We took a few minutes today on our trip home from Sault Ste. Marie to pull off Interstate 75 just north of the Mackinac Bridge to view up close this engineering marvel. I think I have traveled over the bridge fifteen times in my life, but I never really paused to study the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere. This bridge carried over four million vehicles per year on journeys between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
On the north shore of the Straits of Mackinac just before the bridge’s toll booth there is a visitor center with some detailed information on the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Five workers died during the construction of the 5-mile-long causeway and bridge, and the $99 million construction cost of the bridge – which opened in 1957 – would translate into over $700 million in inflation-adjusted U.S. dollars today.

Sharon Rocha has every right to be outraged that Scott Peterson has the ability to blog while in prison on death row (“Laci Peterson’s Mom Outraged Over Son-In-Law’s Blog”). In fact, every American should be outraged! When you are convicted of murdering your wife and unborn son, you should lose your right to communicate with the outside world, family blog included.
In order to have an orderly society where taking responsibility for your actions is paramount, we as Americans must alter the manner in which we treat our criminals: The amount of tax dollars we waste on feeding, clothing, educating, and attempting to rehabilitate people who have committed horrendous crimes is ludicrous. When a person is convicted of a violent crime, as Scott Peterson was, he/she should be put to death in a timely fashion.

Ashton Kutcher is known for his Twitter account and to not be out done by his wife Demi Moore, who had tweeted a pic of her and Dave on her appearance on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman last month decided to give Letterman a lesson on social networking on the show Thursday night. Of course the look on Dave’s face is priceless when Kutcher decides to sit in his lap and shoot a picture of himself and the comedian on his phone. Now going back to Twitter, you find that the sitting on the host’s lap was premeditated.
Before arriving at the show, Kutcher Tweeted: “Headed to see Dave. I’m gonna try to sit on his lap like @mrskutcher did.”
In case you missed it here is the clip… do note that Letterman really doesn’t let Ashton (who spends plenty of time messing with his Iphone) get a word in edgewise. Thank goodness Letterman doesn’t have a Twitter account that he uses on a regular basis, because reading about dropping eggs and having his “fly down again” could get pretty old.

Care Bears on Fire played the first night of CMJ at the Bowery Ballroom. Although girls have a lot of pop, no blow is not enough. Not sure if it ever taken seriously as a pop / punk / rock, or simply as a children’s band. I mean, they did it on Letterman recently. And they are a hell of a lot better than it ever was Kittie (Sorry Spiewak). Anyway, here are a couple of pictures below (thanks to Meimi Yeung).

David Letterman Extortion

David Letterman Extortion, So, here they are: David Letterman’s remarks on how he had “creepy” sex with an indeterminate amount of female staffers and was then extorted. Considering Letterman has long used affairs as punchlines, should we run him out of town?
During his tenure at the Late Show, Letterman’s made mad bank on using public figures and their public disgraces as his “comedic” inspiration. There could be a book of his Clinton-inspired knee-slappers, like this one, “No move ever goes smoothly. Today Clinton’s brand new desk arrived. He had to send it back, apparently not enough head room.” Oh, ha! Monica Lewinsky blew Clinton while he was president. And now we learn that Letterman banged his lady underlings.
Letterman’s admission makes us — and Howard Kurtz, sort of — wonder whether Letterman, who also admitted he’ll do anything to protect his job, should be shamed as he’s shamed others.
He’s a famous, rich and, to some, charming man — the fact that he screwed staffers should raise serious ethical questions, like “Did he use his power and influence to take advantage of the women?” Even if he didn’t do so intentionally, it’s certainly possible that’s the case and he’s just as guilty as those he’s lampooned. But perhaps we should give him some wiggle room here.
Although we’re not in awe of how he handled this, we’re surprisingly impressed by the amount of self-skewering he mustered while discussing the potential for embarrassment. That impression, however, was rapidly shattered when he revealed his “true” intentions: protect these women — oh, and his family, self and, yes, job.
The entire thing came off as more of a relatively humorous, if not laudatory, apology than a phony, manufactured plea for forgiveness, but isn’t the former better than the latter, especially since he’s been calling the kettle black this whole time? The audience certainly thinks so: they clapped and laughed and lapped up the entire bit.

Obama on Letterman Video
Obama on Letterman Video, Add this one to the presidential collection: the heart-shaped potato.
By the time Barack Obama came on stage to the taping of the “Late Show” on Monday, host David Letterman had offered up 10 reasons why in the world the president had agreed to do it.
Among Letterman’s theories: Obama said yes without thinking about it, or as Letterman put it, “Like Bush did with Iraq.”
But Obama had other ideas. It turns out he was listening when Letterman had bantered with a woman in the audience who brought — yes — a potato in the shape of a heart to the show.
