Manager Pakistan Cricket Team Intikhab Aalam on Wednesdat said that the team planned to go to Malaysia without seeking Pakistan Cricket Boards permission.

Talking to mediamen at Qadafi Stadium Lahore, Intikhab said that the cricketers took the drawing of Test series against with sportsman spirit and their morale is high. He said that the team would leave on Dec 18 to play the series against New Zealand.

He said the squad would stay the same for World Cup 2011, however, added that only good players would be given the chance.

GUANGZHOU, China: Pakistan has beaten Malaysia 2-0 to regain the Asian Games field hockey gold medal after 20 years and secure a spot at the 2012 London Olympics.

Both Pakistan and Malaysia came through thrilling semifinals on Tuesday to set up the title clash.

India clinched the bronze, defeating South Korea 1-0 via Tushar Khandker’s field goal in the 39th minute.

KARACHI: Pakistan hockey secured the gold medal after defeating Malaysia in the final of Asian Games Thursday.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Sports Minister Aijaz Jakhrani, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and others have appreciated the team victory.

Pakistan has won the final event after 20 years.

The government has announced Rs 5 million for the winning team while Aijaz Jakhrani has said that all the players would be given permanent jobs. Trend Pk

GUANGZHOU: Pakistan has won the gold medal in Asian Games squash after beating Malaysia by 2-0. The team has won the gold medal after 12 years. Former world champion Jansher Khan termed this achievement as a welcome one.

Pakistan’s Farhan Mehboob beat the Malaysian opponent by 3-0 in the first match of the finals of squash, while in the second match, Aamir Atlas Khan of Pakistan remained successful.

Former world squash champion Jansher Khan has said that winning the gold medal will boost the confidence of Pakistani squash players. While talking to Trend Pk, he added, “The players must concentrate on their fitness for further achievements.” Trend Pk

Asian stock markets climbed Friday as investors took heart from the Federal Reserve’s plan to buy $600 billion in government bonds in an effort to inject life into the faltering US economy.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index jumped 204.94 points, or 2.2 percent, to 9,364.92 despite pressure on exporters as the dollar fell below the 81 yen level.

South Korea’s Kospi added 0.3 percent to 1,942.08 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.4 percent at 4,815.00. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index climbed 0.9 percent to 24,363.54. China’s Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.6 percent to 3,047.78.

Elsewhere, markets in Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan advanced while New Zealand’s index fell.

Malaysian by-elections to test mood ahead of polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Polling opened on Thursday in two Malaysian by-elections seen as a gauge of voter sentiment ahead of national elections that could be held as early as next year.

Strong wins by the ruling National Front coalition would signal a turnaround for the government after its record losses in the 2008 general election, and allow Prime Minister Najib Razak to hold early national polls which aren’t due until 2013.

Najib also needs to score a convincing win in both races to secure a mandate to pursue economic reforms which would put Malaysia back on the map of foreign investors.

“If the National Front wins strongly in both seats then the possibility for snap elections next year is there as it would signal that voters are indeed beginning coming back to them,” said political analyst Shaharuddin Badaruddin.

Asian stocks remain mixed

Asian stock markets are exhibiting a mixed trend on Tuesday with investors treading cautiously ahead of the announcement of key quarterly results. The dollar was largely unchanged at 80.71 yen, close to a 15-year low of around 80.40 yen and not far from a record low of 79.75 yen last plumbed in April 1995.
The Japanese stock market is trading weak with a stronger yen and caution ahead of earnings reports contributing to the decline to an extent. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index, which declined to around 9,360 after edging up marginally in early trades, was down 17.76 points or 0.19% at 9,383.40 at the end of the morning session. Among other markets in the Asia-Pacific region, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore are trading weak, while Shanghai, Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan are up marginally. Markets across the region ended mostly higher on Monday.

Vietnam International Film Festival opens in Hanoi

HANOI: The Vietnam International Film Festival (VIFF) kicked off on Sunday (17 OCT.) in Hanoi.

Vietnamese and International directors and movie stars were present in the opening ceremony – including Hollywood Director Phillip Noyce.

12 documentaries and 10 featured films from China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philipines, Hong Kong (China), Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam will compete at the festival.

The categories include: Best Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, a prize of the Network of the Promotion of Asian Cinema (Netpac), and the Media Award.

Other films from 25 countries throughout the world will also be presented.

During the five-day event, seminars on Vietnam’s film industry and a photo exhibition of international film festivals will be conducted.
