98-year-old woman earns Judo’s highest-degree black belt
Just two years before her 100th birthday, Sensei Keiko Fukuda has become the first woman to achieve a tenth-degree black beltâthe highest rank in the martial art and combat sport Judo. Fukuda is now one of only four living people who ve earned the tenth-degree (or dan) black belt. To put the accomplishment into better perspective, throughout history, only sixteen people have ever achieved this honor.
Fukuda began practicing Judo in 1935 and is the sole surviving student of its founder, Kano Jiguro. At her teacher s urging, she learned English to help spread Judo internationally.
During a time when getting married, building a family, and becoming a housewife was the norm, Fukudo bucked tradition, opting out of marriage to pursue the martial art.
“All I did was Judo…this was my marriage,”" Fukudo reflected tearfully to the San Francisco Chronicle. “”This is when my life destiny was set. I just never imagined how long this road would be.”"
She described the Jiguroâs school, known as the Kodokan, as “”old-fashioned and sexist about belts and ranks.”" In fact, an edict that prevented women from achieving any higher than a fifth-degree black belt kept Fukuda at that level for thirty years. She was finally elevated to sixth dan in 1972 when a woman s division was created.
Fukodo said she approached Judo and her life with the intent to “”be gentle, kind and beautiful, yet firm and strong, both mentally and physically.”" Fukuda says this kind of beauty is decidedly not external. “”A compassionate soul is inner beauty,”" she explained to the paper. “”I believe this is true beauty…All my life this has been my dream.”"

Priyanka’s sadistic wife-beating husband – Irrfan Khan
The cat is out of the bag. Irrfan may seem to be a gentle poet in Saat Khoon Maaf who woos and wins Priyanka Chopra’s love in the pristine landscape of Kashmir. But within the sensitive skin lies the character of a sadistic animal. At home, Irrfan is shown to repeatedly beat up his wife Priyanka before having sex with her.

Says a source, “The character is incontrovertibly modelled on this gentle romantic superstar of yesteryears. He was a suave soft spoken ladies man in public. He swept the teen heart-throb of his times off her feet (stealing her away from her then-boyfriend).But after marriage her life turned into a living hell. In real life she walked out on the marriage. In the film Priyanka slaughters Irrfan after one wacking too many.”
The most traumatic experience of Priyanka Chopra’s career as an actress was getting beaten up repeatedly by Irrfan Khan. Method director that he is, Vishal Bhardwaj wanted the real thing. The blows raining on Priyanka are not make believe.
Irrfan plays a poet and a pervert. For the public, he’s a gentle Kashmiri poet reciting beautifully penned words. In private, he is a brute and an animal who gets sexually excited by beating up his wife Priyanka Chopra.
Says a source from the film, “Vishal was very clear about the violence. He warned Priyanka that the slaps kicks and punches would be real. And she was all for it. But when it came to the crunch she couldn’t help saying, ‘Ouch!’ every time a blow fell on her.”
By the time Priyanka finished shooting her scenes with Irrfan, she had welters bruises and wounds to show for her commitment to the role.
Apparently, Irrfan was not the least inhibited by the violence.
Says the source, “She was given real blows, no fake ones. There were torn lips and swollen cheeks throughout without any makeup. Once, only once, Priyanka got a chance to get her own back. In one sequence her character gives Irrfan a tight slap back. Priyanka gave it her best shot, with the director’s permission. Vishal Bhardwaj told her to slap Irrfan real and hard. ‘He’s from the NSD. He knows about method acting.’ But Irrfan got scared. He told Priyanka to slap him with only four fingers.”
This too is a scene that could be straight out of the ex-superstar’s marriage. Apparently, after every bout of violence he would fear getting some of it back from his wife.
When contacted, Irrfan refrained from comment. He has been briefed by Vishal Bhardwaj to keep mum about his character’s dark violent secret.
Finally after some persuasion Irrfan spoke about his character. Said the actor, “To reduce my character to a wife-beater would be to take away from his complexities. This is a man, a poet in a state of constant turmoil. He is forever seeking something; he knows not what. When he finds Priyanka’s character, he feels his search has ended. But he realizes that he has embarked on another journey after marriage. In his endeavour to find himself, he ends up doing things he doesn’t understand. He doesn’t know why he’s doing what he’s doing.”
Lisa Ray to open yoga studio in Toronto

Marriage seems far away from Lisa Ray’s mind. Speaking exclusively, Lisa reveals she has big career plans this year including the opening of a Yoga studio in Toronto for which, work is on full-throttle at the moment.
Yoga, it must be mentioned, provided Lisa with tremendous emotional spiritual and physical solace during her prolonged illness and recovery last year. And now Lisa is ready to share her Yoga gyan with the world.
Lisa says there’s no room for marriage in her life right now. “This news has come completely out of left field. It was most unexpected! I’d love to clarify matters as I’m working on projects in India and don’t want my work colleagues out in India to get the impression that I’m not committed to my projects and work out there.”
Ask her about the status of her relationship with her faithful companion Brett Wilson and Lisa says, “The point is, marriage is not on the cards. The news that came out is unfounded. I am very good friends with Brett and I described marriage as an ‘imperfect institution’ to make light of the situation, not to make light of marriage.”
Lisa is excited about her projects this year. “I’m opening a hot yoga studio here in Brampton, Canada. There’s so much to look forward to this year. Every day is a blessing. I was recently at the Toronto Film Critics Association dinner where I was surrounded with love and compliments on my ‘Second Coming’ (the near-death illness). I’m working on a kick-ass series for TLC. Finalising some film projects soon. Involved in another momentous stem-cell event in Toronto. Life is grand. I’m so blessed to live and work in two different worlds.”
Arizona shooting accused pleads not guilty
ARIZONA: Jared Lee Loughner, the young assailant in the deadly January 8 mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona has pleaded not guilty to three charges of murder related to the attempt on the life of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and two of her aides, reports said on Monday.
As many as six people were killed and 13 injured including Giffords when Loughner went berserk during an open-invitation meeting at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, arranged by Giffords. Loughner is believed to have nursed a grudge against Giffords after she had apparently failed to satisfactorily answer a question put to her by the youngman earlier.
Among those killed in cold blood were a Federal Judge and nine-year old Christina Taylor Green, who was born on 9/11, when the World Trade Center in New York was targeted.
Loughner appeared in the court of U.S. District Judge Larry A. Burns of San Diego accompanied by his counsel Judy Clarke. The defense did not raise any objection when prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Wallace Kleindienst, requested that court proceedings be moved to Tucson.
According to reports, the defendant clad in a bright orange prison jumpsuit and wearing glasses barely uttered a word during the hearing but remained smiling throughout the entire hearing process. He could be arraigned in both state and federal courts which could invite the death penalty if found guilty.
On being asked by the trial judge whether she had any real concerns regarding Loughner”s ability to grasp the trial proceedings, Clarke said she was not raising any issues at the moment. Also, some 25 tapes containing data downloaded from the defendant”s personal computer were handed over to the defense counsel by the prosecution.
Giffords, 40, has since been moved to a rehabilitation center in Houston as she proceeds on the path to recovery.

Oprah Winfrey Shares Her Wisdom

TrendPK.com: Oprah Winfrey has been on television for over 25 years, but made her first appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour as the creator of OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network. Her mandate for programs is to encourage people, with the philosophy sheâs brought to The Oprah Winfrey Show over the decades.
âAfter The Color Purple, I learned that God can dream a bigger dream for you than you can dream for yourself,â Winfrey said. âI try to live in that space that is the universeâs dream for me, the bigger dream. As you heard me say to Barbara Walters, my prayer is: use me. I see myself really as a messenger for a message that is greater than myself. The message is: You can. You can. You can. You can do and you can be and you can grow and it can get better and it doesnât matter where you were born or who your mother was or how many doctorate degrees you did have or your family had or your father had. It doesnât matter. You can. You can do.â
Your OWN Show has contestants competing to get their own show on OWN. Will it be the spiritual talk show or Zach Annerâs travel show for people in wheelchairs? Our America with Lisa Ling explores issues of transgenders, drug addicts and sex offender camps in the forest.
âMy goal in my lifetime is to really help people to understand that weâre all as human beings to evolve,â Winfrey continued. âSo the evolving of consciousness is really what Iâm about but Iâm not telling people thatâs what it is. All of us are here to become more of who we are, of who you really were born to be. Every single one of us in this room has that. That is how we are all equal, because I was born to be who the creator intended, whether you believe in the creator or not. Whatever you believe put you here, you were born to perform the highest expression of that coming. That is my goal as my personal self and it is also my goal to help other people see that in themselves. I fully understand that this platform that I have been given is a gift.â
Sheâs not preaching about OWN though. Part of the philosophy is to just BE positive, not to force positivity on people. âThe whole network is about encouraging people, for the most part, to live with an open heart. Itâs about opening yourself to all that is possible for you and extending yourself in grace and gratitude for what you have. There is a spiritual thread to it. I donât think itâs wise for us to go around announcing weâre the spiritual channel. There are many different ways to assert the nature of what is good without calling it good TV, without calling it spiritual, labeling it that.â
Winfrey has learned her lesson. Thereâs no doubt that she has changed peopleâs lives, both hands on and just through broadcasting issues on her show. She canât take credit for that though.
âOne of the things that makes me not anxious but accepting the challenge at this time is that Iâve learned a lot from my mistakes. Being on the air for the past 25 years, Iâve learned a lot about myself, like all of us and our jobs. You learn from what worked and what didnât work. I made a big mistake about 10-12 years ago of calling what we were doing on television âChange Your Life TV.â That came out of a natural organic process for me, meaning that whenever I would meet people, people would always say to me, âOprah, you changed my life.â I started to try to hear that and not just dismiss it. I said, âWhat actually changed in your life?â People would tell me the various things. âI went back to school, got a degree. I stopped beating my kids because of you. I left a bad marriage. I was abused.â I came back to my team and said maybe thereâs something to this Change Your Life thing. We started a new season calling it that and felt immediately the pushback from some of you probably in this room.â
One of the television critics actually put it in perspective for Winfrey. âI appreciate good criticism. I donât appreciate criticism thatâs just done from somebody who hasnât done their research and isnât looking at it from an objective analytical point of view. My thing is if youâre going to tell the story, tell the whole story. I read one critic that did a really nice analysis of who was I to try to change somebodyâs life. In reading that passage, I thought thereâs some truth to that. Who am I to say that Iâm actually changing your life? What I realized was thatâs not for me to say. Thatâs for somebody else to say. Thatâs a big lesson I learned. Donât go around telling people youâre going to change their lives. Let them tell you if thatâs what their experience was. Having learned that lesson, Iâm moving forward now and wanting to create television that we feel is meaningful and mindful.â
Winfrey wonât buy into the polarizing television of extreme news and reality TV debauchery. OWN could stand out in the cable listings. âAll the divisions between the right and left and red and blue, most people are in the middle. Most people are really good. Most people are really, really good. When I started The Oprah Winfrey Show and we were going to be syndicated around the country, I felt pretty confident that show would be successful. Being in this space right now, I know that going forward, itâs really only going to get better and there are enough people, thereâs a critical mass of people, we havenât found them all, who want something better, who want better programming. I know thatâs true. I see them every day.â

Every year, people around the world resolve to improve their lives and reform bad habits as the New Year rolls in.
The ensuing 365 days yield varying degrees of success; some achieve their goals, some falter, while others canât even recall what their resolutions were to being with. Famous people are no different. Some said they donât believe in New Yearâs resolutions; hereâs what the others had to say:
Annie Khalid â Singer : Family comes first
2010: My New Yearâs resolution for 2010âŚI canât even remember what it was! Iâm a bit of a procrastinator so I always start something and never finish it off.
2011: I have some really simple New Yearâs resolutions. One of them is to take my brother on a holiday; I planned it last year but couldnât do it simply because I was so tied up with many different things. My 19-year-old brother is the love of my life, I love him to death and I just want to spend some time with him because I hardly get to see him. This year I want to take him somewhere really fantastic so thatâs definitely something I want to do. Also want to stay fit and spend as much time with my mum and dad.
Hammad Khan â Director : Grow bigger and better
2010: I made a resolution to complete my first film and get it out into the world. I am grateful that I achieved that goal.
2011: To grow as a human being and a filmmaker by breaking free of the comfort zones of the mind and heart. In other words, to embark on the second journey.
Natasha Saleem â vj/actress : Learn and travel
2010: I donât think I made one. I was too busy feeling happy and grateful.
2011: To learn a foreign language and then travel to that country, or vice versa; Iâm not picky that way.
Sajid Ghafoor â musician : Going with the flow
2010: My New Yearâs resolution for 2010 was not to have any resolution and just to go with the flow of things and see how it works.
2011: For this year I plan to change a few things I am not happy with and leave the rest as it is. Going with the flow certainly did help. Happy New Year to everyone reading this!
Juggan Kazim â model/actress : Get more sleep!
2010: My resolution for the year 2010 was to work harder and get myself to a place where I can make a decent amount of money without much work. I believe I have achieved my goal for 2010.
2011: I would like to get more sleep. Between my son and work, I have no time to breathe. I want to get ample sleep so I can feel like a human being again.
Ayesha Toor â model, actress : Wants to be a millionaire!
2010: I planned to be a multi-billionaire, but I didnât do anything to achieve it.
2011: This time I want to be a millionaire at least, but havenât set any goals yet for achieving it.
Abbas Ali Khan â musician : Fight against fears
2010: I did not have any resolutions for 2010.
2011: I will fight my fears, get in the music scene again, grow my animation studio and be optimistic.
Sanam Agha â Fashion designer : All work and no play
2010: I did accomplish my goals for 2010, which was to launch in Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore and also in one international city, which was New York.
2011: Work wise, for 2011 Iâm looking forward to the Islamabad Fashion Week and intend to supply to other stores abroad. I am also working on opening up a flagship store in Karachi, Inshallah.
Mustafa Zahid â musician : Make friends quit bad habits
2010: I made a resolution in 2010 that I will always be honest about my relationships because a lot of my friends felt that I wasnât being honest, and I accomplished it.
2011: I will make my friends quit smoking cigarettes and sheesha, in contrast to what they made me do last year.
Sana Mir â cricketer : Iâll get more active
2010: My resolution for the year 2010 was to focus on what I can do rather than what others are doing.
2011: I would like to continue the last one with an addition; to be more active and organised and not procrastinate.

MUMBAI: He loses his temper at the drop of a hat, can flare up unexpectedly and teach the system a lesson. Yes thatâs a reel life persona of Nana Patekar. But contrary to his reel life image, Nana is quite reluctant in his real life.
He doesnât believe in raising his voice till needed. The kind of caliber he has, is possessed by no one in the Bollywood industry. He has given Indian cinema some memorable and outstanding performances. Today on the occasion of his birthday, let us go through his career in Hindi film industry.
Born on January 1, 1951, Nana has completed his education from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. He made his debut with GAMAN in 1978. He then acted in movies like MOHRE, SALAAM BOMBAY, but it was his film PARINDA where he played the role of villain helped Nana get recognition in Bollywood. The same film got Nana his first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Post to which, Nana had to make space in his home for more trophies. He even won National Film Award for Best Actor for his ground breaking acting in KRANTIVEER.
Nana never stuck to similar kind of roles. Over a span of years, he experimented with every type of role. He mostly played hero in movies but Nana was equally appreciated in negative roles. He played roles like a gambler in KRANTIVEER, a wife beater in AGNI SAKSHI, deaf-mute father in KHAMOSHI and schizophrenic in WAJOOD. He even did a comic role in WELCOME along with Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor.
He ventured into different areas of filmmaking. He turned into a director for his movie PRAHAAR. Nana also sung for songs in films YESHWANT, WAJOOD and AANCH. His song from YESHWANT âEk Maccharâ was a liked by the audience and was a big hit. He also acted in Marathi movies and plays.
In 2011, Nana will be seen in Anees Bazmeeâs ITS MY LIFE starring Harman Baweja and Genelia Dâsouza. The movie is a remake of the superhit Telugu film BOMMARILLU. I am eager to see one more spectacular performance by this star.
