Lahore: 109 LDC vacancies, 20,000 applicants
For the Lower Division Clerk (LDC) position in the Lahore High Court (LHC), the minimum educational requirement is of Matric but most off the applications were from youths with higher qualifications.
Sunday was the last day to submit the applications and so far more than 20,000 applications have been received. The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court said that the vacancies would be appointed on merit in a transparent manner.

CAIRO: Victory is assured for Egypt’s ruling party in Sunday’s parliamentary election, which is expected to shunt the opposition Muslim Brotherhood further to the margins of mainstream politics.
The Brotherhood is targeting 30 percent of the lower house where it won a fifth of seats in 2005 — its best result — but analysts say the government wants to squeeze its most vocal critic out of parliament before a presidential vote in 2011.
The election in which 508 seats are at stake, including for the first time 64 reserved for women, may offer a foretaste of how the government conducts the presidential poll.
President Hosni Mubarak, 82, has not said whether he will seek to extend his 29-year tenure. After he had gall-bladder surgery in March, speculation grew that he might step down.

LAHORE: The battle between Lawyers and police continued on third day as rampant lawyers and police went face to face once again on Saturday, converting the Lower Mall area into a battle ground.
Defying Section 144, hundreds of charged lawyers took out a rally at Aiwan-e-Adl in Lahore.
Despite the heavy deployment of security personnel outside Aiwan-e-Adl, lawyers managed to beat up several policemen in a tit-for-tat spat, leaving many of them injured.
Lawyers pelted stones at police mobiles and chanted slogans.
Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse the protesting lawyers. As a result, several lawyers sustained injures, while few of them became unconscious.
The participants of the rally staged a token sit-in on Lower Mall.

Vote counting continues in Afghan polls
Voting has been ended and counting is underway in parliamentary elections in Afghanistan. More than 2,500 candidates are standing for 249 seats in the lower house of parliament, the Wolesi Jirga, after past elections were marred by allegations of widespread corruption. The US and other European nations have voiced concern about security in many parts of Afghanistan amid a spate of abductions.
Taliban militants kidnapped an Afghan parliamentary candidate and were blamed for snatching another 18 election workers, as President Hamid Karzai warned of irregularities in the elections. The insurgents were also blamed for the kidnapping of 18 electoral officials and campaign workers in northwestern Baghdis province.

The Taliban have kidnapped eight Afghan election officials and 10 campaign workers ahead of weekend polls on Friday.
They were kidnapped last night by the Taliban, the head of the Independent Election Commission in northwestern Bagdhis province, Abdul Rahman, told a foreign news agency.

French parliament adopts veil ban
The French Senate has overwhelmingly backed a bill banning the wearing of the full Islamic veil in public.
The Senate voted 246 to 1 in favor of the bill, which has already passed in the lower chamber, the National Assembly. It will need President Nicolas Sarkozy’s signature. The measure will impact upon at least 2,000 women.
