SRINAGAR,KASHMIR NEWS: Indian troops shot dead six suspected militants in held Kashmir, police said Friday, as rebels blew up train tracks.
The militants were killed during a fierce gunbattle in Rajouri district on Thursday, a police spokesman said, adding that the fighting erupted after Indian troops launched a “cordon and search” operation.
Meanwhile, suspected militants blew up part of the railway connecting Baramulla town in the north with the southern town of Qazigund on Thursday, the spokesman said. The track was targeted near Kakapora village, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the Kashmiri summer capital of Srinagar.
“Two to three metres of railway track were damaged by the blast caused by an improvised explosive device (IED). The track is being restored shortly,” the spokesman said.

Syed Ali Gilani Says Ready to Talk to India
NEW DELHI: Veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani surprisingly deviated his longtime hard-line stand on Thursday when he hinted at holding bilateral talks with India.
Chief of his own faction of separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) is a firm supporter of Kashmir’s independence from Indian occupation and union of the disputed valley with Pakistan by Kashmiri’s right of self determination.
“Kashmir issue can be resolved by negotiations and Hurriyat Conference is ready to sit with India to resolve the longstanding dispute,” Gilani told the newsmen in New Delhi.
Gilani, 81, has always insisted on resolving the dispute by holding trilateral talks involving India, Pakistan and Kashmiris in the light of United Nations’ resolutions.
“Our party has adopted a mildness in its stance and is ready to talk to India besides the fact that India has not acted upon the U.N.’s resolutions,” he added.

According to Kashmir Media Service personnel of 48-Rashtriya Rifles during siege and search operations killed Mohammad Aslam and Saddam Hussain Bakerwal in Kandi Kalar area of the district.
On the other hand, at least a dozen persons were injured when Indian police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers resorted to baton charge and fired numerous tear smoke canisters to disperse protesters at Nowhatta, Gojwara, Rajouri Kadal, Brein-Nishat, Palhalan and Sopore areas.
“The CRPF personnel hurled stones and smashed windowpanes of several residential houses, which created panic among the residents,” said residents of Nowhatta and Palhalan.
Meanwhile, a constable of BSF 68th battalion, Lakhvinder Kumar, involved in the killing of 16-year-old, Zahid Farooq on February 5 at Brain-Nishat, said before the police that he was forced by his senior to shot at the teenager.
“The BSF Commandant, R K Birdi forced Lakhvinder Kumar to shoot thrice at Zahid. The constable has disclosed before the police that he was forced by his senior to shoot the teenager.

Strike, Security Lockdown Cripple Kashmir
SRINAGAR: A security lockdown and general strike crippled life in held Kashmir on Thursday, on the anniversary of the execution of a prominent Muslim leader.
The day-long strike was sponsored by Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in memory of founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in a New Delhi jail on February 11, 1984 for the murder of an intelligence officer. Bhat’s family and supporters say the charges were trumped up.
JKLF urged residents of the Muslim-majority state to hold pro-independence demonstrations on Thursday to commemorate Bhat and press New Delhi to return his remains. Bhat was buried in New Delhi’s Tihar jail.
Indian authorities sealed off neighbourhoods in most parts of Srinagar and deployed thousands of police and paramilitary to prevent protests.

SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism, martyred two more innocent Kashmiri youth in Kishtwar district.

According to Kashmir Media Service, personnel of 11-Rashtirya Rifles and Special Operations Group during siege and search operations killed Nissar Ahmed Shah and Saifullah at Merna-Pati Mahal in Kishtwar district. A house was also damaged in the operation.

Meanwhile, at least 125 people were injured in paramilitary forces brute action against pro-liberation demonstrators in Srinagar, Baramulla, Bandipore, Islamabad, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam areas.
Two persons including a young boy, Basit Rasheed was critically injured by a tear gas shell of police at Nawa Kadal in Srinagar. Locals in the areas said that police and paramilitary men had burst into homes to beat up the inmates and ransack household goods.

NEW DELHI: Kashmiris Observing Indian Republic Day As Black Day, Indian Paramilitary soldiers and police set up roadblocks and snipers took positions atop government buildings as India celebrated its national day Tuesday against the backdrop of a terror alert.
Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world are observing Indian Republic Day as Black Day.
India celebrates its Republic Day on Jan. 26 every year, but this year the security measures have been notched up following intelligence reports of a possible terror attack by militants.
Security has also been tightened at all major government telecommunications and power installations, with additional personnel deployed, police said. At least 15,000 paramilitary soldiers were deployed in and around the capital of New Delhi to ensure safety along the route of an annual parade _ the highlight of India’s Republic Day festivities, said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat.
In downtown New Delhi, hundreds of thousands of people gathered to witness the parade a showcase of Indian military and cultural pomp under the watchful eyes of armed police.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who is on a four-day official visit to India, was the chief guest at the parade, which included marching bands and contingents of soldiers and schoolchildren and an aeronautic display by air force planes.

SRINAGAR: Anti-India Protest Erupts in Kashmir, Hundreds of people protested in the streets of the Indian-held Kashmir on Sunday, accusing the army of killing a civilian during a search operation against suspected Muslim separatist.
A local resident, Shabir Ahmed, said army soldiers fatally shot Mushtaq Ahmed Mir, a local businessman, during Saturday’s search operation.
Col. Vineet Sood, an army officer, denied the protesters’ accusation and said Mir was hit by bullets when suspected rebels fired at Indian soldiers.
Chanting “Down with India” and “We want freedom” on Sunday, the protesters blocked a highway passing through Kalampora, a village 20 miles (35 kilometers) south of Srinagar, as they waited for authorities to hand over Mir’s body, said police officer Farooq Ahmed.
Srinagar is the main city in the Indian portion of Kashmir.
More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the conflict.

SRINAGAR: Indian troops killed two suspected militants in held Kashmir on Friday, a day after a nearly 24-hour siege at a hotel that left four people dead, police said.
The two, both from Lashkar-e-Toiba group, according to police were killed during a gunbattle in Andrusa village, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Srinagar.

SRINAGAR: An operation by Indian security forces to flush out two militants hold up in a hotel in here intensified on Thursday morning, even as the death toll in the major terror attack in the heart of the city rose to two with a civilian succumbing to injuries.
The operation launched by Indian forces to neutralise the militants in a local hotel in Lal Chowk which was suspended at around 11pm on Wednesdy was resumed at 0700 hours today, officials said.
Intermittent firing between the security forces and the militants is continuing, they said.
Meanwhile, one of the eight civilians injured in the incident on Wednesday succumbed to his wounds on Thursday morning in ahospital, the officials said.
One policeman was killed when militants hurled grenades at security forces in Lal Chowk area before they entering the hotel.

Blasts, Gunshots in Kashmir’s Summer Capital
SRINAGAR: Some militants on Wednesday hurled grenades and opened fire in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, police and witnesses said.
“Militants have hurled grenades and opened fire in Lal Chowk,” a police spokesman said, referring to Srinagar’s main commercial area.
“The attack has sparked panic in the busy market area,” he said, adding that one or two militants were reported have entered a hotel.
Television news channels broadcasting live footage from the scene reported that at least three security personnel and one journalist had been wounded in the violence.
Indian paramilitary troops and police have ringed the area.
An insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir has left more than 47,000 people dead since its eruption in 1989.
