Lockheed Fire, A wildfire that has grown to 2,300 acres has forced the evacuation of about 600 residents in the Bonny Doon area of Santa Cruz County, authorities said today.
Some 250 structures and 25 businesses are threatened by the blaze, dubbed the Lockheed Fire, authorities said. The fire is burning along a steep area of timber and heavy brush, and access to fight the blaze is limited, said Dinah Phillips, a county spokeswoman.
More than 300 firefighters are battling the blaze, including strike teams from throughout the Bay Area and planes that are fighting the fire from above.
The fire began at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday near Bonny Doon, an isolated community three miles up in the hills from Highway 1.
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered along Last Chance Road, Swanton Road, Warrella Truck Trail and Rancho del Oso. An evacuation center has been set up at the Pacific School in Davenport, and the American Red Cross has established a shelter at Vintage Church.
In June 2008, the Martin Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Bonny Doon burned 520 acres, destroying three residences and eight outbuildings and damaging two others. The cost of the fire surpassed $5.4 million.

Paul leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, which includes not only his recording innovations and techniques, inventions (including the eight-track), music catalog – and of course his eponymous solid body electric guitar. He was an influence not only on casual musicians, but also on those commonly regarded as rock gods in their own right: Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, and many others. In fact, as Paul’s Hall of Fame bio notes, Jimmy Page said that “He’s the man who started everything. He’s just a genius.” Eddie Van Halen shared the sentiment: “Without the things you’ve done, I wouldn’t be able to do half the things I do.”
The name Les Paul may as well be synonymous with rock music, and he will be missed.
