A leading player revealed he had received a spot-fixing proposition.

Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said he had been approached by an unnamed player regarding potential spot-fixing when he turns out as skipper of the Dhaka Gladiators in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

“I have told my team management about the approach and I m sure they will do the right thing,” Mortaza told the Cricinfo website. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the report.

Dhaka newspapers reported that Mortaza said he would step down from the team captaincy if he suspected any irregularities once the tournament — styled along the lines of the successful Indian Premier League (IPL) — got going.

Mortaza was asked to provide information on whether he would play certain matches and even whether he would be wearing his sunglasses or a cap when he takes the field.

In exchange, he was told, he would be paid 15-20 percent of the earnings from the spot-betting.

BCB officials said Mortaza has been asked to reveal the name of the player who made the approach.

“This is a very serious offence,” BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP. “We have zero tolerance towards these things and will do whatever is needed to nail it down quickly.

“Mortaza has to disclose the name of the player. It needs to be addressed very seriously.”

Mortaza will be speaking to officials of the International Cricket Council s Anti-Corruption Security Unit before the matches get under way on Friday, Yunus said.

Thursday is the opening ceremony for an event where West Indians Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard are the leading players. The six-team league is to be played in Dhaka and Chittagong, with the final on February 29.

Pakistan s Shahid Afridi, the most expensive foreign player at last month s auction after being sold to the Dhaka Gladiators franchise for $700,000, is not taking part due to international commitments.

Defeated England ‘quarrels with Ajmal’s action’

In keeping with the tradition of faulting foreign players after English defeat, the British media twisted a quote from the Pakistani spinners interview in which he referred to his earlier clearance by the ICC.

Saeed Ajmal, rhe 34-year-old off-spinner who took 24 wickets in the 3-0 Test series whitewash of England, was quoted by the British and other western media as that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has allowed him extra leniency, up to 23.5 degrees to bend his arm.

“I don t know about my bowling action, but somebody was telling me your action is bad. ICC has allowed me 23.5 because my arm is not good because of an accident, that is why a problem,” BBC television showed Ajmal as saying on Monday after being declared man-of-the-series.

“Otherwise no problem, straightaway cleared by ICC.”

Pakistan won the third and final Test here by 71 runs.

His bowling action, reported by match officials during a one-day series against Australia in 2009 before it was cleared after remedial work by experts, once again came under suspicions following his career-best 7-55 in the first Test, also played in Dubai.

Former England paceman Bob Willis raised suspicions over his  doosra  (second one) — a ball which turns the other way than a normal off-break — while England coach Andy Flower said he has his own opinion and left the matter to the ICC.

But after Ajmal s claim on relaxation, Flower on Tuesday showed surprise.

“If that s the degree, then there s a problem, said Flower when asked about Ajmal s claim of special dispensation. “That s ridiculous.”

“That is an ICC issue, though. They are there to police the game, and make sure that it is played within the rules, so they ve got to scrutinise his action.

“We ve all got our own views, but our job is to combat whoever is put against us, and part of it is also to play the game in the right spirit.”

Pakistan cricket team management said Ajmal was cleared by the ICC within the permissible limits and they will issue a further clarification shortly.

An ICC spokesman said that the game s governing body was looking into Ajmal s comments and that no player has been given permission to allow bending arms beyond 15 degrees.

A Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman meanwhile said that Ajmal is not a native English speaker, and his comments could have taken in the wrong context.

Pakistan basks in light of cricket success

ABU DHABI: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq on Sunday said he hoped his team’s series win over test cricket’s number one side England will earn them respect from the cricketing world after a turbulent period which tarnished their image.

Dogged by off-the-field problems like failed dope tests and lack of discipline, Pakistan cricket hit the lowest ebb on their 2010 tour of England when three of their top players were caught in a spot-fixing scandal.

The then Test captain Salman Butt and pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were banned for conniving over the bowlers deliberately bowling no-balls during the Lord’s Test against England, and getting paid for that by agent Mazhar Majeed.

Last November all three and Majeed were sentenced to prison terms by an English court.

But since the scandal, Pakistan have fared well both on and off the field under an astute captain Misbah.

Pakistan beat England by 72 runs in the second Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, their fourth series win on the trot and eighth win in 14 Tests under Misbah, who took over two months after the scandal.

And Pakistan’s resurgence, Misbah feels should earn them respect.

“I think the whole world should acknowledge and accept that Pakistan cricket is coming up, the way our players are performing and they should accept it. Such (negative) things can happen anywhere and we must forget them,” said Misbah.

Misbah, 37, stressed his team will build further on the success against England.

“We have put everything behind us,” said Misbah, who has led from the front hitting 12 fifties as captain.

“I think whichever team is doing well it should be accepted, our team deserves that and with the self confidence we have, we can do better.”

Coach Mohsin Khan, who rather unluckily will be replaced by former Australian batsman Dav Whamore after the series, said these are good days to relish after the bad times.

“I definitely agree with Misbah, we deserve more respect for the performances we have put together,” said Khan, a former opener.

“Pakistan cricket has suffered badly in the last two years but the management and the team has done well to transform it.”

Khan said the impressive win over England will only improve Pakistan’s image.

“A win over the world’s top team is the best thing Pakistan could have achieved,” said Khan, who was appointed interim coach after Waqar Younis quit the post in September last year.

Former captain Ramiz Raja said Pakistan have earned respect.

“I think they have earned respect,” said Raja, now a widely travelled cricket commentator. “They deserve a lot of praise for the manner in which they have beaten the world’s best side, its no mean achievement.”

Raja said the whole nation — embroiled in terrorism, corruption and bad governance — can take a lead from the cricket team.

“I think the whole nation can take the lead from the sequence of the team’s wins. The team has shown more wisdom, sincerity and hard work which people in Pakistan should match in all walks of lives,” said Raja.

“No praise is enough for this team which has lifted its image and the way they have beaten the world’s best team like toddlers is a great achievement,” said Raja. AGENCIES

63bdsrk1 SRK gets fresh notice from Maharashtra Costal Zone Management Authority

Shah Rukh Khan, who is busy with the release of his film Ra.One, may find himself in troubled waters, literally so, with a fresh notice being sent to him by the Maharashtra Costal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) for flouting coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) norms with his latest construction behind his bungalow Mannat.

This comes after the actor was sent a notice a while ago for the apparent illegal construction of a six storied building within the grounds of his bungalow Mannat.

The said notice has been served, asking Khan to respond to the allegations of a six-storey structure on the plot without the permission of the MCZMA. The coastal body’s approval is needed as the Bandstand structure falls in the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ).

The complaint filed by Amit Maru further alleged that MCZMA’s permission was not obtained before the demolition of two heritage structures which existed on the plot. Also, the plot on which Mannat stands was earlier reserved for a public art gallery. The MCZMA’s permission was not obtained before the BMC approved a proposal to modify the reservation to residential purpose.
