Oil futures dropped below $85 a barrel on Tuesday, as the dollar’s strength and expectations of build-ups in U.S. petroleum supplies weighed on prices.
Crude for June delivery fell $1.56, or 1.8%, to $84.63 a barrel in electronic trading on Globex. The contract ended marginally higher on Monday.
“The weakness we are seeing in crude this morning is brought on by a couple of factors — first the
stronger dollar along with the weaker S&P [stock futures],” said Tariq Zahir, managing member at Tyche Capital Advisors LLC.
S&P 500 futures dropped 8.50 points to 1,190, as traders awaited data on pending home sales and factory orders.
In the currency markets, the greenback gained against its major rivals, weighing on dollar-denominated oil prices. The euro (CUR_EURUSD 1.3057, -0.0130, -0.9858%) dropped 0.9% to $1.3085.
The dollar index (DXY 82.94, +0.67, +0.81%) , which tracks the performance of the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, rose 0.8% to 82.909.
“If we had any slowdowns in crude shipments, we are well-supplied in the market,” Zahir said in emailed comments. “Furthermore, the contango in the forward continues to get wider which further indicated the oil market is well-supplied.”
The American Petroleum Institute will release its report on inventories at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Analysts polled by Platts expect an increase of 1.54 million barrels in crude stocks for the week ended April 30. They also project a rise of 200,000 barrels in gasoline stocks and a build-up of 1.89 million barrels in distillate supplies.
Refinery utilization is projected to drop 0.29 percentage point to 88.66%.
The Energy Information Administration will report its more closely watched data on supplies on Wednesday morning.
“Now brimming stocks in Cushing appear again to weigh fully on WTI,” said analysts at Vienna-based JBC Energy in a note. Cushing, Okla., is the delivery point for West Texas Intermediate crude traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Big East Tournament 2010 Bracket
Big East Tournament 2010 Bracket, West Virginia and Pitt are tied for third at 12-5. They split their head-to-head meetings, but the Panthers earn
the three seed by virtue of their victory over regular season champ Syracuse.
–Louisville can finish no better than sixth and no worse than seventh (night game!). The only way U of L can be the seventh seed is if they lose to Syracuse, Georgetown beats Cincinnati and Notre Dame loses to Marquette. If the Irish and Hoyas both win and Louisville loses, all three are 1-1 in the three-team mini-conference, so the Cards’ victory over Syracuse would earn them the six seed.

Karen Cunagin Sypher Video
Karen Sypher Tapes/Karen Sypher Tapes-Here is the videotaped interview of Karen Cunagin SypherKaren Sypher’s tape was released by police to press prompting Rick Pitino to fume to press thereafter.
Rick Pitino would expect that the police would release the Karen Sypher Tapes (video footage of the complaint of Karen Sypher who is accusing Rick Pitino of rape) which could add more damage to his name? If you have been following the Rick Pitino extortion case, you know that Pitino and Sypher have been trying to destroy each other, making a feast for the media in the process.
Pitino called an immediate press conference.
“If you all showed up thinking I am resigning you are going to be disappointed. On the day Ted Kennedy died we broke into news here in Louisville with Karen Sypher tapes….Believe me I will suffer for that mistake. My wife and children should not suffer for these lies, and believe me these are lies.”
University of Louisville president James Ramsey issued the following statement thereafter:
“Several months ago, Coach Pitino informed me about the alleged extortion attempt. I’ve now been informed that there may be other details which, if true, I find surprising”.
Reports claim Pitino’s contract with Louisville provides “dishonesty” and “moral depravity” as basis for firing.
