Ice Box was the place horse of the Kentucky Derby and will have fresh legs and lungs heading into horse betting odds as he has not run since that first day of May. He will have the advantage of having hall of fame New York trainer Nick Zito leading him out of the paddock. Ice Box made his fame as the winner of the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park and is a 3-1 favorite at online racebooks.

First Dude was the place horse of the Preakness Stakes and led all the way to the three quarter pole before fighting hard to the wire. He has been in the money in 6 out of 7 starts with 1 win and is listed as a 7-2 favorite and a Belmont Stakes contender. Fly Down is the other Zito trained horse and is listed as a 9-2 087b42cf73t dude belmont stakes oddsfavorite at online racebooks. The great John Velazquez, a New York racing legend, will get the mount. Fly Down is coming off a win in the Grade 2 Dwyer at Belmont and will have plenty of familiarity with the track. He has 3 wins in 5 starts. Bet Ice Box or First Dude as favorites in betting odds as 2010 Belmont Stakes contenders for the 142nd Run for the Carnations with a 10% deposit bonus and 5% rebate.

Game on Dude is a 10-1 longshot in betting odds and his entry makes this race one that is being touted as the “Battle of the Dudes.” He last ran on May 3rd in the Grade 2 Lone Star and won by a quarter of a length. Hall of famer Bob Baffert is the trainer. Other big names include jockey Calvin Borel, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby and 3 of the last 4 runs for the roses overall. He will mount Dave in Dixie who is a 20-1 longshot in Belmont Stakes betting odds. Hall of fame New York legend Mike Smith will mount Drosselmeyer,We hate to beat a dead horse, no pun, but how can anyone look at the odds 2010 Belmont Stakes and not make a bet on Dixie Dave as 20-1 long shot (Bet $ 100 to win $ 2000) with Veteran jockey Calvin Borel in the forest? Borel loves to travel by rail and Dixie Dave drew the first inning. Not to mention, seems to have a gift Borel riding long shots in major races.

kevin skinnerOddballs and train wrecks have helped make NBC’s America’s Got Talent TV’s top-rated show for four straight summers. Though viewers can expect more of the same as Season 5 begins tonight (8 ET/PT), Talent judge Piers Morgan says the entertainment caliber will be the series’ best yet.

“I know these things get hyped, but we’ve already sent home several acts that would have made the finals in past years,” he says. “There’s more talent and more variety, and the talent is so good.”

This season’s pool of singers is especially strong, influenced, Morgan says, by Susan Boyle, the matronly Scot who became a YouTube sensation (100 million hits and counting) and recording star after appearing on the British version of Talent.

“She empowered people who wouldn’t have normally auditioned,” Morgan says.

CALENDAR: Check out what summer TV has to offer

Given the Talent’s $1 million grand prize and its variety format, the series has never lacked for starry-eyed hopefuls. In 12 cities, including Denver, Chicago, Orlando, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, executive producer Jason Raff saw contestants using turkey basters as musical instruments, male belly dancers, a kid who manipulates his eyebrows to music and a guy whose eyes remain open when he sneezes.kevin20swing kevin skinner

“After five years, it still amazes me what people will do,” says Raff, whose crew uncovered country singer Kevin Skinner, the Kentucky chicken wrangler who won the top prize last year.

Howie Mandel, who replaced David Hasselhoff as a judge, says he got a kick out of many of the tryouts.

“I love great talent, but I love bad talent, too,” he says. “I’ve been onstage for 32 years. I think I can identify the ‘it’ factor, the wow factor.”

Yet at times, there were surreal moments. “There’s a thin delineation between an act and real life,” Mandel says. “There was a girl chewing on a light bulb, her smile darkened by blood. It didn’t look real at first. I thought this must be an act. But then she was on her way to the hospital.”

Thousands of auditions prompted “a lot of ‘Oh my Lord’ moments,” says host Nick Cannon.

“It seemed a lot more dangerous this year,” he says. “There was tons of bleeding. Someone put a drill down their throat. Someone was chopping wood. People who do things and have the audacity to think this is worth $1 million.”

Deciding which acts to advance for midsummer live shows — the job of Morgan, Mandel and returning judge Sharon Osbourne— caused some friction that in itself may be entertaining.

“I had two missions: One, to find the next great talent. The other, seeing how far I could push Piers in taste,” Mandel says.

0a3dffdcabamirez hanley ramirez videoHanley Ramirez, the All-Star shortstop of the Florida Marlins, had a little problem recently with working to earn his stellar paycheck. According to Baseball Reference, Ramirez is in the middle of a six-year, $70 million contract, which apparently is not enough to motivate him to run after ground balls in the field, claims USA Today. Not only that, but “Han-Ram” (not to be confused with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ “Man-Ram,” Manny Ramirez) is refusing to apologize to Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez and teammates for his embarrassing on-field display.
Has Hanley Ramirez lost respect for his manager?

Gonzalez pulled the pouting superstar after the second inning of the game in which he was struck in the ankle by a line drive. He did this because Ramirez showed lackadaisical effort in attempting to retrieve the ball after the carom. If this website showed the same lack of drive when it comes to showing people how to get a personal loan, it would be out of business.

“It’s his team. He can do whatever he [expletive] wants,” Ramirez told the Palm Beach Post. But Gonzalez put it this way: “He got smoked with the ball in the ankle … but whether he’s hurt or not hurt, we felt like the effort wasn’t there that we wanted. There are 24 guys out there, busting their butts.” Hanley Ramirez may have been in pain, but he also quit on the play, according to Gonzalez. Thus, Gonzalez decided that his star needed to take the Marlins’ following game off, to stew in his juices and perhaps learn that he isn’t bigger than his team or the game.
‘We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls. They don’t apologize.’

That was the justification Hanley Ramirez gave the media — that a lot of people don’t give it their all to go after a ground ball. That level of personal inspiration and accountability is just underwhelming. Han-Ram’s ‘tude would fit right in at a luncheon with representatives of BP, Transocean and Haliburton, for all the avoidance that’s going on here. Not only does Hanley Ramirez not feel that he has to apologize, he claims that he respects everybody, even if he doesn’t “get the same respect back.” Clearly the ground ball to the ankle has affected the shortstop’s mind, because he isn’t showing respect to those teammates who gave their sweat and blood to make the Majors and he certainly isn’t showing respect to his team that wants to win or the fans that pay their hard-earned pennies to be able to attend games.

Hanley, you won’t get respect unless you show respect.

a2c5b5df34d paul rand paulDr. Rand Paul’s 10-length victory in the Kentucky GOP Senate Derby — a runaway victory worthy of Secretariat — is a sure sign that the anti-Obama, anti-federal, anti-incumbent Tea Party vote is going to be a central (if not THE central) story of the 2010 mid-term elections.

It’s up to President Obama and the Democrats to make libertarian thinking the issue in the fall — by proving that the philosophy, if actually implemented, would mean the end of Social Security, Medicare, student scholarships and even the Interstate Highway System.

Paul, named for libertarian radical writer Ayn Rand, favors shutting down the IRS, the Fed, the American military presence overseas, the Department of Education and much of the rest of the federal government.

Now, Kentucky (where I began my career) is not Berkeley. The anti-”revenuer” tradition is strong there. Sen. John McCain won the state over Barack Obama by 16 points. Still, a big win by a man with such views is remarkable. Paul, 47, a Bowling Green ophthalmologist who had never sought political office, started far behind the establishment favorite Grayson. But he surged ahead with a plain-spoken style and a platform rooted in small-government, anti-Washington thinking: term limits, a balanced-budget amendment, a requirement lawmakers read every word of legislation before it passes and a stipulation that laws spell out their constitutional underpinning.

“I think it’s towards people in power who are part of the problem,” Paul said on the Fox Business Network after the polls closed Tuesday. “They are worried about those who keep spending the money and seem to have no restrain. I think it’s an anti-big government message going on.”

Paul said he’s “not going to run away from the Tea Party message

Tornado, floods kill at least 20 in southern US

BILOXI: Violent thunderstorms unleashed tornados and flash floods over southern United States over the weekend killing at least 20 people and forcing the Kentucky governor to declare a state of emergency.

Governor Steve Beshear said Monday four people died in weather-related accidents in his state and requested federal assistance to deal with storm damage.

“I urge individuals who encounter high waters to use extreme caution and avoid unnecessary contact with flood waters if at all possible,” he said in a public alert.

In Mississippi, where tornados killed 10 people nine days ago, driving rains and more tornados tore through farming regions damaging homes and destroying crops.

“We have confirmed five people dead because of the current weather condition and five people with injuries,” Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Nikki Pressley told media.

triple crown winners

53f47ee8f7elmont triple crown winnersI am a Pollyanna. I believe I will live to see a Triple Crown. I state that every January 1 as I proclaim loudly to the heavens — “This IS the year of our Triple Crown winner.” So when I went to my first horse race, which was the Big Brown Belmont Stakes, I sat for an hour or more in the stands not wallowing in disappointment but pondering the Triple Crown trail. I wrote a story that night that said that in the future I would go to the Kentucky Derby to watch the beginning of a dream.
200x150cd triple crown winners
The Derby indeed is the beginning. Or is it? On Derby eve, I sat and stared at nine worn and somewhat tattered pieces of paper that have been in my purse for months. The carefully coded papers show that the dream began when the mares were bred or perhaps within hours of when the foals took their first steps. I carry them with me at all times, the horses nominated for the 2010 Triple Crown. They are my friends. I keep a hand-written ledger of the graded earnings of at least 50 horses as they vie for a Derby slot. And even though I know there are computer spreadsheets, I prefer my own somewhat archaic spread sheet of Derby contenders listing name, trainer, jockey(s), owners, and races won, sires, color and significant markings with comments like “drills bullet” or “can do mile and a quarter.”

I start early and watch their 2-year-old debuts. I don’t bet on the 2-year-olds, but I sure watch them. Any futurity gets a careful look. Breeder’s Cup, Santa Anita, Del Mar all get a once over. I read the bloggers, the twitters, the Facebook postings, the TVG message board. I peruse the trade magazines, watch the pertinent shows and find the video’s on YouTube or racing Web sites.

But most importantly, I take note of potential and talent. As the journey continues, it is with great sadness that some of the horses are off the trail because of injury or death. I actually broke down and cried when the big ol’ goofy Tiz Chrome, who had so much personality, had to be put down because of injury. Another horse that had caught my attention was the talented Take Control. Then there are the last-minute scratches that change the history of horse racing — the loss of horses like I Want Revenge and Eskendereya that leaves you wondering what might have been.

My 2010 Triple Crown list is color-coded by trainers and owners. On this Derby eve, I took note of the horses that raced Friday in the Kentucky Oaks or the undercard. I know that their connections had Derby aspirations (because who wouldn’t), but they made it to Churchill Downs on Derby weekend and that must be thrilling.

Three hundred sixty six horses initially nominated. Eight fillies, of which one actually made it to the Derby, and I smile with pride thinking of Devil May Care running with the boys. The trainers are a who’s who – Pletcher had 20, D. Wayne Lukas had 19, John Sadler had 16, Bob Baffert had 13, and the list cascades its way through the top trainers of the nation. The majority of the horses are from Kentucky, Florida and California. But take another look and there are horses from Illinois, Ireland, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, Indiana, Ohio and Texas. The Derby dream burns brightly from coast to coast.

For no matter who the winner is, the dreams take hold and fly. After the Derby, the Triple Crown potential will be tossed in the air. Naysayers will take hold of the dream and tell us there is no way that the Derby winner will be our Triple Crown champion. To that I say: Let us dreamers enjoy it for a couple hours or even a couple days after the Derby. It is the deginning of a dream. It is our road to the Triple Crown. Three hundred sixty six horses started on this journey, and now one of them will carry the Triple Crown torch.

Let’s enjoy the ride to the Preakness and the Belmont. It’s O.K. to be Pollyanna and believe that the ride can be joyful and historical. You never know –– this Derby winner could be the one. I enjoy the dream. Let’s enjoy the Triple Crown ride together.

In a “bucket list” moment, Julie June Stewart woke up at 4 a.m. and bought a ticket to the 2008 Belmont Stakes. She hasn’t stopped going to the races since — when she isn’t taking on a wildfire, hurricane or volcano as the nation’s leading expert in disaster airspace coordination.

a965ae4d53775087 twin spires The Kentucky Derby is lighting up the internet because the day is upon us and anybody who likes to make a bet or two usually enjoys the excitement of this particular race. Playing any game online can be fun but none can match the drama and natural power associated with the glamour of the horse racing industry. The Kentucky Derby is a feast for sore eyes as the fashion makes the entire affair a classy as it gets. Society watchers get as much out of the hats and dresses the women wear as they do the horses and the gambling. Online streaming video puts us all there in whatever we are wearing and at the same time the online betting is live. The cameras present us with the closest view possible what could not be better with instant replay. While your checking out the glamour and buzz part you are bound to notice there are spin off industries associated with the Derby like party supplies and hats. Through those you are bound to notice the Churchill Downs company Twin Spires is the official online wagering service provider. The exclusive Twin Spires Club allows you to redeem your player points for cash at any time. The photographers are cleaning their equipment for the May 1, 2010 running of the 136th Kentucky Derby to catch a glimpse of the contenders, unfortunately the weather could put a damper on the fashion part and could give any long shot horses a chance. The underdog horse Dublin has had very little experience in the mud. Jockeys aren’t thrilled with racing in the mud mainly because they tend to eat a lot of it. There is only one that doesn’t, the one out front. It will be a exciting race no matter what the conditions, now that online gambling on the race looks alright from at least the Twin Spires, Churchill Downs point of view. There are others many others onlinesuch as Bodog and SGB Global Racebook that offer great odds with online wagering you can shop around.
