The regents then could vote to leave the Big 12.

Osborne said a decision had not been finalized, and he declined to comment when asked whether the Big Ten had formally invited Nebraska to join.

Shawn Watson, offensive coordinator for Nebraska’s football team, said Osborne hadn’t given athletic department staff any indication.

Watson said Osborne met with the staff members last Friday to tell them about last week’s Big 12 meetings and to get a feel for what the staff thought about the Big 12 and Big Ten.

Since then, Watson said, Osborne hadn’t updated the staff.

The university issued a statement Wednesday night to counter news media reports saying regents had met informally Wednesday and already had agreed to a move to the Big Ten.

Officials, however, do want a quick resolution.

“The conjecture and all the intensity surrounding it is not positive,” regent Jim McClurg said of the impending decision. “Everybody needs to know and has a right to know. The calamity and opportunity that’s conjured up by not knowing sometimes exceeds reality, so I think it’s important to get a decision done.”

Should Nebraska leave, the dominoes could begin to fall within the Big 12. Texas President William C. Powers, athletics director DeLoss Dodds and women’s AD Chris Plonsky met with Longhorns coaches at the football stadium to address rumors about where the school could end up.

“The first message was that Texas’ top priority is to maintain its position in the Big 12 and to work to keep the Big 12 together,” said baseball coach Augie Garrido, who attended the meeting. “That is Texas’ first choice. But a lot is going on around us, and things are happening rapidly. They said that they are taking care of this and encouraged us to take care of what we do.

“If there was one overriding thing it was that, if Texas had to make a move, the decision would be based on the best interests of all its programs, not just football. That was the biggest message, I think.”

Messages left with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany were not returned. Big 12 spokesman Rob Carolla said Commissioner Dan Beebe would not comment on reports.

Sunday, Delany said the Big Ten could expand in phases while Michigan State President Lou Anna K. Simon said the league’s timetable might be altered. They had talked about deciding whether to expand by the fall.

The Big Ten announced late last year that it was considering adding at least one school, and possibly more, to allow for a lucrative league championship game in football and to broaden the reach of its cable television network.

McClurg said the Big 12 had been a good fit for Nebraska but the Big Ten, if it extended an invitation, could be better. It would greatly expand the school’s reach and could mean far more money for its athletic programs.

“We have to seriously evaluate any opportunity that comes our way,” McClurg said, “because everybody else is doing that.”

The university said Wednesday night that members of the regents’ executive committee had a conference call to discuss the agenda for Friday’s meeting.

“No action was taken during today’s conference call,” the statement said, “and none will be taken prior to Friday’s meeting.”

•U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said Wednesday that he and other lawmakers from states that could be adversely affected by wholesale conference realignment would look at ways to delay or prevent it.

Grassley said options could include asking the Justice Department to conduct a review of whether the changes violate federal antitrust laws — something Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, ranking member of the Senate antitrust subcommittee, brought up in a hearing Wednesday, Grassley said. The source could not guarantee Nebraska would acquire the necessary eight votes if it applied to join the Big Ten, though it seems unlikely Nebraska officials would leave the Big 12 without knowing the school would have a safe haven waiting.

The supply added it remained unclear whether or not Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany is going to be satisfied to stay at 12 teams or add two or even four much more

18aeb8b8f82 x600 cmt music awards 2010Music award shows such as the Country Music Television cable channel’s CMT Awards at 8 tonight exist chiefly to recognize distinguished works, typically of the recent past — and attract audiences with all the star power they can muster — rather than to provide a forum for the discovery of new music.

But tonight’s ceremony from Nashville highlighting viewers’ favorite country music videos of the past year also is giving a first look and listen to singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson’s ambitious new album “The Guitar Songs,” which doesn’t come out until September.98b12fc5a80xc2tl cmt music awards 2010
