MANCHESTER: All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) chief Pervez Musharraf has alleged that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif wanted to sell the Kashmir issue.

Addressing the APML rally participants in Manchester today, Musharraf said that he was close to framing an agreement for the solution of Kashmir.

He said that Manmohan Singh had agreed on a four-point plan to resolve the issue. Musharraf added that he was not ashamed of the remarks he made against Nawaz, in which he sarcastically called him a “clear-headed” man.

Musharraf challenged Nawaz to present the word ‘Kashmir’ in the talks held between Nawaz and former Indian premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the time when Nawaz was the country’s PM. He added that he was the one who kept the Kashmir issue alive.

Meanwhile, hundreds of PML-N activists protested

Gunman kills 8, himself in US workplace shooting

NEW YORK: A disgruntled employee went on a shooting rampage Tuesday at a beer distribution firm in Connecticut, killing eight co-workers before turning the gun on himself, police and officials said.

Officers were called to the scene at Hartford Distributors in Manchester, Connecticut shortly after 7:30 am (1130 GMT) at the time of a shift change when up to 40 people were inside.

“There were nine individuals, including the suspect, who were killed during the shooting,” said a police statement. “We are presently in the process of trying to identify the victims and make notifications to family members.”

The shooter, who local media reports said had been called in by managers for a disciplinary hearing, was found dead some 40 minutes later after shooting a total of 10 people then himself.

Two wounded were transported to a local hospital and “expected to survive,” the police statement said.

The main hospital in the nearby state capital Hartford said it had received three victims of the shooting, one dead, one critical and the third in a stable condition.

The shooter was named by the local Hartford Courant newspaper as Omar Thornton, a 34-year-old driver for the firm.

Thornton was described by a Teamsters union official quoted by the paper as a recent hire with a “disciplinary problem.

“The union was bringing him in to meet with the company to remedy the problem,” said Hollis. “He started shooting.”

Other unconfirmed reports from family members suggested Thornton, who is black, had complained about being racially harassed at work and that his superiors had done nothing about it.

The Hartford Courtand quotes sources as saying Thornton had used a .223 caliber semiautomatic rifle for his shooting spree and that two people had been shot outside the building and five inside, where he was later found.

Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell issued a poignant statement of condolence to the victims.

“Our prayers go out to the employees and families of the victims. In the wake of this tragedy we are all left asking the same questions. How could someone do this? Why did they do this?

“It was a senseless act of violence that has left us all shaken and reminds us just how precious and fragile life truly is.”

Many US states have loose gun ownership laws, but the incident left residents of the small town of Manchester just outside the state capital of Hartford in shock.

The wounded victims in a stable condition was said to be Steven Hollander, whose family owns Hartford distributors, the biggest Budweiser distributor in Connecticut with some 400 employees.

“Everyone is devastated by this tragic and senseless act,” Jim Bataglio, a spokesman for the Hollander family, was quoted as saying in the Hartford Courant.

Tevez double puts Argentina into last eight

JOHANNESBURG: Argentina will meet Germany in the World Cup”s quarter-finals after striker Carlos Tevez struck twice – once controversially – to seal a 3-1 win over Mexico in Sunday”s round of 16 match.

Goals by Manchester City”s Tevez and Real Madrid”s Gonzalo Higuain, his fourth here to become the tournament”s top-scorer, means Diego Maradona”s Argentina will now meet the Germans in Cape Town on Saturday in the last eight.

“It”s important to have reached the quarters. As for my goals? Well, I just want to be effective,” said Tevez self-effacingly.

“Now we have to relax a little ahead of going up against the Germans in the quarter-finals, four years after losing to them” also in the last eight, when the Germans won on penalties.

Mexico forward Javier Hernandez gave his side brief hope when he turned his marker in the 71st minute and smashed his shot past Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, although it was too little, too late.

Argentina were not to be denied, but Tevez”s first-half strike was awarded in controversial circumstances as replays showed he was off-side when world footballer of the year Lionel Messi gave him the final pass.

The Manchester City star”s shot was saved by Mexican goalkeeper Oscar Perez, but Messi followed up and chipped Perez for Tevez to head home.

The Mexican defence complained bitterly that Tevez was offside, but Italian referee Roberto Rosetti allowed the 26th-minute goal to stand despite the furore caused by a replay of the incident on the stadium”s giant TV screens.

Mexico captain Rafael Marquez picked up a yellow card almost from the restart for fouling Messi.

Things went from bad to worse for the Mexicans on 33 minutes when defender Ricardo Osorio”s pass went straight to Higuain, who slotted past Perez to make it 2-0 at the break.

Rosetti had to step in to break up a pitch-side melee between the two sides as they walked off for half-time with tempers boiling over in the wake of the first goal.

Tevez settled the matter with a breath-taking strike on 52 minutes which he rifled into the net”s top right-hand corner from just outside the penalty area, giving Perez no chance.

The Manchester City star came off in the 69th minute to make way for Juan Veron just as Argentina”s Martin Demichelis cleared off the line before Hernandez scored Mexico”s consolation.

This was the fifth straight finals where Mexico have exited the competition at the round of 16 phase and the last time they reached the quarter-finals was when the hosted the event in 1986.

Argentina remain on course for their third World Cup title after 1978 and 1986.

The England captain will go back to see the Manchester United medical staff about his recovery schedule after the game against the United States.

He could come back as part of England’s support staff, though.

England’s first game takes place on Saturday, but, depending on the recovery schedule the Manchester United doctors have for him, the captain could return to South Africa as part of the England team staff, in order to support his colleagues, at least morally, if he can’t do it from the pitch.ce00d3ef1568x388 rio ferdinand

After Carlos Tevez had threatened to take the semi-final into extra-time when he superbly turned home Craig Bellamy’s cross 14 minutes from time, up popped Rooney, who nodded home Ryan Giggs’ cross to secure a Carling Cup final meeting with Aston Villa on February 28.

Red Devils thought they were already in Wembley Controlling possession against a City side which sat too deep, they had carved out a decisive lead thanks to two precise finishes from Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick either side of the interval.

Only Tevez’s refusal to bow down to the feet of his old club kept the Blues going, but it was not enough. And though Rooney inexplicably failed to grab a third before Tevez struck, he is too much a part of United’s fabric to merely accept defeat.
