BERLIN: A German citizen has been detained in Kenya on suspicion that he was planning to join Somali allies of al Qaeda, al Shabaab, a German newspaper reported on Tuesday.
A Kenyan official said an anti-terrorism unit had detained a man in the coastal resort town of Mombasa and arranged for him to be deported to Germany.
The Foreign Ministry in Berlin confirmed on Tuesday that a German citizen had been detained by Kenyan authorities. It declined to provide any further details.
The Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel reported the German man arrived in Mombasa as a tourist on Sep. 22.
The newspaper said Kenyan security officials launched a nationwide search for him after German authorities passed along a letter the man wrote to his mother saying he would never return alive. He was detained several days ago, the daily said.

Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot won the Boston Marathon on Monday in a course record time of two hours seven minutes and 14 seconds.
Cheruiyot, no relation to the four-time winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, eclipsed his namesake’s previous best by almost two minutes in perfect conditions on Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts.
The 21-year-old was locked in a duel with defending champion Deriba Merga of Ethiopia for much of the race.
Merga, the fourth-place finisher from the 2008 Olympic marathon in Beijing having led for many of the final miles, had run away from the 2009 Boston field for a comfortable win.
Twelve months on he saw Cheruiyot leave him in his wake after 23 miles, as the Kenyan found another gear, putting in a 4:36 24th mile and pulling away for a 91-second victory.
Tekeste Kebede caught compatriot Merga to claim second in 2:07:23 with the defending champion third in 2:08.39, just holding off US Olympian Ryan Hall by two seconds as he clocked 2:08:41 for the fastest time by an American in Boston Marathon history.
Earlier in the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Teyba Erkesso decimated the women’s elite field then held on for victory from fast-finishing Russian Tatanya Pushkareva.
The 27-year-old Erkesso had broken clear of her rivals after 15 miles and built a 90-second lead but at around 21 miles Erkesso began to hit trouble, taking two fluid bottles and then clutching her stomach and slowing her pace.
As Erkesso struggled through Brookline, fellow Boston debutante Pushkareva of Russia came into view and closed the Ethiopian’s lead to 35 seconds.
