COLOMBO: Kumar Sangakkara hit an impressive 135 not out under pressure to boost Sri Lanka in the second Test against the West Indies on Wednesday.
The skipper hit one six and 16 fours in a 252-ball knock for his 24th Test hundred as Sri Lanka posted 294-5 in their first innings at stumps on the second day.
Prasanna Jayawardene was unbeaten on 12 when play was called off after tea due to rain.
Sangakkara steadied the innings with a record 170-run stand for the fourth wicket with Thilan Samaraweera (80) after three wickets fell for 34 runs on a new pitch on Tuesday’s opening day.
The stand was the best for the fourth wicket in Sri Lanka-West Indies Tests, surpassing the previous highest of 167 between Chris Gayle and Brendan Nash in the drawn first match of the ongoing three-match series in Galle.

GALLE: Opener Tharanga Paranavitana led Sri Lanka’s fightback to save the first test against West Indies with a patient knock of 83 not out on the fifth and final day on Friday.
The left-hander batted throughout the morning session, hitting seven fours in his 168-ball innings to take Sri Lanka to 159-2 wickets at lunch. Sri Lanka still trail West Indies by 43 runs with two sessions remaining.
West Indies scored 580-9 declared and Sri Lanka made 378 in the first innings and were forced to follow-on three runs short of avoiding being asked to bat again.
Mahela Jayawardene (13) kept Paranavitana company in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 49 off 151 balls.
West Indies started brightly and struck two early blows in the morning to have Sri Lanka struggling at 110-2 when Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara were dismissed within
India 95-0 in reply to Sri Lanka’s huge 642-4
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene revelled on their favourite hunting ground to send India chasing leather in the second cricket Test on Tuesday.
Sangakkara hit 219, his seventh double-century, and Jayawardene made 174 as Sri Lanka declared at 642-4 on the second day at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC).
India, who trail 1-0 in the three-match series, replied confidently with 95 for no loss by stumps, but still face a long haul to reach 443 and avoid the embarrassment of following on for the second game in a row.
Virender Sehwag was unbeaten on a typically aggressive 64 off 63 balls, while Murali Vijay was on 22.
Sangakkara and former captain Jayawardene continued the run-spree after opener Tharanga Paranavitana”s century on the first day on a lifeless wicket that afforded no help to the bowlers.
The senior duo, who compiled Test cricket”s highest partnership of 624 runs at the same venue against South Africa four years ago, put on 193 runs for the third wicket.
Sangakkara”s seventh double-century brought him level with Wally Hammond of England. Only Australian legend Don Bradman (12) and West Indian Brian Lara (nine) have more scores of 200 or more.
Jayawardene”s 10th three-figure knock at the SSC is the most by a batsman at a single ground, surpassing Bradman”s tally of nine at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Starting the day at 312-2, Sangakkara and Jayawardene added 65 runs from 14 overs in the first hour, easily seeing off the second new ball claimed late on Monday evening.
By lunch, Sri Lanka had hammered 145 runs in 29 overs in the morning session.
Sangakkara moved to 199 with four boundaries in one over from left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, and then reached 200 with an edged four to third man off Harbhajan Singh.
Sangakkara, who was on 214 at lunch, fell in the fourth over after the break when he edged a lazy drive off part-time spinner Virender Sehwag to lone slip Rahul Dravid.
The left-hander hit 29 boundaries during his seven-hour stay at the crease.
Jayawardene smashed 20 boundaries and a six in his 28th Test century before holing out to mid-wicket to give off-spinner Harbhajan his first success in the series.
Thilan Samaraweera remained unbeaten on 76, having put on 176 for the fourth wicket with Jayawardene.

Sri Lanka ask Indian batsmen to save first Test
Hosts India are under tremendous pressure to force a draw on the final day of the Ahmedabad Test. They have already lost the key wickets of Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid in the 45 overs of batting they had on the fourth day.
However, things do look bright for India with a second innings total of 190 for 2 at stumps today. Gautam Gambhir is unbeaten at stumps with a superb 70 and along with him is night watchman Amit Mishra who has shown good technique to kill some time on his own.
Sri Lanka resuming the fourth day’s play at 591 for 5 went to lunch without losing a single wicket again. Mahela Jayawardene went past 250 and Prasanna Jayawardene notched up his second test hundred. After lunch, Sri Lanka batted for less than hour to take the score to 760 for 7 before declaring their innings.
The lead the Sri Lankans settled for was a monstrous one of 334 runs. Mahela Jayawardene’s marathon knock came to an end when he danced down to hoick Amit Mishra but only to be bowled for a score of 275 (from 435 balls with 27 fours and a six). Mahela put on a new world record partnership of 351 with Prasanna Jayawardene who finished unbeaten on 154 (from 314 balls with 11 fours) at the time of the declaration.
India seemed to have got a bright start as they went to Tea at 77 for no loss but immediately at the start of the final session, Virender Sehwag went for an over confident slog sweep off Rangana Herath but only to get caught at mid on. Sehwag by then had stroked his way to 51 (from 67 balls with 7 fours).
The homeside recovered after losing Sehwag with Gambhir and Dravid batting with plenty of assurance and at the same time keeping the scoreboard busy. During the dying moments of the fourth day, Umpire Daryl Harper gave a well set Rahul Dravid lbw to put India back in trouble. Dravid (38 from 66 balls with 6 fours) shuffled across and missed an inswinger from left armer Chanaka Welegedara but the ball was angling down the legside from round the sticks.
Gambhir and Mishra batted through the remaining few overs to ensure that India went to stumps losing only those two wickets. The pitch still remains good for batting but Sri Lanka have two quality spinners in Muralitharan and Herath to sustain high amount of pressures on the batsmen during the final day. India first needs to wipe out the deficit which has come down to 144 runs.
