Three matches to be played in football WC today

JOHANNESBURG: At least three matches would be played today in the Fifa World Cup underway in South Africa.

Holland will clash with Denmark in the first face-off, Japan-Cameroon is the second in the lineup and last match would be played between Italy and Paraguay.

Defending champion Italy begins its World Cup schedule Monday against Paraguay. The Italian roster has championship experience running throughout, led by defender Fabio Cannavaro and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Returning coach Marcello Lippi has nine players over 30, led by 36-year-old captain Cannavaro and midfielder Genaro Gattuso.

“I don”t feel old,” the 32-year-old Gattuso said. “If I”m old, then I don”t know what to think about my grandfather”

Lippi has been criticized by some as being too loyal to the players who captured Italy”s fourth World Cup in 2006. And the Italians have struggled in friendlies, most recently losing 2-1 to Mexico.

But Italy was not among the top contenders heading into the last World Cup in Germany, either. Nor does it always start well in tournaments.

“The debut is always particularly important,” defender Gianluca Zambrotta said of the game in Cape Town. “We want to finish first in the group and a good start would be ideal.”

Paraguay is no pushover. It finished one point behind Brazil in South American qualifying and yielded just 16 goals in 18 matches. In Roque Santa Cruz and Lucas Barrios, it has two dangerous forwards.

It has something extra to play for, too.

Paraguay President Fernando Lugo recently sent a letter to the team”s players asking them to dedicate the tournament to former striker Salvador Cabanas, who survived a gunshot wound to the head and is still recovering.

“Remember our beloved, stupendous example of gritty Paraguay spirit — Salvador Cabanas,” Lugo wrote. “He is a magnificent example of how the fighting spirit, a strong will and faith helps us respond in the face of adversity.”

Cameroon has faced turmoil from within its ranks, not the best atmosphere heading into a World Cup. The Indomitable Lions, who open with Japan at Bloemfontein, nearly lost star striker Samuel Eto”o in a spat with former Cameroon standout Roger Milla.

Milla questioned the Inter Milan forward”s performances for the national team. Eto”o, who is Cameroon”s leading international scorer with 42 goals, threatened to skip the tournament.

“He is my captain, a great player, one of the best players in the world and he wants to do well,” said coach Paul Le Guen, adding that Eto”o “is fit, he is ready to fight and be a good captain for us during this World Cup.”

Japan makes its fourth World Cup appearance and never has won a game outside its homeland. Midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura, a free kick specialist, leads Japan, which lost its last four friendlies, scoring just one goal in that stretch. Coach Takeshi Okada consistently tinkered with his lineup to find the best balance.

“We have to win. The first game is very important, like a final,” midfielder Junichi Inamoto said.

The Dutch probably don”t need such an approach as a heavy favorite in Group E ahead of Japan, Cameroon and Denmark, which the Netherlands faces in Johannesburg. Even without injured Arjen Robben (hamstring), the Dutch are potent. They have creative attackers Wesley Sneijder, Mark van Bommel, Rafael van der Vaart, Robin Van Persie and Dirk Kuyt.

And they”re not afraid to boast about it.

“We should reach the semifinals at least,” Van Persie said. “That”s a must for us, especially when you look at the 23 players and the clubs they play for.”

Still, the defense is suspect and longtime keeper Edwin van der Saar is gone, with untested Maarten Stekelenburg stepping in.

The Dutch and Danes won their qualifying groups with a combined one defeat in 18 games, with the Netherlands going unbeaten. Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner (groin) is likely to be missing.

“They are a very good team, a very young team with players who play all around Europe at big teams,” said Denmark winger Jesper Gronkjaer. “They are surely one of the favorites to win the World Cup.

“It will be a hard task for us, even though we will be going in to win the game. If we can get something out of the game we will be happy.”

b55db04d39th 13 oklahoma cityARLINGTON — The Rangers are ready to make a series of moves they believe will get them back to full strength offensively.

The Rangers are planning to activate outfielder Nelson Cruz (strained right hamstring) and infielder Joaquin Arias (strained back) off the disabled list during their three-game series against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

General manager Jon Daniels said Cruz will replace backup first baseman Ryan Garko, who has just three singles in 33 at-bats. Garko will be optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City and then be placed on outright waivers. The Rangers want to give Garko a chance to be claimed by another team and get a Major League job. If not, he will be assigned outright to Oklahoma City. Arias will replace outfielder Craig Gentry, who will be optioned back to Oklahoma City.

Garko has been the Rangers backup first baseman. But that was more important when the Rangers had Chris Davis, a left-handed hitter, at first. Justin Smoak is a switch-hitter. Arias has also been playing first base at Oklahoma City, and the Rangers feel Max Ramirez and Andres Blanco can play there as well.

“Garko’s just not quite the perfect fit as when we first picked him up,” Daniels said. “He needs to get some at-bats and consistent playing time. He’s better than he’s shown.”

Cruz has been sidelined since April 27 and was 3-for-9 in two games at Oklahoma City on a medical rehabilitation assignment.

“I played nine innings two days ago and I played nine innings [Wednesday],” Cruz said. “I ran the bases, I got a couple of hits and a couple of fly balls. It was pretty normal.”

Cruz was hitting .323 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 19 games before he went on the disabled list. He was also among the league leaders with a .758 slugging percentage and a .419 on-base percentage.

Friday night is expected to be the first time that Ian Kinsler and Cruz have been in the lineup together this season. Kinsler started the season on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle and didn’t return until after Cruz was on the DL himself. Now Cruz will bat sixth behind Elvis Andrus, Michael Young, Josh Hamilton, Vladimir Guerrero and Kinsler.

“I’m loving it,” manager Ron Washington said.

The Rangers’ offense could use the boost. They entered Thursday’s game sixth in the American League in runs scored, seventh in on-base percentage and eighth in slugging percentage — though they were also sporting a .303 average for May, the highest in the Majors.

“Our team has done a good job keeping our heads above water and playing well despite not having our ‘A’ lineup,” Young said. “That’s part of the big leagues: guys getting banged up and still playing well. We’ve done a good job of that. But it will be nice to get Nellie back in there, have the lineup we envisioned and get some momentum going.

“We haven’t even touched what we’re capable of offensively. That’s something we constantly talk about. We want to make sure improvement is our biggest focal point.”

“”Boy, that Timberwolf was one s—-y deal.’ They sold that s—y deal,” Levin said today, reading from an internal Goldman Sachs memo.

The email was from the head of a division in late June 2007 to Daniel Sparks, the salesman on the hot-seat in the Senate’s committee hearing on Goldman Sachs.

“How much of that ’s—-y deal’ did you sell to your clients after June 22, 2007?,” Levin (D-Mich.) asked Sparks.

“I don’t know the answer to that, but the price would have reflected levels that they wanted to invest in at the time,” the Goldman Sachs employee testifying said. “I don’t recall selling hundreds of millions of that deal after that.”

The message he drew from the remark of the division chief, he said, was that his performance on the Timberwolf deal wasn’t good.

“I didnt use that term with respect to this deal,” Sparks said.

Cruz has battled the injury off an on for a week, missing parts of two games during a mid-week series in Boston last week and serving as DH in another, then serving only as a pinch-hitter in the opener of Texas’ weekend set with Detroit before returning to the lineup.

52nd+Annual+GRAMMY+Awards+Show+A Nh0KywxRzl lollapalooza 2010 lineupThe Lollapalooza 2010 Lineup was finally announced Tuesday and while you can’t get the discounted early bird tickets anymore, it looks like it’s still a bargain for three days of music priced at $215.

Aside from Lady Gaga, the lineup is right in step with the early ’90s roots of the music festival — right down to bands like Soundgarden and Green Day, who would have been perfectly comfortable headlining Lollapalooza back in 1993. Besides old school favorites like Social Distortion, Devo, and Cypress Hill, the festival has been updated with indie favorites like Arcade Fire, Spoon and Matt & Kim.

This lineup is more in line with the type of eclectic mix that has made both Coachella and Bonnaroo wildly popular in recent years. That means Midwesterners have a chance to go to a major music festival in Chicago instead of traveling to either the East or West Coast.

Here’s the full list of artists scheduled to play Lollapalooza 2010.

Gordon Hayward must sense that he must start scoring for Butler, driving to the basket while ago that only get called for charging when Duke guard Jon Scheyer came before him.

There was a bang-bang play that could have gone both ways.

Hayward got the call on the Bulldogs’ next possession when he drove down the lane and was bopped over the head by 7-foot-1 center Brian Zoubek. It was Zoubek fourth error that put him on the bench with just over 11 minutes left in the second half.

I’m still on the ball park who witnessed the wonder reinforced by Jason Heyward. But I’m about to head home, after which I will chat live from the NCAA championship game. And I wonder: If Jason Heyward can hit a three run Homer in his first major league swing, can Gordon Hayward drop shots, giving the national crown for the Butler Bulldogs?
