England beat Bangladesh by 6 wkts in 1st ODI

NOTTINGHAM: Ian Bell marked his return to England”s one-day side with an unbeaten 84 as they defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in the first of a three-match series at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Bell, recalled in the absence of injured Kevin Pietersen, faced 101 balls with six fours as England, chasing 251 to win, finished on 251 for four with 29 balls to spare in this day/night fixture.

Defeat left Bangladesh still searching for their first win against England, who have now beaten the Tigers in 20 matches all told, a sequence comprising eight Test victories and 12 one-day international successes.

This was Bell”s first ODI since facing India in Bangalore in November 2008.

However, he”d restated his one-day case with a limited overs best 158 for the second string England Lions in their tied triangular series match against India A on Tuesday.

This was a much less spectacular innings but one England needed after they lost two wickets in quick succession to be 93 for two.

Earlier, Bangladesh”s Raqibul Hasan marked his return to international duty with 76 in a total of 250 for nine after Tigers captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss.

Raqibul hadn”t played for his country since an ODI against New Zealand in Napier in February after quitting in protest at being left out of Bangladesh”s 30-man preliminary squad for the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.

England made a rapid start to their reply thanks to a first wicket-stand of 75 between captain Andrew Strauss, whose 37-ball fifty featured seven boundaries, and Craig Kieswetter.

Strauss has opted out of Twenty20 – in which Kieswetter won the man of the match award for his 63 in England”s World Twenty20 final win over Australia in Barbados in May – because he believes his game is not suited to the format.

But there was no lack of aggression from the left-hander as he lofted Shafiul Islam over extra-cover.

However, in the 12th over and having just reached his fifty, Strauss was needlessly run out.

Kieswetter pushed spinner Abdur Razzak into the covers and Strauss called him through for a single. But Strauss, who didn”t dive, failed by a fraction to beat Mahmudullah”s direct hit from cover.

Then Kieswetter, who”d launched Razzak for six, fell for 32 when he top-edged a slog-sweep off Shakib Al Hasan, another of Bangladesh”s spinners, and Faisal Hossain took a well-judged catch on the boundary.

Paul Collingwood and Bell stopped the rot with a partnership of 80, albeit in 100 balls.

Collingwood was out for 33 when a top-edged sweep off Shakib was caught by stand-in wicketkeeper Junaid Siddique, deputising after Mushifqur Rahim was hit in the face by a Faisal delivery.

But Bell, using his feet well against the spinners, saw England to victory with his 16th fifty in 80 ODIs.

Tamim Iqbal, who made hundreds in both of England”s two recent Test wins over the Tigers, got Bangladesh off to a blistering start as he slammed fours off the first two balls of the innings from James Anderson.

But their run-rate was checked when Tamim, trying to guide a straight ball from first change Stuart Broad to third man, was lbw for 28 to leave Bangladesh 40 for one.

Siddique and Raqibul frustrated England and it needed the introduction of left-arm spinner Michael Yardy, the seventh bowler used, to break the third-wicket stand when he had Siddique lbw for 51.

The series continues at Bristol on Saturday.

Afridi inspires Pakistan to big win in Asia Cup

DAMBULLA: Skipper Shahid Afridi smashed a glorious 124 off 60 balls as Pakistan ended their Asia Cup campaign with a 139-run rout of Bangladesh on Monday.

Afridi plundered 17 boundaries and four sixes to lead Pakistan to their highest one-day total of 385-7, before Bangladesh replied with 246-5 in the day-night match.

Junaid Siddique top-scored for Bangladesh with 97 after sharing a second-wicket stand of 160 with Imrul Kayes, who made 66.

It was Pakistan”s lone victory in the four-nation tournament and came after India and defending champions Sri Lanka had already qualified for Thursday”s final with two wins each.

Bangladesh return home beaten in all three matches.

India and Sri Lanka clash in the last league match on Tuesday to prepare for the final at the Rangiri stadium in Dambulla.

Pakistan”s total surpassed their previous best of 371-9 against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996, a match in which Afridi cracked the fastest one-day century ever off 37 balls.

Pakistan, who had lost narrowly to both India and Sri Lanka, used the game to display their batting power after openers Imran Farhat (66) and Shahzaib Hasan (50) put on 81 by the 13th over.

There was another half-century from Umar Akmal, who made 50 during a fifth-wicket stand of 136 with Afridi.

Pakistan hammered 120 runs in the last nine overs as the Bangladesh bowling wilted under the spectacular assault.

Pakistan”s innings was marred by the bizarre dismissal of Umar Amin, who was run out by Mohammad Mahmudullah while moving from the off to the leg-side at the non-striker”s end after completing a single.

Amin”s bat was in the air as he walked across the popping crease and was clearly not trying to steal a single when Mahmudullah broke the stumps.

Umpires Billy Doctrove and Bruce Oxenford referred the decision to the TV umpire, who declared Amin run out.

Bradley”s late strike seals US draw with Slovenia

JOHANNESBURG: Midfielder Michael Bradley”s late goal sealed the United States” fight back as they drew 2-2 with Slovenia at the World Cup on Friday night to keep their hopes of reaching the Last 16 alive.

Slovenia were heading to their second win of the tournament, and unexpectedly becoming the first team into the last 16, having led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals by midfielder Valter Birsa and striker Zlatan
Ljubijankic before the US fought back to force the equaliser.

First right-wing Landon Donovan scored a superb goal on 48 minutes, then the equaliser came with eight minutes left as US striker Jozy Altidore flicked on a header deep in the penalty area and Bradley – son of the coach Bob – fired his shot home.

Slovenia had got off to the ideal start when Auxerre”s Birsa drilled in a long-range shot from 30 metres out which flew into the back of the net with US goalkeeper Tim Howard rooted to the spot after 13 minutes.

Centre-back Oguchi Onyewu”s challenge on Birsa looked to have left the goalkeeper unsighted.

Slovenia centre-back Bostjan Cesar then picked up the first yellow card of the match when he fouled Altidore on 35 minutes and Francisco Torres” free-kick forced the Slovenian goalkeeper into a diving save.

The US threatened with half-time approaching as a Bradley shot was saved off the line, but in the melee striker Robbie Findley was booked for hand ball and misses the next game against Algeria next Wednesday in Pretoria.

With three minutes left of the half, Ljubijankic latched onto a well-timed pass which split the US defence and drilled his shot past Everton”s Howard to make it 2-0 at the break.

US coach Bradley made two changes at the break bringing Maurice Edu in as a defensive midfielder and putting Benny Feilhaber on the wing.

It paid off as US Galaxy”s Donovan controlled the long-ball, dribbled into the area and drilled his shot into the roof of the net past Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic just three minutes into the half.

Slovenian centre-back Marko Suler was booked on 69 minutes for hauling down Altidore just outside the area and the forward managed to latch onto the end of the resulting free-kick but fired his shot at Handanovic.

With the US upping the pace, Slovenia”s left-wing Andraz Kirm also went into the referee”s book as did Bojan Jokic for a foul on Donovan just before Bradley”s late equaliser.

The US looked to have taken a sensational lead when Edu scored with time almost up, but the referee judged the goal off-side.

Both teams now have all to play for in their last group match when Slovenia play England in Port Elizabeth next Wednesday and the US face Algeria.

England play Algeria later on Friday in Cape Town.

Dilshan shines as Sri Lanka crush Bangladesh

DAMBULLA: Tillakaratne Dilshan starred with bat and ball as Sri Lanka trounced Bangladesh by 126 runs on Friday to virtually book their place in the Asia Cup final.

Dilshan smashed 71 off 51 balls and claimed three wickets as the defending champions piled up a commanding 312-4 in their 50 overs and then shot out Bangladesh for 186.

It was Sri Lanka”s second win in a row after the 16-run defeat of Pakistan in their opening match and helped them step closer to becoming the first team to take a berth in the June 24 final.

Bangladesh, who had lost to India on Wednesday, are virtually out of contention in the four-nation tournament.

Sri Lanka put on a dazzling batting performance to record the highest total ever at the Rangiri international stadium in Dambulla.

Dilshan and Upul Tharanga set the ball rolling with an opening stand of 111 by the 16th over after Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night match.

Tharanga (54) and Sangakkara (52) hit half-centuries to build on Dilshan”s aggressive knock which included 11 boundaries and a six.

Mahela Jayawardene chipped in with 43 during a third-wicket stand of 69 with Sangakkara.

Angelo Mathews (42 not out) and Chamara Kapugedera (37 not out) hammered 73 runs in the last 10 overs to set Bangladesh a tough target of six runs an over under lights.

Bangladesh found the task beyond their reach despite a typically aggressive 51 off 53 balls by left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal.

Tamim put on 57 for the second wicket with Junaid Siddique (38) after opening partner Imrul Kayes was caught in the slips off Nuwan Kulasekera for three.

Bangladesh, who were 77-1 at one stage, lost five wickets for 66 runs as Dilshan and Muttiah Muralitharan sliced through the middle order.

Dilshan, bowling off-spin, sealed Bangladesh”s fate in the space of nine deliveries when he had Tamim stumped by Sangakkara and then trapped Mohammad Ashraful leg-before.

Dilshan also removed Mushfiqur Rahim, while Muralitharan dismissed Junaid Siddique and skipper Shakib Al Hasan at the other end.

Shakira visits South African school ahead of football WC

JOHANNESBURG: A group of South African students showed Shakira how their hips don”t lie when they danced to the rhythm of the African drum Wednesday while the singer was visiting their suburban elementary school south of the city.

The Colombian pop star came to the Isu”lihle school, on the narrow, sinewy streets of the suburb of Soweto, to promote the 1Goal initiative, which urges world leaders to make education a political priority to improve the quality of life around the globe.

Shakira is among the artists performing Thursday at the World Cup Kickoff Concert. Juanes, Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas are also slated to perform.

The schoolgirls, in red and black printed dresses, began to dance the Zulu “Indlamu” as soon as Shakira came through the school”s doors.

The dancing continued with a performance from a local dance troupe, Youth Stand Together. They demonstrated the “Gumboot dance,” with choreography inspired by South African miners who finish their workday with a mix of celebration and vigorous physical movements that help keep them in shape.

Later, sitting at a desk with a group of students, Shakira told stories of her elementary school days.

“The first two days, when my mom brought me to school, I cried,” she said. “But later I told her, ”I”m OK mom. I like it.””

Next, it was off to the school”s field, where she thanked the students for their performances by teaching them a few steps of “Waka Waka,” the official song of the World Cup. For a moment, everyone danced together to the beat of the drum.

England win by 8 wkts after Tigers collapse at Lord’s

LONDON: England eased to an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh on the final day of the first Test on
Monday after Steven Finn captured five wickets in an innings in his first Test at Lord”s.

Finn, 21, who made his debut on the two-Test tour of Bangladesh in March, finished with five for 87 from 24 overs of accurate, probing pace bowling from the Pavilion End. He took four for 100 in the first innings.

Set 160 to win in two full sessions, England reached their target in the last over before tea.

Captain Andrew Strauss began at breakneck speed with four boundaries off the first two overs and reached his half-century from as many balls. After making 83 in the first innings on his return to the England side he was out for 82 from 88 balls, edging a catch behind off his opposite number Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh lost their remaining five wickets in the morning for only 54 runs, a disappointing performance following their exuberant batting on Sunday which looked likely to salvage a draw after they had lost each of their previous six Tests against England.

Finn struck three times in 15 balls after play resumed on a chilly, overcast morning with Bangladesh on 328 for five, removing Shakhib (16), Junaid Siddique (74) and Mushfiqur Rahim (0) in consecutive overs,

Shakib guided a simple catch to Eoin Morgan at cover point and Siddique”s patient innings ended after more than four hours when he was deceived by a slower delivery and lobbed the ball to Tim Bresnan at mid-off. Mushfiqur edged an excellent ball moving away off the pitch to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

Bresnan took his first wicket when Rubel Hossain (4) edged a low catch to Strauss at first slip and he ended the innings when Mahmudullah was caught behind by Prior for 19.

Tamim rallies Bangladesh after Trott double-ton

May 28, 2010 by

LONDON: Tamim Iqbal”s typically dashing 42 not out led a Bangladesh counter-attack on the second day of the first Test against England at Lord”s here on Friday.

At tea, Bangladesh were 67 without loss but still 438 runs behind an England first innings 505 that featured Jonathan Trott”s Test best 226 and the Tigers needed a further 239 to avoid the follow-on in the first of a two-match series.

But diminutive left-hander Tamim, who had left the field earlier Friday after appearing to aggravate a wrist injury while diving into a boundary rope, was undaunted, his runs coming off 47 balls with six boundaries.

He hit through the line against Tim Bresnan for an impressive offside four.

Bresnan”s five overs cost an expensive 25 runs and he was replaced by 6ft 7in tall fast bowler Steven Finn, playing his first Test in England.

But, on his Middlesex home ground, Finn”s third delivery was driven straight down the ground by Tamim.

Fellow left-hander Imrul Kayes was unbeaten on 22, with the nearest Bangladesh came to losing a wicket a couple of potential run-outs.

Tamim”s approach was in contrast to that of Trott, whose maiden Test innings at Lord”s spanned over eight hours and featured 349 balls with 20 fours.

It was also Trott”s second century in as many Test innings in England after his 119 on debut against Australia in the second innings at the Oval last year.

Trott was one of five wickets for fast bowler Shahadat Hossain, whose return of five for 98 runs in 28 overs was the best by a Bangladesh bowler in a Test innings against England.

A match that had been meandering along, sprang into life after lunch with Shahadat taking three wickets for 12 runs in 21 balls.

Shahadat, 23, had Bresnan (25) taken at slip by Junaid Siddique before inducing a rare aggressive stroke from Trott, who guided him to Kayes at gully.

Trott”s innings saw the former South Africa junior international become only the seventh England batsman and 14th overall to make a Test double century at Lord”s.

Trott”s exit left England 478 for eight but new batsman Swann, straight driving Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan for six, revived the innings with a brisk 22 before he holed out.

Anderson eventually took England past 500 with a cheeky reverse sweep four off left-arm spinner Shakib before he was bowled by a jubilant Shahadat — a wicket that secured the bowler a coveted place on the Lord”s honours boards.

Bangladesh, who have won just three out of their 66 Tests and lost all six against England, were a much improved bowling side from the lacklustre unit that took the field on Thursday after Shakib won the toss.

England were 362 for four overnight, with Trott already a Test-best 175 not out and Middlesex left-hander Eoin Morgan, on his Test debut, 40 not out.

But the former Ireland batsman had added just four runs when he edged Shahadat behind and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim held a good diving catch.

England gifted Bangladesh a sixth wicket on 400 when a mix-up between Trott and Matt Prior saw the wicketkeeper run out.

The normally methodical Trott had some nervous moments in the 190s but a controlled pull for two off Rubel Hossain took the 29-year-old Warwickshire batsman to 200.

National Games Postponed

LAHORE: Country’s annual National Games, scheduled to be held in Peshawar this month, have been postponed because of security concerns, the National Olympic Committee said on Tuesday.17ac436172poned1 National Games Postponed

The games are the latest sporting event to be affected by security worries in the country that has been hit by a series of militant attacks, including the ambush of the Sri Lanka cricket team’s bus last year.

On Tuesday the International Tennis Federation moved a Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group-II semi-final tie scheduled in Lahore in July to New Zealand after a request from the visiting team.

National Olympic Committee president Arif Hasan told a news conference in Lahore after a meeting of the executive council that the security situation in the country and Peshawar had prompted the postponement of the games.

“Teams are already not willing to come to Pakistan because of the security issues and we don’t want a situation where a domestic event is also affected by some incident,” Hasan said.

The National Games are the biggest domestic sporting event in Pakistan and more than 3,000 athletes take part in different disciplines.

Hasan said the relevant authorities in Peshawar were not willing to give security clearance for the games at this stage.

“We took the prevailing situation in the country into consideration and felt the best thing at this stage was to postpone the games,” he said.

“There was also pressure from parents and associations to postpone the games and obviously nothing is more important to us than the safety of our athletes and officials.”

The National Games have already been postponed once before last year due to security issues.

Hasan said new dates in December were subject to security clearance.

There has been a surge of militant strikes in Peshawar since the army went on the offensive against Pakistani Taliban militants in their South Waziristan stronghold on the Afghan border last October.

Last week suicide bombers targeting the Pakistani military killed at least 45 people in Lahore.
