of these volunteers took high-dose B vitamin tablets for two years while the other half took a placebo tablet. The scientists evaluated disease progression in this group by using MRI scans to measure the brain atrophy rate over a two-year period. The findings are published in the journal PLoS ONE. The researchers found that the brains of those taking folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 supplements shrank at a rate of about 0.76 percent a year, while those in the placebo group had a mean brain shrinkage rate of 1.08 percent. People with the highest levels of homocysteine benefited the most, showing atrophy at only half the rate of those on placebo. It is our hope that this simple and safe treatment will delay the development of Alzheimer’s disease in many people who suffer from mild memory problems, said Professor David Smith of the department of pharmacology at Oxford University, a co-leader of the trial. Along with studying the rate of brain shrinkage, the scientists also evaluated cognitive test scores, discovering that those with the slowest rate of shrinkage scored the strongest in cognition.

Blackberry Playbook Price

Blackberry Playbook Price, We have reported on the key features of the BlackBerry PlayBook  tablet, but one thing that wasn’t mentioned at the BlackBerry developer Conference was price. We have an article now, which suggests that RIM’s latest device won’t come cheap.

a43ea9e5baPrice.jpg Blackberry Playbook PriceThe article in question comes from Zdnet, who have stated that the BlackBerry Playbook may come in at $1000 or even higher. This may seem slightly outrageous to the average consumer, but don’t forget that the PlayBook features some specs which are not available in the market at the moment.

An example of this has to be the surprise inclusion of a dual-core CPU, consisting of two 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processors. This is a first for the tablet world, although this is expected to become more mainstream during the middle of 2011, according to Zdnet.

If you were thinking that the price would come in alongside the iPad to compete, think again. The Playbook comes with 2 HD cameras: a 5MP on the back, and a 3MP on the front with both having support for 1080p Video Recording – In a word, impressive.

The spec-heavy PlayBook warrants a much higher price than the iPad, so don’t be too surprised when RIM slap a $1000-1300 price tag on their new device.

Ice Deposits Discovered At Moon’s Pole

53f18dba0ds pole Ice Deposits Discovered At Moon’s PoleThe US space agency’s (Nasa) Mini-Sar experiment found more than 40 small craters containing water ice. But other compounds – such as hydrocarbons – are mixed up in lunar ice, according to new results from another lunar mission called LCROSS.
The findings were presented at a major planetary science conference in Texas.
The craters with ice range from 2km to 15km (one to nine miles) in diameter; how much there is depends on its thickness in each crater. But Nasa says the ice must be at least a couple of metres thick to give the signature seen by Chandrayaan-1.
Dr Paul Spudis, from the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, estimated there was at least 600 million metric tonnes of water ice held within these impact craters.
The equivalent amount, expressed as rocket fuel, would be enough to launch one space shuttle per day for 2,200 years, he told journalists at the 41st Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.
What all these craters have in common are large areas of their interiors that never see sunlight. Temperatures in some of these permanently darkened craters can drop as low as 25 Kelvin (-248C; -415F) – colder than the surface of Pluto – allowing water ice to remain stable.
“It is mostly pure water ice,” said Dr Spudis, “it could be under a few tens of centimetres of dry regolith (lunar soil).” This protective layer of soil could prevent blocks of pure ice from vaporising even in some areas which are exposed to sunlight, he explained.
In February, President Barack Obama cancelled the programme designed to return Americans to the Moon by 2020.
However, Dr Spudis said: “Now we can say with a fair degree of confidence that a sustainable human presence on the Moon is possible. It’s possible using the resources we find there.”
“The results from these missions, that we have seen in the last few months, are totally revolutionising our view of the Moon.”

Japan’s Biggest Internet Forum

April 20, 2010 by

d843c491c0forum Japan’s Biggest Internet ForumJapan’s biggest Internet forum, where anonymous netizens trade anything from cooking tips to death threats, has long been an anarchic zone of uninhibited free speech and a magnet for controversy.

This week the raw commentary on 2channel — which with 10 million visits a month is one of the world’s largest online bulletin boards — saw tempers flare anew.

A massive hacker attack from South Korea crippled the site in retaliation for users’ online slights against Olympic skater Kim Yu-Na, after she beat Japanese rival Mao Asada to take gold at the Vancouver Winter Games.

The site was attacked on Monday, the anniversary of a 1919 uprising in Korea against Japanese colonial rule, and shut down for two days.

Japanese web users counter-attacked by bombarding South Korean sites, including that of the presidential office, according to South Korea’s JoongAng Daily, which called the tit-for-tat flaming “infantile”.

The Japanese site, www.2ch.net, does not ask for personal ID details and hosts unfiltered views, in contrast to most chat forums where registration and vetting have become the norm in a bid to keep discussion orderly.

“This is a vast group of bulletin boards on everything from hacking to porn,” the site tells users. It boasts about 1,000 topics, from politics to sport to manga comics.

“Sender information cannot be detected, so you can access it from your office, school or prison,” users are told. “Please write as you like.”

The site was launched in 1999 by a college student, Hiroyuki Nishimura, who has since written several books and is a regular on television shows.

Not counting online role-playing games, it is easily Japan’s biggest bulletin board by number of users and page views, according to research firm NetRatings Japan.

The site has given space for discussion on touchy subjects, including Japan’s royal family, and gay and lesbian life.

Companies and pollsters review the site to build marketing strategies and study the raw pulse of users and consumers.

At their best, the site’s postings have spawned books and movies, including a passionate chronicle by a shy man known as the Train Guy who dated a woman and sought advice from fellow 2channel users.

But no-holds-barred messages also voice sexist, nationalistic and xenophobic sentiments, many targeting Chinese and Koreans.

South Koreans were furious recently when a writer said the mob killing of a Korean college student in February in Irkutsk was “Russia’s good deed”.

At times, users have threatened crimes on the site.

One of them was Tomohiro Kato, who sent messages from his cellphone shortly before he killed seven people in a stabbing frenzy in Tokyo’s neon-lit electronics district in 2008, Japan’s bloodiest crime in years.

Nishimura, who gave up control of the site last year but maintains interests in many Internet companies, is unabashed about the darker side of 2channel.

“Ten million people come to the site every month. There is no city in the world with a population of 10 million that has no crime,” he said.

Tsutomu Kanayama, professor of journalism and communications at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, said 2channel laid bare the pluses and minuses of the social media revolution.

“Mainly because of the anonymity system, it has gone too far and is now full of offensive and meaningless comments,” he said.

“But on the other hand, it’s a positive trial for a future cyber-forum where anyone can pose real opinions freely. It has both a light and a dark side.”

Cancer Risk For Those Who Never Smoke

4e30cabc6a0x1001 Cancer Risk For Those Who Never SmokePARIS : A trawl through the DNA codes of hundreds of individuals may help explain why some people who never smoke may be unusually at risk from lung cancer, doctors said on Monday.

Lung cancer is commonly believed to be the preserve of people who smoke or who have smoked.

Yet 10 percent of all lung cancer patients worldwide are “never smokers”, meaning they have not smoked a single cigarette or their lifetime’s tally is less than 100 cigarettes.

The proportion is even higher in Asia, where between 30 and 40 percent of lung cancer victims are “never smokers”. Nearly two-thirds of the worldwide tally among “never smokers” are women.

Work to assess the vulnerability of “never smokers” has been a somewhat neglected issue in cancer research, which has focussed on the far bigger number of smokers who develop lung tumours.

Gene sleuths led by Ping Yang from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, in Rochester, Minnesota, found two telltale genetic variants in Chromosome 13 in a study of 754 never smokers, with or without lung cancer.

Having these variants boosts the risk of lung cancer by nearly 60 percent, the study found.

The variants appear to suppress levels of a protein called GPC5, which plays a role in cell proliferation.

Further work is needed to confirm these findings and explore why never smokers develop cancer.

One theory is that someone with genetic vulnerability could develop lung cancer after a common, but as yet unidentified, trigger. Possible candidates include second-hand tobacco smoke, environmental pollutants, arsenic and the human papillomavirus.
