KARACHI: Declaring continued support for the democratic government, Richard Holbrooke, the US envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, said his country is not in favor of martial law.
He expressed these views while addressing a news conference along with Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah after a visit to flood-hit areas in Makli and Thatta.
He said Pakistan is faced with numerous challenges due to floods. The United States, he said, will extend every possible help for the flood-hit people.
Out of Kerry Lugar Bill grant, $50 million will be spent on the rehabilitation of the flood victims, he added.
Rejecting reports about the presence of American troops in Pakistan, he said only US helicopters were sent to take part in rescue efforts.

LAHORE: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani Sunday said the government did not let National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) become an issue of ego and that nobody won or lost on this issue. Talking to media, the Premier said NRO is a thing of past, therefore, there is need for bringing it up anymore.

He said the government reinstated the Chief Justice and the deposed judiciary through an executive order.
He said Balochistan issue is not a new one, as the province has been facing deprivation for the last 62 years. We are also well aware of the terrorist activities in Balochistan and that exchange of views will be held during meeting with PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif, he added.
To a question, he said Kerry Lugar Bill is a US law and not Pakistan’s. “No compromise will be made on the national security and nuclear program of Pakistan,” he asserted, adding, it is up to us to either accept or reject the aid under KLB.
He said it was the decision of the judiciary to present NRO before the Parliament.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said he will share with the US administration concerns of Pakistan on the Kerry- Lugar bill that will provide US 1.5 billion dollars annually to Pakistan for next five years.

Talking to media before leaving on an unscheduled visit to the US, Qureshi said “I will speak for the people of Pakistan.”
The Foreign Minister, who was part of the consultations held at the President House on Saturday and participated by the President, the Prime Minister, the Chief of Army Staff and the DG ISI, said he has been mandated to carry forward the message from “all the stakeholders” to the US authorities.

Lahore, Pakistan:- Dream of economic progress can not without literacy rate, Shahbaz Sharif, ,Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that the dream of economic progress can not be materialized without increasing literacy rate and promotion of technical education. Therefore, he said, Punjab government is giving top priority to the promotion of quality education in the province. He said that a skilled workforce can not only play its role in the rapid progress of the country but can also earn foreign exchange. He said that TEVTA has been made an active and vibrant institution for the promotion of technical education in the province while a Board of Management has also been established for changing the syllabus of technical institutions according to the market needs. He said that an amount of Rs.3.2 billion is being spent during the current fiscal year on various development programmes of TEVTA. He also announced financial assistance of Rs.5 crore for Lahore Institute of Technical Education (LITE) which is being managed by Pakistan Army.
He was addressing certificate distribution ceremony of LITE, here today. Corps Commander Lahore and Chairman LITE Lt. Gen. Ijaz Ahmad Bakhshi, Chairman NAVTEC and high ranking officers were also present on the occasion. The Chief Minister said that only those nations have made progress which have given top priority to education and equipped the new generation with the latest knowledge. Citing the example of China, Japan, Singapore and other countries, the Chief Minister said that these countries have made rapid progress by promoting science and technology. He said that China got independence two years after the creation of Pakistan and became a super power through the hard work and dedication of its people. He said that Pakistan is rich in natural resources and human talent and it can also make rapid progress by adopting the principle of hard work, honesty and commitment. He said that no nation can prosper with foreign assistance and the habit of reliance on others will have to be shed as the aim of economic prosperity and genuine independence can only be achieved by remaining within available resources and working tirelessly. He said that we value our relations with the friendly countries and are fully aware of the importance of their help in development process. He said that we want good relations with US and Britain and other countries and desire modern technology and technical expertise from these countries but we will not compromise on our national interests and not accept foreign assistance at the cost of national pride. He said that that no country can achieve true independence without attaining economic freedom and we will have to achieve this goal by adopting simplicity and learning to live within our resources. He said that we will have to change our failures of the last 63 years into successes and move ahead with courage and determination. He said that our manpower is our asset and we can also join the rank of developed countries by imparting it technical and vocational skills. He lauded the efforts of Pakistan Army in imparting technical education to the youth besides defence of the country. He said that setting up of LITE is a commendable step. He congratulated the students completing various courses and appreciated the measures taken by Corps Commander Lt. General Ijaz Ahmad Bakhshi for further improving the performance of LITE. He also announced a grant of five crore rupees for LITE.
Corps Commander Lahore and Chairman LITE Lt. Gen. Ijaz Ahmad Bakhshi while addressing the ceremony said that imparting of technical education to unemployed youth to make them good citizen of the society is our national and moral duty and LITE has been established for this purpose. He said that LITE has a great significance due to its performance and is promoting national integrity besides providing employment to the poor and educated youth. He said that performance of LITE is highly satisfactory and 2600 people are serving in various departments after getting technical education from this institution. Chairman NAVTEC also addressed the ceremony and lauded the measures taken by Punjab Chief Minister for the promotion of education in the province. Later, Chief Minister and Corps Commander awarded degrees to the students.

Kerry Lugar Bill against Pak interests, PML-N’s Nisar
Kerry Lugar Bill against Pak interests, PML-N’s Nisar, ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday affirmed that the entire troubles of the country could not be addressed unless the trial of former president Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution.

Addressing the National Assembly here, PML-N’s Nisar termed approval of Kerry Lugar Bill by the US congress as against the interest and self-respect of Pakistan.
He demanded presenting of the bill in NA for a detailed discussion on it.
Earlier, British Home Secretary Alan Johnson and Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth held joint meetings with Nisar at Punjab House today.
Reportedly, UK secretaries, during the meeting, assured their government is mulling over introduction of a new visa system for Pakistan.
The meeting was also attended by Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal and UK High Commissioner Robert Brinkley.
Following the meeting, Chaudhry Nisar told media UK government assured that their government is in serious deliberation to make visa policy better for Pakistanis especially for students while the visa waiting time will again be reduced to 15 days.

NEW YORK: The US Senate Thursday unanimously passed the Kerry- Lugar bill, authorizing $ one and half billion in economic assistance for Pakistan annually over five years, President Barack Obama announced here at a major moot expressing economic support for Pakistan.
Co-chairing Friends of Pakistan Summit with President Asif Ali Zardari and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the U.S. President reaffirmd his administration’s commitment to economic cooperation with Pakistan.
The US House of Representative is now expected to pass the bipartisan measure shortly, after which it will be sent to President Obama’s desk for his signatures.
