The White Stripes Have Split

The White Stripes have officially called it a day. The former couple Jack and Meg White announced the news on Wednesday via the White Stripes official website. They stated, they will “make no further recordings or perform live” together as the White Stripes. Adding that there are a “myriad of reasons” and they want to “preserve what is beautiful and special about the band” they also expressed gratitude to their fans,
“Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
Formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan, their punk blues act rapidly reached international status and success. Jack gave the duo its voice and guitar sounds and Meg played drums, they recorded six studio albums together. Their last recording as the White stripes was the live album “Under the Great White Northern Lights”.
My Name Is Khan to contend at the Oscars?
Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan may have missed out by a whisker to Peepli LIVE on being India’s official entry to the Oscars this year but there is a possibility that the SRK-Kajol starrer may find its way to the Academy awards list of nominations.
The film has made it to the reminder list of movies eligible for this year’s Academy Awards, joining box office heavyweights such as Inception, Iron Man 2 and Black Swan.
The film has managed to do phenomenal business in the overseas market and this fact could have helped getting the film prominence among the international audience. One will have to wait and watch if MNIK does make it to the final nominees list which is scheduled to be announced on Jan 25. If it does, it would certainly call for one big celebration in the KJo-SRK camp.
A Minute With Bette Midler on New Year TV special

NEW YORK: She has received four Grammys, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, and a Tony Award, and even after selling more than 30 million records, singer Bette Midler is still going strong.
For over 40 years, Midler has delighted audiences with her bawdy live performances, and on Dec. 31, Midler will be ringing in the New Year on cable TV channel HBO with her special, “The Showgirl Must Go On,” which is the live stage show she has been performing in recent years at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
The special was taped in front of a packed house at Caesars. Midler, known as “The Divine Miss M,” dons elaborate costumes and sings some of her best-known hits including “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” with her back-up singers, The Harlettes, and a 13-piece band.
Midler asked about the TV special, why being environmentally green is common sense and her love of books.
Q: How did you get in such great shape for the show?
A: “A year before we even started rehearsals, I started doing my warm-ups, getting on the treadmill again and lifting weights. It”s fascinating to get on stage and run for an hour and a half, wringing wet at the end. And I loved every minute of it.”
Q: You”ve had such a long and successful career. What do you think is the key to your success?
A: “I don”t do everything that comes my way and I tend to do things in spurts. I”ll be really busy and then just collapse, take a break for a year or two and then come roaring back. I”m not sure if that”s how you achieve longevity, but I tend to sift through things and make sure they are things I really want to do.”
Q: You did over 200 performances of your Las Vegas show. How do you keep a song fresh that”s done night after night?
A: It”s not so easy, but the crowds are different every night and every crowd becomes a beast of its own — this huge monster that has to be wrangled and corralled. And you have to stay in tune with them. There”s an ebb and flow between the crowd and the entertainer that really keeps you on your toes, and this changes with every performance. I think that”s what keeps a song fresh.
Q: Are you working on any new projects?
A: No, this is one of the down times. Just looking around to see what”s out there. It”s a different world now, with the Internet, iTunes, YouTube, Twitter — all this stuff which is so different from what I do and I really don”t know where I fit in it. I feel if you can entertain a group of people live, you”re really going to be okay, and I”ve always been able to do that.
But I”m curious to see where I fit in in this new world, so I”m exploring my options.
Q: What”s on your iPod?
A: I just love Teddy Pendergrass. I”ve always been a big fan. Also, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, “The Sound of Philadelphia” and Harry Nielson, “A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night,” which is one of the most beautiful records ever made. And I listen to The Stones.
Q: You”ve been a pioneer in the now popular green movement, founding the nonprofit New York Restoration Project (www.nyrp.org). Why are you so passionate about it?
A: I feel our city has the right to be a beautiful, clean and green city. When I came back to New York City from California in 1995, I felt the city wasn”t living up to its potential. So I started the New York Restoration Project with my own funds, surrounded myself with very good people and staff and we”ve been going strong for 15 years. We”ve been very lucky.
We”ve had a tremendous outpouring of support from New Yorkers of all stripes, all colors and all ages.
Of all the things I”ve done, I have to say I”m proudest of the fact that we”ve raised awareness of people that live in the city. Mostly what I am doing is common sense. All green thought is based on common sense. If you want to survive then you have to make sure that the planet in which you live is healthy.
Q: If you weren”t an actor, singer you”d be
A: I think would probably own a bookstore. I really love books. They”ve been my friends my whole life. To be surrounded by wonderful books is a real treat every day.
IE9 leads on Malware security: Report

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 beta Web browser beat the competition on malware protection, an NSS Labs report finds.
It’s one step forward and one back for security on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser. A malware security report by NSS Labs found Windows Internet Explorer 9 beta caught an exceptional 99 percent of the live threats, leading the non-IE pack by 80 percent. Mozilla Firefox 3.6 caught 19 percent of the live threats, down 10 percent from the NSS Labs test conducted in the first quarter of 2010. IE9′s protection includes SmartScreen URL filtering, which is included in IE8 as well as SmartScreen application reputation, which is new to IE9.
The report noted Apples Safari 5 browser caught 11 percent of the live threats, with overall protection declining 18 percent from Q1 2010. Google Chrome 6 caught just three percent of the live threats, down 14 percent from the Q1 2010 test and Opera 10 brought up the rearthe browser caught zero percent of the live threats. The report concluded the browser provides virtually no protection against socially engineered malware. From an initial list of 8,000 new suspicious sites, 1,209 potentially malicious URLs were prescreened for inclusion in the test and were available at the time of entry into the test. These were successfully accessed by the browsers in at least one run. On average, 124 new URLs were added to the test set per day. NSS Labs then assessed the browsers ability to block malicious URLs as quickly as they found them on the Internet, and continued testing them every six hours to determine how long it took a vendor to add protection.
Trends show Safari and Firefox converging at a protection rate just under 20 percent, indicating that while they share the Google Safe Browser feed, there is a difference in each browsers implementation. The report noted the mean time to block a site (if it is blocked at all) was16.4 hours, and noted Chrome (with a mean time of 17.8 hours) and Safari (nearly 37.5 hours) were above average at adding new blocks. With the exception of Opera, which failed to block a single malware download, all browsers blocked at least one malware download, according to NSS Labs data. It became obvious from this test and comparisons to the earlier test that Microsoft continues to improve their IE malware protection in Internet Explorer 8 (through its SmartScreen Filter technology) and in Internet Explorer 9 (with the addition of SmartScreen application reputation technology). With a unique URL blocking score of 94 percent and over-time protection rating of 99 percent, Internet Explorer 9 was by far the best at protecting against socially-engineered malware, the report concluded. The 89 percent zero-hour block rate suggests a far superior malware identification, collection, and classification method, the report noted. The test, conducted in September 2010, was the companys fourth test of Web browser protection against socially engineered malwarewhich the company said is the most common and impactful security threat facing Internet users today. This report followed the same Live Testing methodology as the tests conducted in Q1 2009, Q3 2009, and Q1 2010. The report contains empirically-validated evidence gathered during 11 days of 24 x 7 testing, performed every six hours, over 39 discrete test runs, each one adding fresh new malware URLs. Each product was updated to the most current version available at the time testing began, and allowed access to the live Internet.
Controversy to Left Pakistan Cricket more Alone in the World
Controversy to left Pakistan cricket more alone in the world is under preparation now days. According to the new suggested FTP the Indian team will play just two short series on a neutral venue in next eight years. On the other hand ICC is not ready to fulfill his promise to give icon status to the Pakistan- India series.
Australia is also not agree to play a series in Pakistan. Now a days PCB is talking to Zimbabwe cricket board in order to use their home grounds again for international cricket. Zimbabwe was the only country that gives the offer to play with Pakistan on the Pakistan land. The purpose of the Pakistan-Zimbabwe series was to help the flood victims. First the dates of this series given were up to 19 December but due to Muharram-ul-Harram the security clearance was not given to the week African side. Now the series between both countries will be played next year.
Different countries on different times said no in regard to play a series with green shirts on their home ground especially after the attack on the Sri Lankan team. According to the former players and the experts, if the circumstances of Pakistan cricket will continue like this then PCB have to face a heavy economic lose. The BCCI is not ready to give the dates of the series between Pakistan and India to be played on a neutral venue and said that the blue shirts will play against Pakistan when they will not busy and when Indian government will give them the permission to play against green shirts.
Just like India and other big teams Bangladesh have also adopted the same attitude with Pakistan. Bangladesh did not support Pakistan on the World Cup Issue. In 2009 Pakistani team has to go to Bangladesh to play 2 tests and 5 ODIs but the BCB make a lame excuse of security clearance and then the series can’t be held. Pakistan always supported Bangladesh and other two South Asian sides but at this time none of the Asian side is ready to help Pakistan cricket in this critical situation.
Consequences of attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team, suicide attacks and some other factors are very deep and negative for Pakistan cricket but Pakistani people are waiting that when an international team will come in Pakistan and when they people of Pakistan can enjoy the live cricket in their own country.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Singer R. Kelly said he hopes his new World Cup anthem can inspire people in much the same way as his signature song “I Believe I Can Fly.”
Kelly’s new “Sign of a Victory” has been declared the official anthem for the World Cup. The songwriter said in an interview on Wednesday that it carried a message of hope and triumph.
“It’s definitely no doubt a humanity song, and I’m hoping that everybody feels the same way when they hear it,” he said. “(I’m) hoping they can be as touched by it as I was when I heard it in my head.”
Working with the Soweto Spiritual Singers on the song was an “unbelievable” experience, he said.
It’s R. Kelly’s second trip to Africa. He toured the continent last year, overcoming his fear of flying.
“I always said, `I can’t get on the plane, I can’t get on the plane,’” he explained. “But when I finally did get up the nerve to get on the plane and come on over to Africa, the welcome was so unbelievably warm. It was just so touching that I couldn’t believe it.”That these evoked the spirit of “The Lion King” (a giant-sized dung beetle puppet in particular) was no surprise: the co-producer of the opening ceremony was Lebo M, known for his work as part of the creative team of both “The Lion King” movie and Broadway production.
In selecting the music performers for the ceremony, the producers were sensitive to the notion that whilst the 2010 FIFA World Cup is being staged in South Africa for the next month, it’s being billed as the first-ever African World Cup.

Today, we’re announcing the completion of a new web indexing system called Caffeine. Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than our last index, and it’s the largest collection of web content we’ve offered. Whether it’s a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before.
Some background for those of you who don’t build search engines for a living like us: when you search Google, you’re not searching the live web. Instead you’re searching Google’s index of the web which, like the list in the back of a book, helps you pinpoint exactly the information you need. (Here’s a good explanation of how it all works.)
So why did we build a new search indexing system? Content on the web is blossoming. It’s growing not just in size and numbers but with the advent of video, images, news and real-time updates, the average webpage is richer and more complex. In addition, people’s expectations for search are higher than they used to be. Searchers want to find the latest relevant content and publishers expect to be found the instant they publish.
To keep up with the evolution of the web and to meet rising user expectations, we’ve built Caffeine. The image below illustrates how our old indexing system worked compared to Caffeine:How Fast is Fast?
Prior to Caffeine, Google’s search index worked in batch processes. It’d sop up a site’s data and add it to the index. “While this system was continuous, all the documents in the batch had to wait until the whole batch was processed to be pushed live. Now, when Google crawls a page, it processes that page through the entire indexing pipeline and pushes it live nearly instantly,” Search Engine Land explained.
In terms of actual zoom, PCWorld conducted a side-by-side comparison test when Caffeine was still in development and found that results took 0.15 seconds on the regular Google search and 0.09 seconds on Caffeine. Since Caffeine is now live across all data centers, regions, and languages, it’s hard to gauge the increase in speed.
get him to the greek

A Universal release presented in association with Relativity Media and Spyglass Entertainment of an Apatow production. Produced by Judd Apatow, Nicholas Stoller, David Bushell, Rodney Rothman. Executive producer, Richard Vane. Co-producer, Jason Segel.
Aaron Green – Jonah Hill
Aldous Snow – Russell Brand
Daphne Binks – Elisabeth Moss
Jackie Q – Rose Byrne
Jonathan Snow – Colm Meaney
Sergio Roma – Sean Combs
“Greek” is a spinoff of sorts, following the further exploits of hedonistic British rock star Aldous Snow, last seen getting straight and sober in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” But Snow has fallen on hard times here. A well-intentioned but enormously offensive single, “African Child,” — imagine Spinal Tap trying to write “We Are the World” — has put his career into a nose-dive, sent his girlfriend and child packing, and caused him to relapse into substance abuse.

In an effort to resurrect his public image, the record company sends Aaron Green (Jonah Hill), an intern, to escort him from London to a comeback gig at L.A.’s Greek Theater. Green has his own problems, too. He’s trying to salvage a foundering romance with his live-in girlfriend (“Mad Men’s” Elisabeth Moss), who’s ready to settle down. But at Snow’s insistence, this British assignment — which should involve little more than an airplane meal and an in-flight movie — devolves into a three-day bender. Rather than acting like a grown-up, Green spends most of the film following Snow from party to party, guzzling absinthe and hiding illicit substances in uncomfortable places.
Jonah Hill now looks like the unhealthiest actor on the planet, but he wears his rotund shape lightly, rather than letting it wear him. In Get Him to the Greek, Aaron has way too much of a good time, but Hill, with his low-key sincerity, keeps you rooting for him; he’s a schlemiel who’s always a bit reassuringly cooler than you expect. Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss, as his live-in girlfriend, makes her workaday prickliness convincing, and Sean Combs, as Aaron’s boss, gets to go entertainingly apoplectic.

Get Him to the Greek is a clever rock-world satire, with some lively take-offs on the TMZ-gossip magazine circus, but it’s also too long, and by the time of the inevitable Las Vegas sequence, it starts to grow repetitive. The movie isn’t, in the end, in the top drawer of Judd Apatow productions, as Forgetting Sarah Marshall was. It’s closer to a more flaked-out (and interesting) Pineapple Express. Aldous Snow was actually more hilarious when he had less time on screen. As indelible as Russell Brand is in the role, I’m not sure that the character really benefited from being given daddy issues and a guilt complex. The movie left me wondering: Where can Brand go from here? Can he keep milking the same royalty-of-scuzz routine he does on awards shows?
If Get Him to the Greek elevates his career, as I suspect it will, maybe we’ll get to see where the rock star leaves off and the movie star begins.”Get Him to the Greek” is also notable as the latest Universal release to feature a conspicuous and extended tie-in with sister network NBC’s “Today” (co-host Meredith Vieira plays herself), after Matt Lauer fulfilled a similar role in “Land of the Lost.” In this case, one suspects the synergistic payoff will be considerably happier for the studio.
