LOS ANGELES: A Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, known professionally as Shakira is celebratingher birthday today (Thursday).

Shakira was born February 2, 1977). Born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira began performing in school, demonstrating her vocal ability with rock and roll, Latin and Arabic influences with her own original twist on belly dancing.

Shakira emerged in the music scene of Colombia and Latin America in the early 1990s. Shakira is a native Spanish speaker and also speaks fluent English and Portuguese as well as some Italian, French, Catalan and Arabic.

After a poor commercial reception with local producers on her first two albums, and being little-known outside Colombia, Shakira decided to produce her own brand of music.

In 1995 she released Pies Descalzos, which brought her great fame in Latin America and Spain, and her 1998 album ‘Dónde Están los Ladrones’ was a critical success selling over 7 million copies worldwide.

In 2001, aided by the worldwide success of her first English single “Whenever, Wherever” that became the best selling single of 2002, she broke through into the English-speaking world with the release of Laundry Service, which sold over 13 million copies worldwide.

Four years later, Shakira released two album projects called Fijación Oral Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation Vol. 2. Both reinforced her success, particularly with the best selling song of the 2000s, “Hips Don’t Lie”.

In 1995, Shakira founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation. It is a Colombian charity with special schools for poor children all around Colombia. During her career, Shakira has performed at a large number of benefit concerts. Among the most famous are the Live 8 benefit concert in July 2005, the Live Earth concert, Hamburg where she headlined the show, as well as the “Clinton Global Initiative” created by former US President Bill Clinton.

She was also invited to the Oval Office by President Barack Obama in February 2010 to discuss early childhood development.

She has won two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, twelve Billboard Latin Music Awards  and has been Golden Globe-nominated.

She is also the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, and the second most successful female Latin singer behind Gloria Estefan, having sold over 70 million albums worldwide.

Her U.S. album sales stand at 9.9 million. In the fall of 2009, Shakira released her sixth studio album She Wolf worldwide gaining a lot of critical praise for her eccentricity and writing skills. The album sold roughly 2 million copies around the world.

Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)”, was chosen as the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The song has received generally positive critical reception, and has become a worldwide smash hit and the biggest selling World Cup song of all time.

On YouTube, the English version of the music video is the 4th most watched video of all time with over 441 million views. When she released her seventh studio album, the bilingual Sale el Sol in October 2010, she gained back her Latin following, which Shakira described as being the main goal for the album.

The album has sold over 2 million copies worldwide. Since 2009, Shakira’s musical career suffered from a strained relationship with her label Epic Records, which resulted in lack of promotion and investment from Epic Records towards her two latter studio albums; She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010). Brazil’s First Female President Celebrates Victory

SAO PAULO: A former Marxist guerrilla who was tortured and imprisoned during Brazil’s long dictatorship was elected Sunday as president of Latin America’s biggest nation, a country on an economic and political rise.

c2a819fb78sident.jpg Brazil’s First Female President Celebrates VictoryA statement from the Supreme Electoral Court, which oversees elections, said governing party candidate Dilma Rousseff won the election. When she takes office Jan. 1, she will be Brazil’s first female leader.

With nearly 95 percent of the ballots counted, Rousseff had 55.6 percent compared to 44.4 percent for her centrist rival, Jose Serra, the electoral court said.

Rousseff, the hand-chosen candidate of wildly popular President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, won by cementing her image to Silva’s, whose policies she promised to continue.

She will lead a nation on the rise, a country that will host the 2014 World Cup and that is expected to be the globe’s fifth-largest economy by the time it hosts the 2016 Summer Olympics. It has also recently discovered huge oil reserves off its coast.

Rousseff was already speaking like a president-elect when she cast her vote Sunday morning.

”Starting tomorrow we begin a new stage of democracy,” Rousseff, 62, said in the southern city of Porto Alegre, where she cast her vote. ”I will rule for everyone, speak with all Brazilians, without exception.”

Silva used his 80 percent approval ratings to campaign incessantly for Rousseff, his former chief of staff and political protege. She never has held elected office and lacks the charisma that transformed Silva from a one-time shoeshine boy into one of the globe’s most popular leaders.

Silva was barred by the constitution from running for a third consecutive four-year term. He has batted down chatter in Brazil’s press that he is setting himself up for a new run at the presidency in 2014, which would be legal.

Despite Rousseff’s win, many voters don’t want ”Lula,” as he is popularly known, to go away.

“If Lula ran for president 10 times, I would vote for him 10 times,” said Marisa Santos, a 43-year-old selling her homemade jewelry on a Sao Paulo street. “I’m voting for Dilma, of course, but the truth is it will still be Lula who will lead us.”

Brazil’s first female president Rousseff faces fiscal and currency challenges

RIODEJANERO: The same economic boom and free spending that propelled Dilma Rousseff to Brazil’s presidency could become the biggest source of trouble during her first year at the helm of Latin America’s largest economy.

Rousseff will have to tighten the purse of a government whose finances deteriorated this election year, but avoid choking off the raid growth that has lifted millions of people out of poverty.

She won a runoff election on Sunday with 56 percent of the vote, largely due to the economic successes of her mentor, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

A former leftist militant who never before had run for elected office, Rousseff will have to manage the consequences of that growth — massive capital inflows which have lifted the real currency to two-year highs, hurting exporters in the commodities powerhouse.

Argentina has a clean sheet on its confrontations with African teams, having won 75% of the matches played against them.

Two years ago these two teams took on each other to define Beijing’s Olympic Games, in which Argentina claimed the gold medal. This was a response to the Atlanta ‘96 match which ended with glory for Nigeria.

That time, Angel Di Maria scored the winning goal, something he’ll be looking forward to repeating for this world’s debut.

Critically acclaimed “Mad Men” actress Jones hosted Oceana’s World Oceans Day with GQ magazine on Tuesday evening, at the swanky Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles.

We took note of her cute BCBG aquamarine cocktail dress a the event — and then again the next day at 10:30 a.m. getting out of a taxi at her house.

That had to be one heck of an Oceans party, attended by the likes of David Arquette, Jakob Dylan and GQ Vice President and Publisher Peter Hunsinger.

We’d speculate, but it’s much more fun when you do it for us! Vote in our January Jones dress poll below.January was not cited or arrested, but her car was impounded and police have launched an investigation. No alcohol or drugs were involved.january jones 01 january jones

As for why celebrity gossip media might have been trying so hard to get a shot of Jones, it may have something to do with a Walk of Shame.

Or more accurately, a Cab Ride of Shame. Photos of her arriving home in the same dress she wore the night before were all over the Internet.748f7340c02 po01 january jones

Jones said paparazzi were following her and she lost control of her car. She says she left her license and walked a block home and called 911.

There will not be a hit-and-run investigation and cops say they did not administer a field sobriety test because there was no evidence of alcohol

UN rift widens over Brazil-Turkey deal with Iran

May 27, 2010 by

BRASILIA: A bitter rift between the world”s top powers led by the United States and emerging nations Brazil and Turkey widened Thursday as differences over how to tackle Iran”s suspect nuclear program erupted into sharp exchanges.

Turkey accused critics of a deal brokered with Iran last week for a nuclear fuel swap of being “envious” of the “diplomatic success” it represented — in an implicit swipe at the United States.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged “very serious disagreements” with Brazil over its insistence that the deal it helped to draw up be considered before a US push for new UN sanctions against Iran is decided.

The row threatens to split the UN Security Council, on which the United States sits as a permanent, veto-wielding member alongside temporary members Brazil and Turkey.

It also highlighted the growing assertiveness of Brazil, Latin America”s biggest economy, and NATO member Turkey in carving out their own diplomatic tracks independently of the United States.

The United States accuses Iran of trying to build nuclear weapons under the cover of its atomic energy program, something Tehran denies.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking in a joint media conference in Brasilia with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, slammed detractors of the May 17 deal they worked out with Tehran.

“The countries criticizing this accord are envious. Because Brazil and Turkey brokered and pulled off a diplomatic success that other countries had been negotiating without result for many years,” he said.

He stated that Brazil and Turkey had “assumed the responsibility” that went with their seats on the UN Security Council.
