Cannes film festival: Apichatpong Weerasethakul wins Palme d’Or

The Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul is known for his shape-shifting tales. Many of his films, like “Tropical Malady” (2004) and “Syndromes of a Century” (2006), seem to start over midway through, as if reincarnated.
As its title suggests, Mr. Apichatpong’s new film, “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives,” is itself a story of death and rebirth. Beloved by many critics here — the halls of the Palais des Festivals were abuzz after the film’s first press screening on Thursday — and the winner of the top prize at Sunday’s awards ceremony, “Uncle Boonmee” is a gently comic animist fable, a film about a dying man that is nonetheless filled with enigmatic signs of life (from red-eyed monkey ghosts to a sexually gifted catfish to the jungle insects whose chirps blanket the soundtrack).

At 39, Mr. Apichatpong is already a major figure in cinephile culture: a multiple award winner at Cannes (“Tropical Malady” won the Jury Prize here in 2005), the subject of a monograph published last year by the Austrian Film Museum and a polymath who moves fluidly between the worlds of art film and video art (“Uncle Boonmee” emerged from a multiplatform project called “Primitive,” consisting of interrelated installations and short films, and exhibited in Munich and Liverpool last year).
This is like another world for me… this is surreal,” Apichatpong told a packed hall after receiving the Palme from the head of the festival jury, US film-maker Tim Burton, who is likewise known for his fantastical storylines.
The 39-year-old Thai director thanked “the spirits… in Thailand that surrounded us” while making the film, a hypnotic meditation on the afterlife featuring a humanoid monkey ghost and a princess having sex with a catfish.

It was only the sixth Asian film to win the top prize at Cannes in seven decades of the festival, and the first for more than a decade. Five Asian entries had competed for the top prize this year.
Frenchman Mathieu Amalric won the best director prize for “On Tour”, about a troupe of buxom American stripteasers touring French seaside towns, while South Korean director Lee Chang-Dong’s “Poetry” scooped best screenplay.
Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s “A Screaming Man” took the jury prize, a mark of special recognition alongside the main awards. His was the first movie from sub-Saharan Africa in the running for the Palme in 13 years.
The prize-giving surprised many critics who had tipped Britain’s Mike Leigh for an award for his convincing family drama “Another Year”.

Garry Shandling Plastic Surgery, Mr. Pellicano’s version of theater of the absurd — his relentless and pointless cross-examination of his former employee, Tarita Virtue — was mercifully interrupted this morning for some star-studded testimony by comedian Garry Shandling. Mr. Shandling, dressed in a dark suit and crisp white shirt and looking quite dapper, gave the jury an up close glimpse at one of Mr. Pellicano’s alleged wiretapping victims. During his testimony, he seemed genuinely distressed that during his lawsuit with former manager, Brad Grey, his phones had been wiretapped, his character publicly assassinated and his reputation in town tarnished.
When Mr. Shandling was asked to state his occupation by prosecutor Kevin Lally, Mr. Shandling joked wryly, “That’s a bad sign. I’m a comedian.” The Judge then admonished him that he wasn’t a comedian today and Mr. Shandling responded by articulately, calmly and movingly telling the jury about how he’d been allegedly victimized by Mr. Pellicano and by his clients, Mr. Grey and Mr. Grey’s lawyer, Bertram Fields. He claimed then when he dared to accuse his long-time manager, Brad Grey, of stealing from him, Mr. Grey reacted by breaking off their eighteen-year relationship, hiring attorney Bert Fields and telling him that all further communication should be conducted through Mr. Fields. It was clear from his testimony that Mr. Shandling was devastated by the revelation that his longtime friend and manager, Grey, who’d he’d hired when Mr. Grey was just 21, had been stealing from him, making side deals and basically, screwing him over.
Mr. Shandling testified that even before he filed his lawsuit, he got a late night call from Mr. Grey in which the former manager, now head of Paramount Studios, “threatened me that if I kept looking into my own business, he’d make my life miserable.” Eventually, Mr. Shandling said that he hired counsel out of Washington and filed suit against Mr. Grey for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. Mr. Shandling told the court that he’d found out that Mr. Grey had been being paid as a producer of their show The Larry Sanders Show, and also taking commissions from Mr. Shandling’s fees for his writing and acting services. Mr. Shandling referred to Mr. Grey’s behavior as “illegal triple dipping” — being paid three times for the same services.
